Wahlkreis des Vereinigten Königreichs

Huntingdon ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in der Grafschaft Cambridgeshire im Osten Englands, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Nachdem er bereits von 1832 bis 1918 existiert hatte, besteht er wieder seit 1983. Bedeutende Orte im Wahlkreis sind Huntingdon, St Ives und Godmanchester. Bekanntester Abgeordneter war der frühere Premierminister John Major.

Geschichte
Seit dem Model Parliament von 1295 entsandte der Parlamentsbezirk Huntingdon ununterbrochen zwei Abgeordnete ins Unterhaus. In der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts war Oliver Cromwell für kurze Zeit einer der Repräsentanten der Stadt Huntingdon im Parlament. In Übereinstimmung mit dem Reform Act 1867 wurde der Zweierwahlkreis vor der Unterhauswahl 1868 in einen Einerwahlkreis umgewandelt. Mit dem Representation of the People Act 1918 erfolgte eine Zusammenlegung mit dem Wahlkreis Huntingdonshire und der Stadtwahlkreis hörte auf zu existieren. Huntingdon wurde stets von Mitglieder der Tories bzw. der Conservative Party vertreten. Lediglich kurzzeitig von 1885 bis 1886 sowie von 1906 bis 1910 vertraten Mitglieder der Liberal Party den Wahlkreis.
Im Hinblick auf die Unterhauswahl 1983 schuf die Boundary Commission for England erneut einen Wahlkreis Huntingdon, der aus dem aufgelösten Wahlkreis Huntingdonshire und einem Teil des weiterhin bestehenden Wahlkreises Peterborough hervorging. Erster Abgeordneter wurde der Konservative John Major, der zuvor vier Jahre lang Huntingdonshire vertreten hatte. In der Regierung von Margaret Thatcher hatte er mehrere Ministerposten inne, von 1990 bis 1997 war er selbst Premierminister. Auf Major folgte 2001 mit Jonathan Djanogly ein weiterer Konservativer. Nach über zwei Jahrzehnten wurde er 2024 von seinem Parteikollegen Ben Obese-Jecty abgelöst.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1832–1885: Die Städte Huntingdon and Godmanchester
- 1885–1918: die sessional divisions Leightonstone und Toseland mit Huntingdon, Godmanchester und St Neots[2]
- 1983–1997: im District of Huntingdonshire die Wards Brampton, Bury, Earith, Ellington, Elton, Farcet, Fenstanton, Godmanchester, Hemingford Abbots & Hilton, Hemingford Grey, Houghton & Wyton, Huntingdon North, Huntingdon West, Kimbolton, Needingworth, Ramsey, Sawtry, Somersham, Stilton, St Ives North, St Ives South, The Stukeleys, Upwood & The Raveleys, Warboys und Yaxley sowie in der City of Peterborough die Wards Barnack, Glinton, Northborough, Werrington und Wittering[3]
- 1997–2010: im District of Huntingdonshire die Wards Brampton, Buckden, Eaton Ford, Eaton Socon, Ellington, Eynesbury, Fenstanton, Godmanchester, Gransden, Hemingford Abbots & Hilton, Hemingford Grey, Houghton & Wyton, Huntingdon North, Huntingdon West, Kimbolton, Needingworth, Paxton, Priory Park, St Ives North, St Ives South, Staughton, The Offords und The Stukeleys[4]
- 2010–2024: im District of Huntingdonshire die Wards Alconbury & The Stukeleys, Brampton, Buckden, Fenstanton, Godmanchester, Gransden & The Offords, Huntingdon East, Huntingdon North, Huntingdon West, Kimbolton & Staughton, Little Paxton, St Ives East, St Ives South, St Ives West, St Neots Eaton Ford, St Neots Eaton Socon, St Neots Eynesbury, St Neots Priory Park und The Hemingfords[5]
