Talk:Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2009–2010 actor

The table of casts in the article contains a column "2009–2010 actor", but I can find no production for that period in the article. None of the actors in that column has a wikilink, so I assume it's not a notable production and that column ought to be removed. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 11:01, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

A Requested Move discussion recently roughly determined that the primary topic for the term "Twelve Angry Men" was not this article, but rather the Sidney Lumet film 12 Angry Men. However, there was little consensus on what to do with this article. A number of options were considered at the discussion, which are listed below:

a. Keep this article at the current title, with the disambiguator being (story)
b. Change the article so that it has a different disambiguator (please propose one)
c. Partially undo the previous rough consensus, deeming this article the primary topic for Twelve Angry Men but not 12 Angry Men
d. Merge this article with the Twelve Angry Men (Studio One) article, and retitle it Twelve Angry Men (teleplay)

Background - please read: This article was designed as a broad-concept article for the various versions of the Reginald Rose story of twelve jurors that attempt to determine a person's innocence or guilt. The most notable of these, by a considerable margin, is the 1957 Sidney Lumet film 12 Angry Men, which was recently determined to be the primary topic. Normally, this would preclude the use of a broad-concept article, as those are only supposed to be used if there is no primary topic. However, editors in that discussion felt that having one would be beneficial to reader understanding, due to the complicated interplay between variations of the story. To make a long story short, it was first created as an episode of the television series Studio One, and then adapted into all manner of other media. However, following the release of the Sidney Lumet film, a majority of the following adaptations were adapted not from the television episode, but rather directly from the film itself; having a page that can explain this seemed useful. In addition, a number of the adaptations are not actually called "Twelve Angry Men", but rather other things, so finding them would be difficult as they would not be on the disambiguation page.

There was, however, considerable disagreement on what to do with the article. The suggestion implemented was to use the disambiguator (story), but nobody was very happy with it, including me, who suggested it. However, nobody was able to come up with a better one; if you have an idea, please suggest it here. There was a consensus that the difference between Twelve Angry Men and 12 Angry Men was too small for it to be considered a WP:SMALLDETAILS difference, but that consensus was relatively weak and can be overturned here. Another proposal that gained significant traction was to merge this article with Twelve Angry Men (Studio One), the original version of the story, and rename it Twelve Angry Men (teleplay). What should be done with the article? Ladtrack (talk) 04:22, 10 April 2026 (UTC)

