Widespread views

Note: I know there's Talk:GOAT (sports culture) § Suitable for inclusion on list on the other page, but this seems more appropriate to start here. Since this list was split here, maybe that discussion should be moved here.—Bagumba (talk) 12:04, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

The entries here should be limited to widespread views, not one-off opinions. The WP:SUBJECTIVE policy says:

More generally, it is sometimes permissible to note a subject's reputation when that reputation is widespread and potentially informative or of interest to readers.

The WP:FRINGE guideline reads:

Because Wikipedia aims to summarize significant opinions with representation in proportion to their prominence, a Wikipedia article should not make a fringe theory appear more notable or more widely accepted than it is.

The WP:EXCEPTIONAL policy warns against:

Surprising or apparently important claims not covered by multiple mainstream sources

Very much agree. I've been trying to find some time to start a discussion about this, but I think a model should be something like List of video games considered the best, which includes games only once listed on 6+ best-of articles/lists. Kelly Slater being the second name listed, based on a 200 word excerpt from a surfing magazine, is suggestive of the issues here. @Soulbust, I know you've put a lot of work into this, but I hope you can understand that a list of this type will need to have multiple editors agreeing on the standards for inclusion in order for it to be manageable to keep up with. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:47, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
List of films voted the best is another reference point, having survived multiple AfDs (e.g. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of films considered the best (4th nomination)). On the other hand, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of ice hockey players considered the greatest of all time and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of association football players considered the greatest of all time ended in deletion. —Bagumba (talk) 04:01, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
@Alyo Your point about the list needing multiple editors agreeing on standards for inclusion is definitely fair and I agree with it. For the video games list, I don't know if anyone's brought it up (I'll have to dig in to discussions on its talk page later perhaps), but specifically six best-of articles seems a bit arbitrary. Unsure if it's apples-to-apples as of right now, since that vg list's criteria covers games that are on best-of lists (including games that would be routinely ranked anywhere but #1, at least from my understanding); I was aiming to narrow this list's entries to athletes who have only been ranked as the greatest.
Definitely open to tweaking that however, though I think maybe a mix of both thoughts would be best? As in, listing only athletes that have been called the greatest (either cross-sports, or in their particular sport/field), but ensure that there are multiple sources calling them as such (I think 3 would probably be considered the bare minimum).
Still am quite busy offline atm, but I'll check in on this discussion again soonish. Soulbust (talk) 12:40, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
@Soulbust, sure, the six articles standard is just an example of a compilation-type list article setting a higher standard than just "X has been called Y at least one time by Z". I don't advocate for that exact numerical standard or for inclusion just because someone was ranked #6 in a goat list, just for something similar. To start, I do think that this article should focus on inclusion based on sources specifically doing all-time analysis, or lists, or "goat" discourse. To use the example I mentioned above, I don't think that Kelly Slater should be the second name listed in this article: the only source is a profile in a surfing magazine that uses "greatest sportsman of all time" as a minor framing device, rather than as serious analysis claiming him to be the greatest sports figure in all of sports, which is how he is presented in this list. Compare that to the name right above, Simone Biles, where the source is making a very direct goat comparison between Biles and other athletes, and explicitly says "Biles is the best to ever do it and it’s not even close. In her sport. And in all others." Regardless of how many sources we think should be required in order for addition--I agree that ~3 is a good baseline--we should be looking for the sources like the Biles one much more than the Surfer piece. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:09, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
@Alyo: Gotcha, I'll sift through the sourcing and entries to narrow it based on your note here, particularly the bit where you say "To start, I do think that this article should focus on inclusion based on sources specifically doing all-time analysis, or lists, or "goat" discourse."
I was also wondering if you think the ~3 baseline should also apply to the more sport-specific or position-specific entries. I personally think if we're setting cross-sports at ~3 sources, then position-specific should be ~2 (I'm thinking that it needs to be more than 1 to help alleviate any potential WP:FRINGE concerns where 1 individual is throwing out an unorthodox take, but because of how specific/niche positions can be, I don't know if the amount of sourcing should be as many as cross-sport takes). Perhaps 3/4+ is good for cross-sports, 2/3+ is good for sport-specific GOATs, and 2+ is a good baseline for position-specific entries? (This is a rough starting point, and obviously would defer to any sort of future consensus formed through this discussion).
