In 1990, the Victorian Football League was renamed as the Australian Football League (AFL) due to its national expansion, incorporating teams from states other than Victoria to become a national competition. 1990 saw the inclusion of teams from Sydney, Brisbane and the West Coast. The following year included Adelaide, marking all five mainland Australian states represented in the competition. This also coincided with the more equitable approaches to team development, such as the AFL Draft (introduced in 1986), Salary Cap (introduced in 1987), a revamped finals system and abolition of the existing zone-based recruiting that had created vastly unbalanced periods of competition and disproportionate wealth and success amongst the clubs.[1] As a result, there has been an increase in public and media attention to the relevancy and fairness of AFL-era statistics for over a decade,[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] in preference over the inherent historic nepotism of state-based leagues.[12]

Comment: This article should continue to be rejected for the mainspace. The "AFL era" is an unofficial and unrecognised statistical delineation, and all official and reliable statistical sources combine VFL/AFL statistics without delineation. Unless or until that changes in an official or less-fringe capacity, an article on this subject is destined to be largely OR, or compiled from sources which are either unreliable or serve more as opinion pieces. It's clear even from the proposed lead section wording that the whole concept's purpose is an attempt to WP:RGW. Aspirex (talk) 21:22, 3 July 2025 (UTC)

- Thanks for your feedback! I have looked extensively at the AFL wiki and I can't find a place for it to fit. It's an emerging (and somewhat contentious) agenda, but has seen a significant increase in favour in younger fans of the sport, given its intrinsically novel and inclusive nature. The purpose for this particular article is that it would be contributed to and developed over time - from people with greater access and resources than I. The VFL exists as a completely separate historical competition when considering the additions of teams from other states and leagues, each with their own history. There is an inherent bias and exclusion - an example being the success of a team, such as Port Adelaide, which has won 36 premierships in the SANFL, but that history is ignored because of the Victorian bias to only include premierships from the VFL.
- I believe this page needs its standalone space to give some equity to what the competition is - national and inclusive
