Wahlkreis Weston-super-Mare

Weston-super-Mare ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in der Grafschaft Somerset im Südwesten Englands, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Er besteht seit 1918 und liegt in der Unitary Authority North Somerset. Der Wahlkreis umfasst im Wesentlichen die Stadt Weston-super-Mare.

Geschichte
Der Wahlkreis entstand mit der Umsetzung des Representation of the People Act 1918 aus Teilen der Wahlkreise North Somerset und Wells. 1950, 1983, 1997, 2010 und 2024 nahm die Boundary Commission for England im Rahmen periodischer Überprüfungen verschiedene Anpassungen des Grenzverlaufs vor.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1918–1950: die Urban Districts Clevedon, Portishead und Weston-super-Mare sowie die Rural Districts Axbridge und Long Ashton[2]
- 1950–1983: den Borough Weston-super-Mare, den Urban District Clevedon, den Rural District Axbridge sowie im Rural District Long Ashton die Parishes Kenn, Kingston Seymour und Yatton[2][3]
- 1983–1997: im Woodspring District die Wards Banwell, Blagdon, Churchill, Congresbury, Hutton, Locking, Weston-super-Mare Ashcombe, Weston-super-Mare East, Weston-super-Mare Ellenborough, Weston-super-Mare North, Weston-super-Mare South, Weston-super-Mare Uphill, Weston-super-Mare West, Winscombe, Wrington und Yatton[4]
- 1997–2010: im North Somerset District die Wards Banwell, Blagdon, Churchill, Congresbury, Hutton, Locking, Weston-super-Mare Ashcombe, Weston-super-Mare East, Weston-super-Mare Ellenborough, Weston-super-Mare North, Weston-super-Mare South, Weston-super-Mare Uphill, Weston-super-Mare West und Winscombe[5]
- 2010–2024: in der Unitary Authority North Somerset die Wards Banwell & Winscombe, Blagdon & Churchill, Congresbury, Hutton & Locking, Kewstoke, Weston-super-Mare Central, Weston-super-Mare Clarence & Uphill, Weston-super-Mare East, Weston-super-Mare Milton & Old Worle, Weston-super-Mare North Worle, Weston-super-Mare South, Weston-super-Mare South Worle und Weston-super-Mare West[6]
- seit 2024: in der Unitary Authority North Somerset die Wards Hutton & Locking, Weston-super-Mare Central, Weston-super-Mare Hillside, Weston-super-Mare Kewstoke, Weston-super-Mare Mid Worle, Weston-super-Mare Milton, Weston-super-Mare North Worle, Weston-super-Mare South, Weston-super-Mare South Worle, Weston-super-Mare Uphill, Weston-super-Mare Winterstoke und Wick St Lawrence & St Georges[7]
Mit Ausnahme eines einzigen Jahres, in dem die Liberal Party den Abgeordneten stellte, dominierte die Conservative Party diesen Wahlkreis fast acht Jahrzehnte lang. Dies änderte sich 1997, als Brian Cotter den Sitz für die Liberal Democrats gewann. 2005 musste er sich dem Konservativen John Penrose geschlagen geben. Penrose wiederum verlor 2024 über die Hälfte seiner bisherigen Wählerschaft, was es Dan Aldridge ermöglichte, den Sitz erstmals für die Labour Party zu gewinnen.
