Wahlkreis Hitchin

Hitchin ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in den Grafschaften Bedfordshire und Hertfordshire im Osten Englands, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Nachdem er bereits von 1885 bis 1983 existiert hatte, besteht er wieder seit 2024 in der Unitary Authority Central Bedfordshire und im Bezirk North Hertfordshire. Bedeutende Orte im Wahlkreis sind Arlesey, Hitchin, Shefford und Stotfold.

Geschichte
Der Wahlkreis entstand bei der Umsetzung des Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 durch die Teilung des Dreierwahlkreises Hertfordshire in vier Einerwahlkreise. Erste Anpassungen erfolgten mit dem Representation of the People Act 1918. Die Boundary Commission for England nahm 1945, 1950, 1955 und 1974 im Rahmen periodischer Überprüfungen verschiedene Änderungen des Grenzverlaufs vor. 1983 löste sie den Wahlkreis Hitchin auf und verteilte sein Gebiet auf die neuen Wahlkreise North Hertfordshire und Stevenage. 2024 schuf die Boundary Commission den Wahlkreis Hitchin neu, zusammengesetzt aus Teilen des aufgelösten Wahlkreises Hitchin and Harpenden und des weiterhin bestehenden Wahlkreises Mid Bedfordshire.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1885–1918: die sessional divisions Aldbury (ohne die Parishes Great Hadham und Little Hadham), Buntingford, Hitchin, Odsey, Stevenage und Welwyn sowie den Parish Braughing[2]
- 1918–1945: die Urban Districts Baldock, Hitchin, Royston und Stevenage, die Rural Districts Ashwell, Buntingford, Hitchin und Welwyn sowie im Rural District Hertford die Parishes Aston, Bennington, Datchworth, Sacombe, Walkern und Watton-at-Stone[2]
- 1945–1950: die Urban Districts Baldock, Hitchin, Letchworth, Royston und Stevenage, die Rural Districts Hitchin und Welwyn sowie Teile der Rural Districts Braughing und Hertford[2]
- 1950–1955: die Urban Districts Baldock, Hitchin, Letchworth, Royston und Stevenage, den Rural District Hitchin, im Rural District Braughing die Parishes Anstey, Ardeley, Aspenden, Broadfield, Buckland, Buntingford, Cottered, Hormead, Meesden, Throcking, Westmilll und Wyddial sowie im Rural District Hertford die Parishes Aston, Bennington, Datchworth, Sacombe, Walkern und Watton-at-Stone[2]
- 1955–1974: die Urban Districts Baldock, Hitchin, Letchworth, Royston und Stevenage sowie den Rural District Hitchin[3]
- 1974–1983: die Urban Districts Baldock, Hitchin, Letchworth und Royston sowie den Rural District Hitchin[4]
- seit 2024: in der Unitary Authority Central Bedfordshire die Wards Arlesey & Fairfield, Clifton, Henlow & Langfield, Meppershall & Shillington (teilweise), Shefford und Stotfold sowie im North Hertfordshire District die Wards Cadwell, Codicote & Kimpton (teilweise), Graveley, St Ippolyts & Wymondley, Great Ashby, Hitchin Bearton, Hitchin Highbury, Hitchin Oughton, Hitchin Priory, Hitchin Walsworth, Hitchwood und Offa[5]
Sechs Jahrzehnte lang galt der Wahlkreis Hitchin zunächst als Hochburg der Conservative Party, deren Kandidaten mit Ausnahme eines Wahlsiegs der Liberal Party im Jahr 1906 sich hier stets durchsetzen konnten. 1945 gelang es erstmals einem Kandidaten der Labour Party, zum Abgeordneten gewählt zu werden. Nachdem Peter Benenson 1951, 1955 und 1959 erfolglos für die Labour Party angetreten war, gehörte er 1961 zu den Mitbegründern von Amnesty International. Von 1964 bis 1974 hatte Labour den Sitz ebenfalls inne. Nach der Wiederherstellung des Wahlkreises 2024 setzte sich der Labour-Kandidat Alistair Strathern durch.
