John 1:7 is the seventh verse in the first chapter of the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Christian Bible.
In the original Greek according to Westcott-Hort this verse is:
- Οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν, ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσι δι᾿ αὐτοῦ.[1]
In the King James Version of the Bible, the text reads:
- The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.[2]
The New International Version translates the passage as:
- He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.[3]
Analysis
According to Robert Witham, "That all might believe through him" is John's preaching, who was the instrument of God to induce them to believe in Christ, their Redeemer.[4] According to Irish Archbishop John McEvilly, "the light" refers to the person of Christ.[5] The manner in which John came as a witness is elaborated on in verses 19-34.[6]
