RfC - Is the Horn of Africa region the same as Somali Peninsula?
In lead it says “Horn of Africa, also known as Somali Peninsula”, are these two considered to be the same? If not the same Somali Peninsula should be excluded from lead. Leechjoel9 (talk) 08:02, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Not the same The definition of a peninsula is landmass that is surrounded by water. The Horn of Africa region which consist of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia, stretches far into mainland of Africa and are not surrounded by water. Here some sources that distinguishes Somali peninsula from Horn of Africa, and also includes Somali peninsula as a part of of Horn of Africa region:
Makes a distinction between Greater Ethiopia and Somali Peninsula throughout the paper. Somali peninsula covers Somalia, Somaliland and a fifth of Greater Ethiopia.
“The Somali Peninsula is part of the Horn of Africa and is a term used to refer to eastern Ethiopia and Somalia”
“Part of the Horn of Africa region is also known as the Somali peninsula; this term is typically used when referring to lands of Somalia and eastern Ethiopia ..”
“The Somali Peninsula, one of the most culturally homogeneous regions of Africa, was divided into British Somaliland, French Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, Ethiopian Somaliland (the Ogaden region), and what is now Kenya's North-Eastern Province.”
Describes Somali Peninsula as areas that consist of the Somali Plateu and sorrounding areas and not as the whole HOA region.Leechjoel9 (talk) 08:19, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- Maybe Somali Peninsula could redirect to Greater Somalia. Super Ψ Dro 11:53, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Economy section
The Economy section does not describe the economy enough, not explaining what is grown there, what is traded. The big numbers of the value are supplied. There is a lot about nations unhappy because the national governments are not able to get money from the trade because people do it directly — what is the trade? I think it is mainly agriculture, both crops and animals, but that is me guessing from the few words included and reading about areas with good rainfall in the Geography section. I had hoped to learn more about the economy of this area, and possibly its role as part of the African continent. I hope there are editors who have sources about the economy and can write some plain sentences about it. - - Prairieplant (talk) 01:13, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
- I offer one source from 2018, on the economies of 4 nations and opportunities for investment, especially by South Korea. It is by the Africa Development Bank, and found online here. Maybe it will help in describing the economy of the Horn of Africa in more specific terms. - - Prairieplant (talk) 01:37, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
Map 2022
The maps currently shown on the page aren't too helpful. On looking through the options available at Commons today, this map (added in 2013) is an obvious candidate for this page.

5 countries? Why? Isn't it 4?
According to the source cited by the article (Encyclopedia Britannica), the Horn of Africa is comprised of Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
Why, then, does the article say "5 sovereign states" in the standout box? Isn't this incorrect? (I attempted to edit it to say 4, but the edit was undone as "non-constructive"). 23.121.7.97 (talk) 17:22, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

- @Legendarycool can you please stop adding Puntland on the list of unrecognised countries? Oromia is more of a country than Puntland since Ethiopia a federal state with its capital Addis located IN Oromia. 95.146.177.157 (talk) 16:17, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- First I know how a federal state works and I would count Oromia… if it
- Didn’t recognise Ethiopia’s central government
- Acted independent from the central government
- while Puntland does want to fully reunite with Somalia when it is more stable it in now a ‘unrecognised state’
- P.S. despite this disagreement I nonetheless wish you a good day. Legendarycool (talk) 23:25, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia should be a source of reliability and not a propaganda for pushing the unrecognized Somaliland alongside with the only 4 recognized nations of Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. In fact, currently speaking half of what used to be Somaliland from Sool and Sanaag regions have rejoined Somalia. Whoever is behind this disinformation campaign will be reported to main office.
- The nations of Horn of Africa should be based on the UN Charter and not what some editor personal feelings may be. Thank you 2601:19B:483:8960:5D2E:DE9:571C:2549 (talk) 22:09, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
- Somaliland is a de facto state. A sovereign state doesn't need recognition for it to be a sovereign state. Examples of other states with limited recognition are Abkhazia, Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, Palestine, South Ossetia, Taiwan, Transnistria, and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. We base articles on reliable sources and not what a single organization says. 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 06:52, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- If what you’re saying is true, then WHY don’t you include Palestine? Does Wikipedia editors on here recognize Palestine as a de facto State since its most nations around the world recognize it more than somaliland or the other nations you mentioned? Let’s have an honest rule here instead of picking and choosing which one you guys want to follow. 2601:19B:483:8960:B9BD:FE9D:F78D:42AC (talk) 09:21, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
- Putting Somaliland in the same category as countries like fully recognized states like Ethiopia and Eritrea is disingenuous at best.
- "We base articles on reliable sources and not what a single organization says."
- Hah! Are you really just dismiss the UN as some random organization just because it doesn't agree with your agenda? Teefight (talk) 00:19, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Abo Yemen
- A country does need international recognition to be recognized as a country. It can be included in a seperate section like "disputed territories" but please stop pretending its on the same level as official and recognized countries. Teefight (talk) 02:04, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- no it doesn't 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 05:59, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- Why was Somaliland's "partially recognised" removed? It's listed as partially recognised in the infobox so I don't know what the problem is. Please do not revert my edit without a proper reason. @Abo Yemen Teefight (talk) 00:42, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
- Somaliland is a de facto state. It doesn't matter whether it is internationally recognized or not. You removed a note that says
Do not remove Somaliland without an established consensus on this article's talk page; unrecognized countries are countries
. Mind explaining why? 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 04:51, 2 February 2026 (UTC)- @Abo Yemen I didn't remove anything. You're confusing it with another edit. The edit I made was simply clarifying that Somaliland is a partially recognised state, matching with the infobox. Teefight (talk) 15:13, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
- I just looked at it again and yes I did remove the note. Sorry about that, I just thought it was unnecessary since it's not unrecognized anymore.
- But it should be mentioned that it's partially recognised, matching with the infobox. Teefight (talk) 15:15, 2 February 2026 (UTC)

It is one of the largest peninsulas in the world
Since the area is given, there must be a conventional border on the map. Are there rules for determining the border between the peninsula and the mainland? Will every cartographer calculate the same area of the peninsula, or is this a subjective calculation method? Mir.Nalezinski (talk) 20:30, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
Horn of Africa and Somali Peninsula are two separate entries
The entry Horn of Africa is a political term (similarly to Western Europe), the second entry Somali Peninsula is a geographical term (similarly to the Scandinavian Peninsula). There should be two separate entry articles, of course with reference to each other, especially since their surfaces are not the same. Mir.Nalezinski (talk) 13:10, 16 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Mir.Nalezinski, it would be useful if you provided Wikipedia:Reliable sources that support your claim, so that we can create a separate article for the Somali Peninsula 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 13:55, 16 June 2025 (UTC)
- The German and French Wikipedias have the term "Horn of Africa", which is a political-historical term. The Somali Peninsula is a geographic term. The surface of the former varies over time, the latter is constant, and of course they are not the same surface. This means that there should be two separate entries in Wikipedia. Add Warsengali Sultante, which is one of the oldest sultantes that is still exist. Second, Somaliland is not recognized by all international communities. Adding Somaliland will then require all unrecognized regions in Africa to be mentioned in all Wikipedia pages. https://thinkafrica.net/kingdom-of-warsangali-1218-1886ad-spotlight-on-middle-ages-african-global-trade-hub/#:~:text=The%20Kingdom%20was%20established%20in,it%20became%20a%20British%20protectorate.