Also on that note, how would you (or how should we) evaluate a source like ESPN's 50-expert panel regarding every NFL position GOAT? Would Joe Montana receiving 4/50 votes count as 4 toward his entry as greatest QB, or does this source in its entirety count as only 1 for Tom Brady (44/50 of the panel's votes); and therefore, presumably 0 for Montana? If its the latter, then what do we do in cases like Mike Webster's: he received 15/50 votes for best center (more than any other candidate listed by the panel) - so does that count as 15 (15 unique voters); 1 (he received the most votes, nobody tied with him for that); or 0 (due to not surpassing a 50%+ threshold of votes)? For this issue, I think it should count as 15, but regardless I do believe a good place to start my aforementioned sift would be removing any player receiving only 1 panel vote from this list. Soulbust (talk) 00:19, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
Doing a quick scan of the current revision, I would be in favor of completely removing the entries and refs at notes 2, 9, 13, and all of the horses except Secretariat and Man o' War. I do agree that the -by position section is iffy. The more we narrow "greatest of all time" the less meaning it has--what is the value of GOAT when it's only one position in one sport? I think we should stay away from using "Greatest team of all time" articles to then say that all players named deserve recognition at their position. So that's the American football and rugby union sections, specifically. I'm just not sure that "all time team" is the same as "GOAT by position". That feels a little like SYNTH. For the NFL panel, I don't think we need to create any sort of weight matrix, but maybe we only use that as a source for the top 1-2 vote getters, if included at all.
Another way to think about this is that any people included on this list should also be well-regarded enough that their own article describes them as being at the top of their sport, or sports as a whole. By and large this is true, but that's another thing to check--if John Francome's article doesn't say anything about his legacy, we should really require strong sourcing to include him here (and then said sourcing should probably be added to his own article). @Bagumba@Alyo, I was wondering if all sources citing a specific athlete or analyst calling another athlete the "greatest of all time" should be removed from all notes in this article. Are you aware of any specific sites cited in this article that may not be reliable and/or deprecated? I’d like to try and clean this all up and get the tag removed.
Also, curious your thoughts on a minimum reference count for each note in order for an athlete to be included in this article. It seems @Soulbust touched on it already in an earlier message, but wanted to pin a specific number down. IMO, it should be at least three references for position specific entries, and at least four references for sport specific and all sports "GOATs". I’d appreciate any input you can provide, thanks. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 22:18, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
In line with WP:SUBJECTIVE, I believe sources should be limited to those where the author makes an assessment that it's a widely-held opinion, and not just their own personal view. —Bagumba (talk) 22:24, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
Oh wow so I totally screwed up this article. What about sources that specifically rank the greatest of all time? Is that ok? Any thoughts on reference minimums? GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 22:34, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
Outside of the one listed at No. 1, the rest of the entries in a ranking are "one of the greatest". But this page is titled the greatest. The more sources the merrier, but three is a reasonable cutoff. —Bagumba (talk) 23:18, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
Or are you saying that only sources that specifically state "(he/she) are widely considered the greatest of all time" can be included? GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 22:53, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
This one. —Bagumba (talk) 23:14, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, I’ll begin deleting all the no good references shortly. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 23:29, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
@Haddad Maia fan any thoughts on minimum reference requirement for an athlete to be listed here? Three+ across the board? Four+? Three+ for positionals and 4+ for all others… lmk. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 23:31, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
So far guidelines should be: Minimum of three references per note for an athlete to be included article wide. Then making sure self-published blog posts and sources referencing a specific athlete/commentator/analyst/coach saying an athlete is the greatest of all time aren’t included.
Correct me if I’m wrong or you disagree. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 05:55, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
Should polls be included? --Hipal (talk) 20:11, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
I think they should, but not the ones that were made with votes by the public, because they can be easily influenced or manipulated Haddad Maia fan (talk) 20:26, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
I think both expert and fan polls should be included. Although I agree that there could be some level of manipulation, most of these fan polls consist of real votes from thousands if not tens of thousands of people which should still make the #1 ranked athlete in the poll "widely considered the greatest" and eligible for inclusion in this article. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 21:08, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
There's nothing wrong with athletes/commentators/analysts/coaches saying a player is the greatest. it makes no sense why sources with those should be excluded DiamondIIIXX (talk) 22:47, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
BLP, RS, and POV all indicate otherwise. --Hipal (talk) 00:18, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
If the quote is in a reliable source, then the view of someone involved in the sport should be given, dare I say, more weight than a journalist that decided to just make a list. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 01:40, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
