Could someone look over my latest edit at Gisr el-Mudir? Some crazy hydraulic lift theory had found its way in.

I just did this edit at Gisr el-Mudir in response to some crazy-sounding hydraulic lift theory that had found its way into the article and had seemed to be uncritically accepted by whoever added it. This sounded like fringe material to me, and it was mentioned as such by Doug Weller on the Pyramid of Djoser talk page, as well as being called "absurd" by one Egyptologist in a paper decrying the current state of the humanities in academia (see page 4). Given that, I thought we shouldn't be trumpeting this thing as if it is received wisdom. Since I'm not a regular here, I was rather careful in my response, but if someone else feels a more aggressive approach is called for, I would have no problem with that. I think that’s fair, though I’m pretty new myself. Their language was a bit too confident/misleading for something controversial. LavenderPress (talk) 00:04, 20 June 2026 (UTC)

Great Theban Revolt has been created

I created the article Great Theban Revolt, which is associated with the Ptolemaic Empire. Welcome to contribute to it. Temo (talk) 04:34, 29 June 2026 (UTC)

Bringing an error and a mis-cited source to wider attention...

Because an error that I recently came across still has me somewhat disturbed, and because it got into the English Wikipedia (and some others) via the German Wikipedia, I wanted to bring it to wider attention here: see this discussion. The error was in Sanakht, and was corrected using Horus Sa. Briefly, the problem was that a claim was made about a belief of Wolfgang Helck, and this was cited to one of his own publications, but the cited (German-language) source didn't back up the claim at all, and the claim was actually contradicted elsewhere in that source! The error was added to the corresponding article on the German Wikipedia back in 2011 and has been there ever since. I've only corrected it on the English Wikipedia. I've never known much about cross-wiki interactions. I posted at the village pump, here, asking if there's a way to handle this that I'm not aware of. A. Parrot (talk) 19:44, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
I think this is more common than you think. Footnotes provide the impression of reliability. But this is a false impression. I tried to check the references, for this particular case but do not have the literature here.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Udimu (talkcontribs) 13:28, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
@Udimu: Well, fortunately, Google Books currently provides a Preview-mode view for Wolfgang Helck's Untersuchungen zur Thinitenzeit, the most important source for this case, that happens to cover the pages in question: pages 20-21, page 103, and page 108. In fact, that's how I was able to check it. Will that suffice? --Colin Douglas Howell (talk) 19:18, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
the google links do not work for me. I will try another time! Udimu (talk) 19:30, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
