Notifying page for peer review of controversial template I'm creating

Draft:Template:Targeting of political opponents and civil society Trump sidebar

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I've made controversial templates before but with more help from other editors, so I just wanted to gauge the temperature before posting this across dozens of pages and potentially causing issues if it's flawed in some way I'm not seeing. Some ideas I'm having are redoing the LGBT and military deployments sections since they're so short, but I'm not sure where I'd put that information if those sections were removed. 'Slave' vs 'enslaved person'

There seems to be an ongoing campaign to replace the word 'slave' with the word 'enslaved person' (accordingly 'enslaved man', 'enslaved women', etc.), and '(slave)owner' with 'enslaver'. This is apparently some kind of new uber-PC pious usage emanating from US academia that is supposed to somehow especially highlight the inherent iniquity, illegitimacy and violence of slavery and the human dignity of its victims, especially those of African origin in America, as if 'slave' by itself didn't already imply a human and as if slavery by itself wasn't already agreed to be a bad thing. 'Enslaver' has the additional problem of confusing the person who originally captured and sold the victim or their parents with those who owned them later. The blatant and demonstrative enforcing of a present value judgement on the past is obvious, too, as if the past wasn't already full of things we consider unjust without pointing it out explicitly. Unsurprisingly, the effort seems to be mostly directed at articles about African Americans, and not at those about, say, slaves in Ancient Rome, although the inconsistency is obvious: the whole thing is really motivated by present-day racial politics in the US, and moreover with a hyperfixation on it and utter disinterest in a broader historical, geographical, cultural and anthropological perspective. I think Wikipedia should have some stance on this issue. Given that 'slave' is still far more common (1, 2, 3, 4, although interestingly the intersection with feminism seems to provoke a much stronger 'gallant' reaction), that the paraphrases with 'enslaved' are much clumsier and less natural, as well as the overall inanity and pointlessness of this linguistic initiative, I'd suggest sticking to 'slave' as a matter of policy and reverting these edits rather than making Wikipedia a tacit participant in the campaign before it has succeeded. Anonymous44 (talk) 10:02, 28 March 2026 (UTC)

I mean, if it's "inane and pointless", why would Wikipedia bother having a policy on it? It seems like it doesn't matter? Spookyaki (talk) 13:20, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
Doing pointless things is bad per definition, but I also did list several other reasons. I used 'policy' in the most general sense; perhaps this is an issue for WP:MOS.--Anonymous44 (talk) 17:45, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
