カール・テルツァーギ

1883年、プラハで軍人を父として生まれる^[1]。グラーツ工科大学の機械工学科に籍を置いたものの、地質学に傾倒した^[1]。1904年に同大学を卒業した^[1]後は水力発電所のダムのエンジニアとして活躍。第一次世界大戦ではオーストリア軍に従軍した^[1]。戦後の1916年からはイスタンブール工科大学の講師として土質工学の研究に従事する^[1]。そして1925年、「土質力学の原理」と題した論文を発表、大きな反響を呼んだ^[1][2]。1938年にアメリカへ移住し市民権を獲得、ハーバード大学で教授を務めた^[1]。1948年には標準貫入試験を公表している^[5]。1963年アメリカで没した^[1]。

当時、未開の分野であった土質力学の分野を開拓^[6]。建築物や構造物の基礎支持力の計算に不可欠な公式、テルツァーギの公式（英語版）として名を残す。数々の業績から、土質力学の父と呼ばれる存在となった^[7]。米国土木学会では、土質力学などに功績を有する者への表彰として、カール・テルツァーギ賞を創設している。
