COI vs SME clarification

Hey there - I was hoping I could get some clarification on whether editing articles within certain topic could reasonably be considered me interacting with the topic as an subject matter expert (SME) or if it could be considered a COI (and I should proceed as such).
I recently made an edit to Transportation in Northern Virginia after coming across the article in WP:TFD and noticing a section needed some updates. Without getting too much into it (unless an admin needs me to) my day job is for a transportation agency in the DC area - so out of precaution I followed the COI guidance post-edits. However after reviewing the criteria I wasn't sure if in this scenario I would count as an SME or not (since I do have a fair bit of working knowledge on the topic). Long story short, on this topic/this article, should I follow COI procedures, or can I edit it as an SME, following COI procedures where I may be professionally connected? netstars22 (talk) 21:26, 14 February 2026 (UTC)

- Thanks for that. May I ask which organization you are connected to? TheTechie[she/they] | talk? 23:20, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- I'd prefer not to say but I can say it is not any of the organizations within the section that I edited. netstars22 (talk) 23:34, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- Then in that case, you're fine. Only if you want an edit to be made on an organization you are connected to, you have to follow the COI policies. TheTechie[she/they] | talk? 00:06, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
- Got it! Just wanted to be sure. In that case would I/someone have the clear to remove the connected-contributor on that article's talk page? netstars22 (talk) 00:15, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
