Missouri HOUSE BILL NO. 2009

Proposed addition: 2026 study on mental health of parents of transgender youth

The article documents the policies in detail but has little on measured effects on the people they target, and nothing on effects on their families. I would like to add a short paragraph covering a longitudinal study published in Psychological Science in August 2026.

Proposed text:

A longitudinal study published in Psychological Science in 2026 tracked 160 American adolescents and 167 of their parents from 2022 through the weeks surrounding the January 2025 inauguration. Parents of transgender adolescents reported rising anxiety and depression and falling positive affect across the eight weeks after the election, while parents of cisgender adolescents drawn from a politically similar sample showed no comparable change; differences among the adolescents themselves were smaller and less consistent. The authors noted that the executive orders issued during the study period were largely blocked in court at the time, so the changes they measured followed from anticipated rather than implemented policy.
