Wahlkreis Lowestoft

Lowestoft ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in der Grafschaft Suffolk im Osten Englands, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Nachdem er bereits von 1885 bis 1983 existiert hatte, besteht er wieder seit 2024 im Bezirk East Suffolk. Bedeutende Orte im Wahlkreis sind Beccles, Carlton Colville, Kessingland, Lowestoft und Worlingham.

Geschichte
Der Wahlkreis entstand bei der Umsetzung des Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, als der Zweierwahlkreis East Suffolk in fünf Einerwahlkreise aufgeteilt wurde. Erste Anpassungen erfolgten mit dem Representation of the People Act 1918. Die Boundary Commission for England nahm 1950 im Rahmen einer periodischen Überprüfungen verschiedene Änderungen des Grenzverlaufs vor. 1983 löste sie den Wahlkreis Lowestoft auf und verteilte sein Gebiet auf den neuen Wahlkreis Waveney sowie den bereits bestehenden Great Yarmouth. Im Hinblick auf die Unterhauswahl 2024 stellte die Boundary Commission den Wahlkreis Lowestoft wieder her, zusammengesetzt aus Teilen des aufgelösten Wahlkreises Waveney.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1885–1918: den Borough Southwold, die sessional divisions Beccles, Bungay, Lothingland und Mutford, Teile der sessional division Blything sowie die in Suffolk gelegenen Teile des Borough Great Yarmouth[2]
- 1918–1950: die Boroughs Beccles, Lowestoft und Southwold, die Urban Districts Bungay und Oulton Broad, die Rural Districts Mutford & Lothingland und Wangford sowie im Rural District Blything die Parishes Benacre, Covehithe, Easton Bavents, Frostenden, Henstead, Reydon, South Cove und Wrentham[2]
- 1950–1983: die Boroughs Beccles, Lowestoft und Southwold, die Urban Districts Bungay und Halesworth sowie die Rural Districts Lothingland und Wainford[2][3]
- seit 2024: im East Suffolk District die Wards Beccles & Worlingham, Carlton & Whitton, Carlton Colville, Gunton & St Margarets, Harbour & Normanston, Kessingland, Kirkley & Pakefield, Lothingland und Oulton Broad[4]
Bis in die frühen 1920er Jahre war der Wahlkreis zwischen der Conservative Party und der Liberal Party (bzw. deren Abspaltung National Liberal Party) umkämpft. Es folgte eine zwei Jahrzehnte dauernde Phase konservativer Dominanz, bis zum ersten Sieg eines Kandidaten der Labour Party im Jahr 1945. Bei der Unterhauswahl 1959 holte James Prior den Sitz für die Konservativen zurück und hielt ihn bis zur Auflösung 1983; in den 1970er Jahren hatte er mehrere Ministerposten inne. Nach der Wiederherstellung setzte sich bei der Unterhauswahl die Labour-Kandidatin Jess Asato durch.
