Periods in abbreviations

Why does U.S. always have the periods but UK, UN, BIOT etc. don't? 2607:FEA8:FF01:4FA6:A91B:6034:B72F:FAFB (talk) 08:08, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

In most cases, we should have "US", especially where consistency with other initialisms calls for it. So "U.S." in this article should be replaced with "US". See MOS:US. Largoplazo (talk) 12:35, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
I took care of it, and also found five instances of "U.K.", so I changed those too. Largoplazo (talk) 12:40, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

Pronunciation

On 22 May I added the pronunciation ˈtʃeɪɡɒs ("CHAY-goss"): https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chagos_Archipelago&diff=prev&oldid=1291627283

Two days User:Elrondil reverted my addition, under the description "Proper pronunciation": https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chagos_Archipelago&diff=prev&oldid=1291907451

Elrondil may well be right that ˈtʃɑːɡɒs is "correct" locally, but Youglish overwhelmingly shows ˈtʃeɪɡɒs as the British pronunciation - in 25 out of 26 examples including all the ones by news sources and politicians: http://youglish.com/pronounce/chagos/english/uk

I think it's at least worth including ˈtʃeɪɡɒs in the list of pronunciations. Any objections if I put it back in?

Edbrims (talk) 14:20, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

@Edbrims: Pronunciation was changed here by Sgly. I have no opinion/position at all on pronunciation. Elrondil (talk) 00:20, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Objection with respect, because British pronunciation of places like Chagos, Hawai'i and countries like Nepal and Senegal is wrong. Why should British pronunciation become the accepted global standard when it is plain wrong? Locals know how to pronounce the names of their countries/places correctly. Follow how the locals pronounce these names. Sgly (talk) 03:45, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
@Sgly: How locals pronounce the English name (since this is the English-language Wikipedia) of their place should take precedence, but could other significant pronunciations of the English name also be included? Elrondil (talk) 09:29, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Yes. Just mention this very clearly ("other significant pronunciations") after the correct pronunciation. Sgly (talk) 12:34, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Thanks both (and apologies User:Elrondil for getting you into this by pasting the wrong name)! I'll re-add ˈtʃeɪɡɒs at the end of the list as another significant pronunciation. Edbrims (talk) 13:20, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

When will the United Kingdom hand the Chagos Archipelago back to Mauritius?

When will the United Kingdom hand the Chagos Archipelago back to Mauritius? I can't find any definite answers on the Internet. 2001:8003:9078:2401:1B5:FC5D:DB31:242E (talk) 06:24, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

Likely by the end of this year. The deal needs to be ratified in Parliament first. The objection period ended on the 3rd July, but now there's the matter of it being heard in Parliament. The initial reading was on the 15th July, as per this: https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/4004 81.100.136.95 (talk) 17:39, 6 August 2025 (UTC)

I propose merging Geography of the British Indian Ocean Territory into Chagos Archipelago due to WP:OVERLAP. John Smith Ri (talk) 07:00, 11 December 2025 (UTC)

This would make sense while the British Indian Ocean Territory exists, however if/when the territory is handed over to Mauritius the administrative situation may prompt a change in how this article is presented, and thus whether this article would itself need a Geography subarticle. CMD (talk) 09:13, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
I disagree. It's ok to send readers to Chagos Archipelago in the British Indian Ocean Territory entry, but the history of the Chagos Archipelago is complex and unique, involving numerous countries and governments and peoples. If the Chagos Archipelago entry were merged into the British Indian Ocean Territory's, I believe many of the nuances and important details of Chagos history and people would not be featured. ~2026-31493-0 (talk) 14:40, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
I disagree with the merge, for the same reasons as CMD and the anon user above me. Hansen Sebastian (Talk) 07:47, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

Delayed

Erm…the deal is DELAYED. It hasn’t been withdrawn. The Telegraph is not an impartial source of news. Google it ~2026-60926-5 (talk) 06:20, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
