Date of "Garry Larson Cartoon Incident"

I noticed that the date of "Garry Larson Cartoon Incident" is missing. I would assume it happened sometime from 1979 to 1995 when the comic strip ran but someone should clarify. KarateNerd0321 (talk) 14:27, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Jane Goodall's passing

Hello,

I don't think I have an account to edit on Wikipedia, but the Jane Goodall Institute just posted about her passing today (10/1/2025).

make an account, its easy! shane (talk to me if you want!) 18:22, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
I can see it getting covered by several Reliable Sources now. I was going to update it but I see that it has already been done. DanielRigal (talk) 18:26, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
How curious that she passed on World Vegetarian Day in 2025, while on a speaking tour. Petuewy (talk) 16:34, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Death date and location

Her official Instagram page posted an updated. Leaving this here since I feel weird using an Insta post as a source (not reliable/recommended). Perhaps the NYT will update their obit soon. "With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91, who died of natural causes in Los Angeles, CA while on her speaking tour in the United States." NYT obit also confirms she died today. TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 19:10, 1 October 2025 (UTC)

Infobox image

Now that Dame Jane Goodall has passed away, much like with other people, the infobox image should ideally be changed to an older one. But since we don't have anything older than 2006 (where she's already an old lady), should we change it? What are your proposals? Nurken (talk) 21:30, 1 October 2025 (UTC)

No, please don't change it. The current image is good. Just because we go through this silliness on other articles doesn't mean we should repeat it here. Cremastra (talk · contribs) 21:59, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
I see no reason to prevent a discussion on the matter, but it's also true that we don't have to rush in a discussion so soon after her death. ―Howard🌽33 22:17, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
It's already been changed everywhere without any consensus and I'm mad that I didn't put a note in time. Nurken (talk) 00:30, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
Until we find a good image of Goodall when she was younger, I think we should keep this image in the meantime. I’m not sure if there’s a good image of her in her younger years, as opposed to many other deceased individuals, as her earliest image that Commons has is from 2006. GuyMan529 (talk) 19:20, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
I agree that the photo should be changed to an earlier picture if we obtain one in the commons, I personally think we should use a photo of her from a younger age. 198.7.201.75 (talk) 19:37, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
I’m aware that there’s no image of her in a younger age that has an appropriate licence, though. GuyMan529 (talk) 19:42, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
There's a 1973 press photo listed on eBay which might be in the public domain if we can find evidence it was published in the US without copyright notice. ―Howard🌽33 19:59, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
That's really low quality and black and white. Cremastra (talk · contribs) 20:59, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
Eh. Quality’s too poor. I strongly recommend using a high quality image instead. GuyMan529 (talk) 21:07, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
By "this image", you mean the current 2010 one or my 2022 one? Nurken (talk) 20:53, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
The current professional high-quality photo looks more flattering than either of the two proposed alternatives. No need to change. 173.206.37.177 (talk) 21:22, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Younger-aged photo

The article could use a photo of her at a younger age when she became famous. Maybe someday her foundation, family, or a friend could donate one to Wikimedia Commons (Category:Jane Goodall by year) or maybe there's an old publicity photo. The only youthful photo I can find on Commons is the poster for the documentary Jane (2017) and that's small. 5Q5| 11:59, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

She remained famous (and active) right through to her death. A mature aged pic is not out of place. HiLo48 (talk) 07:42, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
There’s no image of her when she was younger that is in the public domain. (What I know of, at least). The earliest inages we have are from 2006. GuyMan529 (talk) 18:48, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

Infobox Image (2)

The current version of the image (A) in the infobox clearly shows Goodall, but she was perhaps too close to the camera, and the photo only includes her head.

I would suggest using Jane Goodall visits United States Mission Uganda on 4 April 2022 - 5 (cropped).jpg (B) or Jane-goodall_(cropped).jpg (C), while the former is a speech of hers (with Mr. H), and the latter is a pure portrait of her. ZhaoFJx(Talk) 03:14, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

The current headshot photo (A) looks peculiar to me in that immediate areas of her face and head are out of focus. Are we sure it isn't an AI-generated image? I think (B) and (C) look more natural and in focus, with (B) being more representative of her career. 5Q5| 14:03, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
A looks too cropped, and honestly, kind of weird. B might be too recent and looks slightly too blurry. I think C may be the best one we are thinking of. GuyMan529 (talk) 17:49, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
There is also this crop of (A).
@5Q5: Depth of field is intentionally used in professional macrophotography to defocus the background, and is something AI doesn't do.
@GuyMan529:It can be made less weird by re-cropping from File:Jane Goodall 2010.jpg, which I would prefer over B and C. 173.206.37.177 (talk) 18:15, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
This version still looks just as weird. A doesn’t seem to have a version that is taken further away (see the original version), that is similarly to the other two proposals. I’d prefer an image where it uses their body, not where it merely highlights their head. GuyMan529 (talk) 18:44, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
Hmm, now I see the missing body. I don't like (B) and (C) because the contrast of her wrinkles is too high. How about these?
(D)
(E)
173.206.37.177 (talk) 19:12, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
Yeah. D looks good. GuyMan529 (talk) 21:29, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
D is great! Nurken (talk) 02:02, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
Pinging User:Floating Orb 173.206.134.138 (talk) 06:43, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
I guess D is the best if we can't find a better newer picture. Floating Orb Talk! my edits 15:08, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
In the two sections above, other people specifically wanted an older picture. 173.206.134.138 (talk) 20:23, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
We don't have any. Cremastra (talk · contribs) 21:24, 9 October 2025 (UTC)

Change from:

"After the released, Goodall blamed her "chaotic note taking" for the plagiarism accusations and revised the book after the allegations."

to:

"After the release, Goodall blamed her "chaotic note taking" for the plagiarism accusations and revised the book after the allegations."

i.e. remove the stray "d".

