Ananth Subramaniam (Tamil: ஆனந்த் சுப்பிரமணியம்) is a Malaysian filmmaker and screenwriter. He is best known for directing the short film Bleat! (2025), which became the first Malaysian short film selected for the Critics’ Week (La Semaine de la Critique) section at the Cannes Film Festival.[1][2]

Ananth Subramaniam co-founded Idio Sync Inc, a production initiative dedicated to developing stories infused with Tamil culture. [3]

Early life and education

Ananth Subramaniam was born in Malaysia and is of Tamil descent.[4] He holds an MA in filmmaking from Kingston University London. Before that, he studied architecture at the undergraduate level, which he began making short films and developed an interest in visual storytelling.[5] The first short film he made in Malaysia, Colourless which won the BMW Shorties Grand Prize Award 2018 along with Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound Design. [6]

Career

Ananth Subramaniam gained international recognition in 2025 with his short film Bleat!. The film was selected for the Critics’ Week section at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was filmed entirely in Banting, Selangor, Ananth Subramaniam’s hometown. The film was produced through a multinational collaboration involving Sixtymac Pictures (Malaysia), Epicmedia Productions (Philippines), and DW (France). [7]

In 2019 his short film Liar Land received a Special Mention at the Locarno Film Festival.[8]

In 2022 short film The House of Brick and Stone screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea.[9][10]

In December 2025, Ananth Subramaniam was named Artist of the Year at the BURO Impact Awards. [11]

In addition to festival screenings, Ananth Subramaniam has participated in a number of international film development and talent initiatives, including the Next Step Programme at La Semaine de la Critique, Berlinale Talents Tokyo, and the Asian Producers Network at the Singapore International Film Festival.[12][13][14]

Ananth Subramaniam’s films focus on storytelling that examines cultural identity, heritage, and human experience. His work often combines elements of humour and social observation, and his background in architecture has been noted as influencing the structure and detail of his narratives.
