Jenny Barron and Ray Barron, both elected as Conservatives, left the party in March 2022 to sit as independents. This caused the Conservatives to lose their majority, placing the council under no overall control.^[2]

In March 2023, in the run-up to the next election, eight of the nine independent councillors formally registered themselves as a political party called the Stafford Borough Independents.^[3][4]
