@Sergecross73 @Red Phoenix What is a Sega million seller? It's an important piece of discussion because it is right at the start of the article. I can understand, Sonic, Sakura Wars, Virtua Fighter, Yakuza, Total War, Persona and Shin Megami Tensei being added, but The House of the Dead, Phantasy Star and Super Monkey Ball get questionable.
The 2021 Annual Report listing the numbers:
(Page 35)
We have Sonic, Puyo, Sakura Wars, Virtua Fighter, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, Football Manager, Total War, Hatsune Miku accounted for. Phantasy Star series gets tough because it just describes online IDs of PS02. Chain Chronicle also has many downloads but no user IDs. What do we count?
Two other franchise sales I can find: Super Monkey Ball selling 5 million. And Virtua Tennnis selling 5 million to.
Then individual games like Crazy Taxi, Valkyria Chronicles 1&4 also crossed over 1 million sales. Link for 1. Link for 4Shenmue, Love & Barry also selling 1 million copies, but not franchise multi million sellers.
EDIT: The mostly Japan only Saka Tsuku series franchise (a Japanese Football Manager), sold over 3 million copies too.
What should we do? Dop55 (talk) 07:50, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- I didn't write that bit, but my two cents is that it should be reworked. It feels like it's too much namedropping right off the bat, without much value or context. To me, it doesn't really feel like Total War is one of their iconic franchises. And while Angry Birds is a huge franchise, listing it off here lack context that most of its success happened before Sega even touched it... Sergecross73 msg me 12:12, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- If it's iconic to Sega or not, is not that relevant in my opinion. However regarding that and Angry Birds, a point should be made that a certain set of franchises were made Sega, and some were acquired by them. Which ones to use is the question. House of the Dead needs to be removed because there is zero proof that any of them sold a million copies. Dop55 (talk) 16:19, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- My point is that the whole premise - listing every franchise that has sold 2+ million copies - should be scrapped and done differently. It's already too long, and it would probably at least double in size if someone was suggesting listing them all. 2+ million combines franchise sales is simply not that big of an accomplishment for a dev/pub the size of Sega. - yeah 10+ million copies should be where it get's relevant. I still insist Phantasy Star should be listed to because PSO2 made a billion yen, even if no single game sold a million copies as far as we know. Dop55 (talk) 16:48, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