It appears to me that it ought to be merged into Twelve Angry Men (Studio One), Twelve Angry Men (1955 play), or both as a form of "Legacy" section. It overlaps too heavily with those, and doesn't really have a clear subject. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 06:22, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
  • If there's been a ruling that the Lumet film is the primary topic of Twelve Angry Men (with which I would not necessarily agree, but I don't believe that this is the current topic of disucssion), I would choose Option (b) above, with the broad-concept article remaining distinct and being renamed to Twelve Angry Men (teleplay). Tevildo (talk) 07:16, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
If there's been a ruling that the Lumet film is the primary topic of Twelve Angry Men (with which I would not necessarily agree, but I don't believe that this is the current topic of disucssion) There was a consensus at the previous discussion, but it was weak. The closer explicitly said it could be undone in a follow up discussion. If you would like this article to stay at Twelve Angry Men, you can vote for option c. Ladtrack (talk) 14:33, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
As stated in the previous discussion, my preference would be for Twelve Angry Men to be the dab page, as the term doesn't have a clear primary topic. However, that option isn't on the table at the moment. The current status quo (with "story" as the disambiguator) is OK, but I think BrechtBro's suggestion below is a good compromise. Tevildo (talk) 17:02, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Undecided but oppose Twelve Angry Men (teleplay). As I stated in the previous discussion, Twelve Angry Men (Studio One) already exists and that is the correct disambiguation for television episodes, and that episode is notable. As I was also saying in that discussion, a teleplay is merely a script and it makes no sense to make an entirely separate article for a film's script. They are not separate enough topics and as such we do no even have such split articles on Wikipedia (except ones for unproduced screenplays and I guess The Gardener's Son (screenplay), which doesn't really count because it's really a book article for a screenplay that is actually different from its film). It also makes no sense because Wikipedia articles should be titled/disambiguated to reflect the focus of their contents, and the focus of this article is very much not on the original script but rather the general courtroom drama franchise. If a film marks the start of a franchise of media, we wouldn't move the film article to be a broad-concept article dedicated to its script. We would keep the notable film article and have a separate franchise article if warranted. I don't love the current title because it is not WP:CONSISTENT, but I'm still unsure what the solution is here. Even Twelve Angry Men (play) makes more sense in my mind, but that conflicts for several reasons. But what do we think of Twelve Angry Men (franchise)? Οἶδα (talk) 09:12, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
But what do we think of Twelve Angry Men (franchise)? If that happened, I would be okay with it (obviously, I proposed it at the previous discussion). However, as I said, I wasn't very happy with any of my suggestions, and here's why I wasn't happy with that one. The exact definition of a franchise is kind of fuzzy, but generally they have some degree of connective tissue, even if they don't necessarily share the same continuity. For example, all of the Godzilla films clearly are interconnected, even if most aren't canon with each other. These works aren't really related in the same way; they're just a series of adaptations of the same story. It would be like considering A Star is Born a franchise. If we really tried, we could probably stretch the definition enough that this could be considered a franchise, but most people wouldn't consider it one. Ladtrack (talk) 15:09, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
I agree that franchise would be a bit of a stretch of the term. It may be technically correct in some ways, but I believe it generally refers to intellectual property that is being exploited into multiple forms of content, typically by a single form. There are Godzilla toys, books, comics, video games, etc. Twelve Angry Men has been adapted many times, and every time it has been a drama. BrechtBro (talk) 15:38, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
Just to note I'd oppose "franchise" - this isn't a case of multiple works set in the same milieu, it's a case of multiple adaptations of a single work. Tevildo (talk) 17:02, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
they're just a series of adaptations of the same story
That makes sense. We should go for the clearest title/dab for readers and if it isn't considered a franchise by any reliable sources then there's really no indication readers would understand it as such. Οἶδα (talk) 20:51, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support for Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men, weak support Twelve Angry Men (drama), strongly oppose merge: A merge to Twelve Angry Men (teleplay), as Οἶδα states, would move the correctly titled Studio One article (which also needs notice of this discussion). A merge to Twelve Angry Men (Studio One) without changing the title would create a weighting problem: the subject of that article should be the TV episode, not a lengthy history of adaptation that followed the success of the film 12 Angry Men. There does need to be, I think, a careful merge of 12 Angry Men#Adaptations and parodies and this article, particularly Twelve Angry Men (story)#Homages and references in other works (I previously proposed one solution when I was beginning to look at this). Maybe there's a natural disambiguator like Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men. Perhaps there are additional ways to untangle this and move some content around, this article could be improved a lot, but each of the derivative works with it's own page has independent notability. As for disambiguators: (teleplay) is inadequate. I have a slight preference for think Twelve Angry Men (drama), or even (courtroom drama), as more precise and most fitting vs other parentheticals, per my comment above re: franchise: all versions of this are dramas. BrechtBro (talk) 15:33, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
You're right about the notification. I've done that now. Ladtrack (talk) 18:51, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men is good. Though it begs the question Telvido mentioned above about if 12 Angry Men is the primary topic of "Twelve Angry Men". Like you referenced in the previous discussion: Ocean's Eleven vs Ocean's 11. If Twelve Angry Men redirects to 12 Angry Men then the title Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men is not clear.
I also wonder if Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men and articles titled like that (e.g. Adaptations of Les Misérables, Adaptations of The Phantom of the Opera) are incorrectly titled. If these are list articles then the correct title would presumably be List of adaptations of Twelve Angry Men, not Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men. Such as List of adaptations of Beowulf.
Twelve Angry Men (drama) is also good. The crux is a play, though the screenplay version doesn't fit snugly in that definition. But as you say, all versions of this are dramas. That was what I was grasping for when I commented "Even Twelve Angry Men (play) makes more sense in my mind" above. The (drama) disambiguator is also somewhat established. Οἶδα (talk) 22:21, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename and refocus to Adaptation of Twelve Angry Men. I think 12 Angry Men is pretty clearly the primary topic here which I do think precludes a broad concept article about the overall story. But that doesn't mean we can't have an article about all the adaptation of this general story. Loki (talk) 16:20, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
I think Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men (plural) would be a good title for the page as it stands. Tevildo (talk) 17:02, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
Whoops, the plural was what I meant. Loki (talk) 20:41, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
Looking at the page again, I agree, this is an elegant solution that captures what that page does, and it only discusses the story itself in summary style. "Adaptations of" is perhaps not the most accurate description to describe the various pop culture adaptations and riffs. It is also consistent with pages like Adaptations of A Christmas Carol and Adaptations of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Relatedly, there's maintenance needed at Category:Twelve Angry Men now that there is no longer a clear main article. BrechtBro (talk) 18:55, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
@~2026-20962-73 weighting here. I agree with others that "story" is not an ideal disambiguator. It's somewhat vague and doesn't clearly reflect the scope of the page. A re-title along the prosposed lines would be more precise and actually consistent with what the article covers.
I would also oppose a merge into Studio One teleplay, as that would certainly conflate a distinct topic and create undue weight in that article. Rmagna (talk) 21:08, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support for Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men - this seems like the best description of what this article actually is, and given how many adaptations there are it seems like a useful article to have. Lijil (talk) 16:37, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support for Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men - As has been stated and summed up nicely above "this seems like the best description of what this article actually is, and given how many adaptations there are it seems like a useful article to have". Lukewarmbeer (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support for Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men per above.  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 16:40, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support for Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men It seems to better reflect what the article actually covers—the range of adaptations—whereas (story) is a bit vague and doesn’t clearly signal scope.
I oppose merging into the Studio One article, because that could create weighting issues and blur two distinct topics. That said, I do think the article could benefit from some refocusing so it more evenly covers the various adaptations. KittyHawkFlyer (talk) 13:01, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support Adaptations of Twelve Angry Men reluctantly. This article is very helpful to the reader so just mindlessly merging it to another article (like the famous 1957 film) seems unwarranted. My reluctance is that this is basically a fleshed-out disambiguation page. However, given the large number of adaptations, I don't think it matters too much.
