Talk:Harriet Mellon

Spelling

I am changing the title of the page to correct the spelling of "harriet". The correct name is referenced on page 280 of Old and New London illustrated by Edward Walford, and in http://www.thepeerage.com/p1169.htm— Preceding unsigned comment added by Although (talk • contribs) 14:12, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

The Google Ngram shows that sources are most definitely mixed; I'm not sure how to declare either spelling to be correct. You can find both spellings in widespread use over time using Google books searches. – wbm1058 (talk) 14:36, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Page name?

Shouldn't this page name be "Harriet Beauclerk, Duchess of St Albans" instead? If so, can it be moved? GrandDukeMarcelo (talk) 22:27, 1 August 2025 (UTC)

@GrandDukeMarcelo: Looking at other similar articles in Category:English duchesses by marriage, it looks like current practice is yes, it probably should be renamed, but it is also inconsistent and there are other articles that do not include the honorific. The main guideline dealing with articles titles of royalty doesn’t really say anything about it. I would suggest starting a requested move so other editors can weigh in and see what the consensus says. cyberdog958Talk 00:19, 2 August 2025 (UTC)

Harriet Mellon → Harriet Beauclerk, Duchess of St Albans – The subject is more commonly known in historical and scholarly sources as Harriet Beauclerk, Duchess of St Albans following her marriage to the Duke. Her title as Duchess is significant and widely used. The current name, Harriet Mellon, refers only to her maiden name and is less recognisable post-marriage. This move would bring the article in line with naming conventions for British peeresses. • Strong oppose. Evidence strongly shows that Harriet Mellon is the common name, e.g. ngrams. DrKay (talk) 18:56, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
Infobox reflects the title (otherwise why not use another one). It would be in line with other Duchesses pages. She was married, and therefore used Beauclerk as married name, and used the title until her death. GrandDukeMarcelo (talk) 13:17, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
