The result of the move request was: moved. WP:SNOW; @Coleisforeditor summarizes consensus quite well near the end of this section. A format of "[year] Iranian supreme leadership election" was also proposed late in this discussion, but it does not appear to have gained much traction, and an argument against it was made. – Per MOS:JOBTITLE. Since Supreme Leader is modified by Iranian, it should be decapitalized. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 15:08, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

  • it aint a big deal, regardless the current form is more formal Szekere07 (talk) 16:33, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose - everywhere I've seen "Supreme Leader" it's been capitalized Red Slash 17:41, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
The first sentence of the article disagrees with you. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 17:55, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Support per above reasons TheLoyalOrder (talk) 22:01, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Support Per MOS:JOBTITLE, the unusual nature of this particular job title does not justify capitalisation: The formality (officialness), specificity, or unusualness of a title is not a reason to capitalize it. Boud (talk) 22:46, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

Neutral It's not that big of a deal, yes it is not "correct", but we don't need to change it. It's fine. CtrlAltSpace (he/him) 03:48, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
I'm not convinced by the argument that this doesn't matter. Capitalization has meaning, and capitalizing the title of a religious leader even more so. Renerpho (talk) 15:31, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Well, if you say that the capitalizing of a religious leader is important, thenn all cap is better, which means that he is very important. CtrlAltSpace (he/him) 04:57, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
That's not at all what I'm saying. We should avoid (selectively) capitalizing religious titles. Renerpho (talk) 14:36, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

Support per MOS:JOBTITLE. Quite frankly, I'd prefer 1989 Iranian supreme leadership election and 2026 Iranian supreme leadership election (or even just "leadership election") for further constituency with similar articles (eg. 2024 Iranian presidential election, etc.). estar8806 (talk) 15:25, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
"presidential election" vs. "president election" is a balancing act between Naturalness and Concision in WP:CRITERIA. "presidential" gives a huge bump in Naturalness for very little loss of Concision. The same cannot be said for "supreme leadership election" vs. "supreme leader election" where we arguably lose Naturalness and gain very little Precision as "supreme leader election" is just as precise and perhaps even more natural. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 21:10, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

Support per MOS:JOBTITLE. I quote: "The formality (officialness), specificity, or unusualness of a title is not a reason to capitalize it." If we wanted to keep it capitalized, it should be "[year] Election of Supreme Leader of Iran" or something similar. CoolDino1 (talk) 20:39, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

Comment: The change is so minor, I do not really think it should happen. "The one and only" | Wikiediter2029—Click me to talk! (talk) 21:56, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

If the change is really that minor, you shouldn't have wasted your time writing a comment. It costs nothing to change the title, so I don't see what you are on about. OnTheSEC (talk) 15:32, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
Support Capitalization is for when its used as a title. In this case, its the adjective for an election. Compare 2020 United States presidential election, etc. Common name doesnt apply here. ← Metallurgist (talk) 23:27, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

Under Backgroud/Plans, in the second sentence change "outlet" to "outlets" to fix grammatical error. PeterNRYates (talk) 23:11, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

Done also fixed same issue that was present in the lead.―Maltazarian (talkinvestigate) 23:30, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

Candidates

Which other were official candidates not suspected ones, would be good to know. MarketFruit (talk) 20:09, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

Results

@Jasper Chu: Hi. I have noticed your changes in the Infobox, which may beg some questions for editors and general readers -

  • There are contradicting reports on the election results, ranging from a unanimous vote (from the state media) to the New York Times article you have first cited and the Iran International's you have now instead emphasized on. Having this considered, it seems it would be the best not to pinpoint the vote results in the Infobox.
  • This also begs the question about the political alignment of the second candidate, whether he is a principalist, a reformist, or a moderate, and the broader question on whether he should be highlighted in the Infobox, when there is no obvious indication by the media.
  • Thirdly, could we ascertain that there are 59 members voting in the election, when Iran International which this claim relied on is only capable of giving an estimated figure?
  • Also, is Mojtaba Khamenei a member of the Combatant Clergy Association? While there are media reports that show Khamenei is a hardliner or principalist, there seem to lack recent reports on his affiliation with the association. After all, you have indicated that Mojtaba Khamenei is an "independent" in the infobox.
