Wahlkreis Braintree

Braintree ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in der Grafschaft Essex im Osten Englands, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Er besteht seit 1974 und liegt in den Bezirken Braintree und Uttlesford. Bedeutende Orte im Wahlkreis sind Braintree, Great Notley, Great Yeldham, Halstead und Sible Hedingham.

Geschichte
Die Boundary Commission for England schuf den Wahlkreis im Hinblick auf die Unterhauswahl im Februar 1974. Er entstand aus Teilen des weiterhin bestehenden Wahlkreises Maldon. 1983, 1997, 2010 und 2024 nahm die Boundary Commission im Rahmen periodischer Überprüfungen verschiedene Änderungen des Grenzverlaufs vor.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1974–1983: die Urban Districts Braintree & Bocking und Witham, den Rural District Braintree sowie im Rural District Chelmsford die Civil Parishes Boreham, Broomfield, Chignall, Good Easter, Great & Little Leighs, Great Waltham, Little Waltham, Mashbury, Pleshey, Roxwell, Springfield und Writtle[2]
- 1983–1997: im Braintree District die Wards Black Notley, Bocking North, Bocking South, Braintree Central, Braintree East, Braintree West, Coggeshall, Cressing, Hatfield Peverel, Kelvedon, Panfield, Rayne, Terling, Three Fields, Witham Central, Witham Chipping Hill, Witham North, Witham Silver End & Rivenhall, Witham South und Witham West sowie im Borough of Chelmsford die Wards Broomfield & Chignall, Good Easter Mashbury & Roxwell, Great & Little Leighs & Little Waltham, Great Waltham & Pleshey und Writtle[3]
- 1997–2010: im Braintree District die Wards Black Notley, Bocking North, Bocking South, Braintree Central, Braintree East, Braintree West, Coggeshall, Cressing, Earls Colne, Gosfield, Hatfield Peveril, Kelvedon, Panfield, Rayne, Terling, Three Fields, Witham Central, Witham Chipping Hill, Witham North, Witham Silver End & Rivenhall, Witham South und Witham West[4]

- seit 2024: im Braintree District die Wards Bocking Blackwater, Bocking North, Bocking South, Braintree Central & Beckers Green, Braintree South, Braintree West, Bumpstead, Gosfield & Greenstead Green, Great Notley & Black Notley, Halstead St Andrew’s, Halstead Trinity, Hedingham, Rayne, Stour Valley North, Stour Valley South, Three Fields und Yeldham sowie im Uttlesford District die Wards Felsted & Stebbing und The Sampfords[6]
Erster Abgeordneter war Tony Newton von der Conservative Party. Nachdem er fünfmal wiedergewählt worden war, musste er sich 1997 Alan Hurst von der Labour Party geschlagen geben. Hurst wiederum unterlag 2005 dem konservativen Kandidaten Brooks Newmark. Auf ihn folgte sein Parteikollege James Cleverly, der den Kabinetten von Boris Johnson, Liz Truss und Rishi Sunak in verschiedenen Funktionen angehörte.
