I have took notice of several PH-related articles here use -ise and other typically UK/Commonwealth spellings - apparently introduced by editors who are educated in British, Singaporean or Australian international schools - which run counter to WP:ENGVAR. Take for example Death and funeral of Corazon Aquino but I have seen enough PH-related articles that use such to consider a cleanup effort. TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 20:06, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

For the record, most of the articles in question are created before {{Philippine English}} and {{use Philippine English}} came into wider use. For the Cory funeral article, I already cleaned up the spellings (not limited to -ise/-isation spellings but also honour for honor and neighbour for neighbor) and replaced "coach" with "bus". -TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 21:31, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

I've seen such articles and it seems that for some, the very first versions indeed use BrE, and was carried on to the present day. As per WP:ENGVAR we shouldn't have to change it to PhE unilaterally if it was maintained all these years on another variant. Howard the Duck (talk) 22:09, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

@Howard the Duck: It appears you missed the guideline on English variety on articles with strong national ties. For articles strongly tied to PH (like the Cory funeral), it is expected it should be written in PH English, so there is the incentive to clean up any article not written in the applicable national variant of English (well the article does have a PhE tag already since 2022 given the national ties guideline, but the spellings remained in UK English). I find myself cringing seeing UK spelling on an article about anyone or anything Filipino (our standard English variety is based on American English in both spelling and vocabulary, plus we are never part of the Commonwealth of Nations), and a Filipino reader might have no idea what a UK/Commonwealth coach (the road vehicle) means unless they have prior exposure through media, education or life overseas. I do have some strong feelings regarding fellow Filipino editors who use UK/Commonwealth spellings when editing PH-related articles. Most likely they do that because they received their English education in international school where the medium of instruction is based on UK English or national standard varieties derived from it such as Singaporean English or Australian English (but not Canadian English). Also likely, they may be born and raised overseas and speak an English variety based on the UK standard (save the like of Canadian), of mixed heritage, or even only pretentious. But when dealing with PH-related articles, I am expecting the editors should use standard PH English spelling and usage, and for articles already written in PH English, respect the variety used. I would like to have a cleanup list created of articles with strong Philippine ties but are written using UK norms , but as an editor mostly off WP these days, can leave it to someone. Isn't there a article cleanup task force for that task? TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 00:05, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

It seems that MOS:TIES overrides MOS:RETAIN. Just be on the look out for said editors who are still actively maintaining such articles. Howard the Duck (talk) 06:38, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

• I've just noticed a few geographical articles which use the {{Convert}} template using "metre" and "kilometre". For example, Iloilo and Iloilo City as opposed to Manila using "meter" and "kilometer". Fork99 (talk) 03:19, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

  In those cases that's almost always going to be because the Convert template uses those spellings as default. You have to manually add |sp=us if you want the spelling to be different. CMD (talk) 03:45, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