Having said that, the section as a whole seems to imply an unlikely duplicated sequence of events, and would need considerable revision (as, ironically, did the book).

Nymphia Wind impersonation

For consideration as an update to Jane_Goodall#Television, drag performer Nymphia Wind impersonated Goodall for the Snatch Game challenge on the sixteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race:

A recap of Nymphia's reign during the season 17 finale featured a FaceTime clip with Goodall:

--Another Believer (Talk) 01:35, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

That fact is really about Nymphia Wind, not Goodall. HiLo48 (talk) 02:19, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
@HiLo48 Sorry, maybe the headings have changed but this was intended for Popular culture: Jane_Goodall#In_popular_culture. I don't feel strongly about inclusion, I'll let others decide if this is relevant. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:24, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Education subsection and "Prince Harry"

Hi, I do not see any subsection on Goodall's post-secondary education, i.e. institutions attended and degrees obtained, etc. In addition, I thought Harry lost all of his titles, i.e. Prince, etc. SurgeArrest (talk) 11:40, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Her first afterschool qualification was some sort of secretarial course. The next was a PhD at Cambridge. Not bad career progression. Greglocock (talk) 06:53, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

education

Goodall did not earn a BA at Newnham, as the sidebar says she did. She earned a PhD from Newnham in 1966, without any prior undergraduate work or degree. Her connection with Darwin was as an Honorary Fellow. She was not a student at the college, postgraduate or otherwise 38.123.91.34 (talk) 14:31, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

The article has copyright violations, mostly a single source: https://greekcitytimes.com/2023/04/03/jane-goodall-greek-gift-birthday/

  • Our article: When she was a child, Goodall's father gave her a stuffed toy chimpanzee named Jubilee as an alternative to a teddy bear. Goodall had said her fondness for it sparked her early love of animals, commenting, "My mother's friends were horrified by this toy, thinking it would frighten me and give me nightmares." Jubilee still sits on Goodall's dresser in London.

  • Our article: Goodall credits the 1986 Understanding Chimpanzees conference, hosted by the Chicago Academy of Sciences, with shifting her focus from observation of chimpanzees to a broader and more intense concern with animal-human conservation. She is the former president of Advocates for Animals, an organisation based in Edinburgh, Scotland, that campaigns against the use of animals in medical research, zoos, farming and sport.

  • Our article: Goodall was an outspoken environmental advocate, speaking on the effects of climate change on endangered species such as chimpanzees. Goodall, alongside her foundation, collaborated with NASA to use satellite imagery from the Landsat series to remedy the effects of deforestation on chimpanzees and local communities in Western Africa by offering the villagers information on how to reduce activity and preserve their environment.

I have paraphrased the first paragraph listed above. It may need further copyediting, but hopefully it is enough avert any copyright violation. I may get to re-wording the other two cited paragraphs sometime later, if someone else doesn't beat me to it. A. Randomdude0000 (talk) 16:23, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
@GreenC and A. Randomdude0000: No. On 3 April 2023, the other website copied Wikipedia. See our version on 2 March 2023. 173.206.37.177 (talk) 17:03, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
Oh wow good find. I didn't search for a culprit, but that was the right thing to have done, didn't consider the possibility of a backwards copy. Also thanks for adding {{Backwards copy}} @ Special:Diff/1314667123/1314669765. The site is in legal violation, they do not include attribution or a share-alike license (CC-BY-SA). Yes, good find indeed. Thank you for bringing this to attention. Based on this info, I have reverted my aforementioned copyedits. A. Randomdude0000 (talk) 20:21, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
Resolved: It was an instance of WP:BACKWARDSCOPY; that is, another website copying Wikipedia's content. 5Q5| 13:46, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

Mary Leakey is a she, not a he

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

in the third paragraph of "Africa" section, it is mentioned that "Leakey arranged funding, and in 1962 he sent Goodall, who had no degree, to the University of Cambridge." I believe Leakey here refers to Mary Leakey? Therefore, Mary's pronoun is "she" (I might be wrong, but can't ask the dead about their pronouns). However, the sentence says "he sent Goodall...." please fix? Ovidading (talk) 23:19, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Leakey raised the funding for Jane to go to Cambridge. Hence 'he'. Greglocock (talk) 06:51, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
I assume you mean a different Leakey. Please clarify. HiLo48 (talk) 07:44, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
No, it refers to Louis Leakey who was her mentor and was a man... Polinova (talk) 15:42, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
Then the article should clarify that. HiLo48 (talk) 23:54, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
Do you have a suggestion on what to change? It looks like that entire section is about Louis Leakey sending her to various places. Polinova (talk) 00:46, 4 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi everyone, I need to copy and paste the citations from the English version into the Farsi version. Could you please grant me access to the "Edit Sources" section of the Jane Goodall page? Thank you! Saeed Salamian (talk) 07:22, 5 October 2025 (UTC)

Not done: All you have to do is click 'View source', which also allows you to copy and paste the source code of the reference. Theeverywhereperson (talk here) 07:53, 5 October 2025 (UTC)
Yes, but it's really hard and time-consuming or maybe I just don't know how to do it easily. Saeed Salamian (talk) 13:42, 5 October 2025 (UTC)

Another pop culture reference to Jane Goodall was in What's New Scooby Doo, season 1, episode 8: "Safari, So Goodi!" Which aired originally in November 23, 2002 in the U.S.A. In that episode Mystery Inc are aided by famous and well respected Zoologist "Joan Goodfew" whilst investigating missing animal populations in Malawi. It is the only episode she appears in. Joan Goodfew was voiced by Jennifer Hale. Morganism2000 (talk) 11:25, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
