The Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development (SMIT, French: Société marocaine d’ingénierie touristique, Arabic: الشركة المغربية للهندسة السياحية) is a Moroccan public institution responsible for implementing the country's tourism development strategy. It is involved in the design, planning and support of investment projects in the tourism sector.
Placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, SMIT acts as a technical operator for the development of tourism supply, in coordination with public authorities and private stakeholders.
The Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development was established in 2007 as part of the implementation of Morocco's “Vision 2010”, and later aligned with the objectives of “Vision 2020”, which aimed to structure the tourism sector and strengthen its attractiveness.[1]
In the following years, SMIT participated in the implementation of various tourism development programmes, particularly in the planning of tourist zones and the diversification of tourism offerings.[2]
Its missions evolved over time in line with public policy priorities, including increasing attention to sustainability and territorial development.[3]
Missions
SMIT's main missions include:[4][5][6]
- designing and structuring tourism projects;
- identifying and mobilising land for tourism purposes;
- supporting domestic and foreign investors;
- promoting investment in the tourism sector;
- developing new tourism segments, including sustainable, cultural and rural tourism;
- implementing national tourism development strategies.
Activities
SMIT operates at different stages of tourism development, from feasibility studies to project implementation.
Its activities include:[7][8][9]
- conducting market studies and tourism planning;
- structuring integrated tourism zones;
- developing projects in partnership with public and private actors;
- monitoring the implementation of investment projects.
It also contributes to the diversification of tourism supply by supporting projects related to ecotourism, mountain tourism and cultural tourism.[9]
