ジョン・グリフィス (数学者)

ジョン・グリフィス（英: John Griffiths、1837年 – 1916年5月）は、ウェールズの数学者、研究者。オックスフォード大学ジーザス・カレッジに約60年間籍を置いていた。

経歴
カーマーゼンシャーのキドウェリー近郊ランギンディーンで生まれ、カウブリッジ・グラマースクールで教育を受けた。1857年、ジーザスカレッジに奨学生として入学し、数学で一級の学位を獲得して、たジュニア・シニア奨学金を勝ち取った。1863年、ジーザスカレッジのフェローに選出され、同大学の講師になった。没するまでフェローシップを保持し、最長在職のフェローとなった。ときどき大学の会計を勤めていた[1]。
身体の弱かった子供時代のレナード・ジェームズ・ロジャースに数学を教えた[2]。
グリフィスは特に解析幾何学に興味を持ち、多くの論文をEducational Times などの数学雑誌に投稿した。三角形幾何学に関する2つの小論文を書いたこともあった。1916年、生まれ育った村で没した。 The Times の死亡記事では"a man of a very sociable and affectionate nature [but] excessively shy". （とても社交的で愛情深い反面、極端に内気な性格の男）と評されている[1]。
