1878 Connecticut lieutenant gubernatorial election

On election day, November 5, 1878, Republican nominee David Gallup won a plurality of the vote by a margin of 4,161 votes against his foremost opponent Democratic nominee Charles Durand. However, as no candidate received a majority of the vote, the election was forwarded to the Connecticut General Assembly, who elected David Gallup, thereby gaining Republican control over the office of lieutenant governor. Gallup was sworn in as the 59th lieutenant governor of Connecticut on January 9, 1879.^[1]
