2026 marked the 23rd time April Fools' Day was celebrated on Wikipedia, which was also a special year due to Wikipedia's 25th birthday. This year, a truly massive number of pranks were made. Wikipedians who participated in the festivities held an informal vote from April 2-4, 2026 to select the best of the year. The winners are as follows:

  • The "Chicken Dinner" Award (best AfD): 17776 (3 votes)
  • The "Tom-Fool" Award (best prankster): AlphaBeta135 (6 votes)
  • The "Out of the Box" Award (best non-XfD prank): Wikipedia Tower (6 votes)
  • The "Citation Needed" Award (best Wikipedia-related AfD): Edit conflict (8 votes)
  • The "Hot Off the Presses" Award (best current events-related prank): Epstein files (11 votes)
  • The "DeLorean" Award (best history-related prank): Nineteen Eighty-Four (10 votes)
  • The "Van Gogh Protégé" Award (best use of CSS): Liquid Glass (10 votes)
  • The "Still Kicking" Award (best recurring nomination): Main Page (7th nomination) (4 votes)

Editors made a record setting 260 joke AFD nominations. Contributing to this record setting year were multiple AfD "Operations" including:

Wikipedians searched for and located a dozen pranks and other humorous edits which were made on April Fools' Day 2001–2003. A census on the Wikipedians who participated in April Fools' Day 2026 was also held, the results of which can be viewed here.

Stop Glazing Enceladus

Idk how Enceladus gets so much attention, it's one of the most overrated moon in the solar system! I don't think it can support life even after the Sun turns into a red giant. It's literally too small and its gravity is too low bro. It can't even hold an atmosphere. I think any moons under 0.1% of Earth's mass are physically impossible to support life lol, also it has an insanely high geometric albedo, once it's in the Habitable zone it would just reflect almost all the sunlight, making it still cold. Yet some people just keep glazing it. The moon I hate the most is definitely Enceladus

Uni is the worst trans-Neptunian object in the solar system, it has a density of 0.82±0.11 g/cm³[1] that's like not even denser than water ice,[2] this density makes me want to rage so hard, there's no way Uni is able to be a dwarf planet! Imagine being 659 km[3] and have a density lower than water ice.

Pluto Harbors Cats

A recent study showed that Pluto is actually a home for several types of felid organisms on its surface. They have been found to be the source of the majority of vandals indeffed in 15 minutes. ESA are working to find and indef the Pluto-cat IP range, but are runding into funding issues.

Trans-Neptunian object Leleakuhonua

The Goblin is just as annoying as Uni, this TNO is famous just for its orbit and nickname! I've seen SO MANY people saying that it's a dwarf planet and how bro? It's diameter is literally 220 km, yes 220 KM,[4] how do you expect a TNO half the size of Mimas to be in hydrostatic equilibrium??? Yes I know its orbit is unusual it's a sednoid but that doesn't mean it's in hydrostatic equilibrium! Giving nicknames to TNOs can make it a dwarf planet? What logic even is that? I hate Leleakuhonua

The AFD Awards

Every year since 2021, a poll takes place after April Fools' Day concludes, which allows participants to vote for their favourite AfD nomination. Over time, this poll has evolved to include more winners, such as the favourite non-XFD prank.

Starting this year, this poll will now be known as The AFD Awards.

A "Barnstar" will be given out to each winner.

Participants are invited to make nominations/pranks that may fall under any category. This year, the categories are as follows:

The "Chicken Dinner" Award 👑

This is the main AfD vote, as is had been over the years. Participants will vote for their overall favourite AfD nomination.

To keep things simpler than previous years, eligible nominations will be put in a list from which to vote. There will still be an Other field, so any nomination can be voted for. A list-view is simple for ease of use.

To qualify to be put on the list, one of the following must be met.

1. The AFD has at least 6 contributors before April 2 (ie. one nominator, two repliers, one closer, for example)
2. The AFD is eligible for any other award
  • All eligible misc-category AfDs will be added to the master vote
3 The joke was particularly funny and was arbitrarily chosen to be included

The "Tom-Fool" Award 🤡

Participants will vote for which user should be dubbed 2026's "Tom-Fool." All users are susceptible eligible to be voted for.

The "Out of the Box" Award 📦

Participants will vote for their favourite non-XfD prank. This can be a Sandbox prank, a User prank, or anything else that deviates from the traditional nomination pranks.

The "Citation Needed" Award 📝

Participants will vote for their favourite Wikipedia-related AfD.

Participants will vote for their favourite history-related prank. This award is open to any prank, XfD or otherwise.

The "Van Gogh Protégé" Award 🖌️

Participants will vote for an XfD that uses CSS in a creative way. Art is subjective, so there will be an Other field in the voting form, allowing any XfD to be eligible.

The "Still Kicking" Award 👴

Participants will vote for their favourite recurring nomination.

  • fun fact: Juniperus virginiana (Eastern red juniper) is a common tree in eastern North America. It is an aggressive pioneer in old-fields and pastures in the eastern USA. It is killed readily by fire only where fire is uncommon. Ironically, occasional fire seems to help maintain this forest type by killing hardwoods that would eventually capture the site. Fire disturbance creates conditions where J. virginiana may re-invade as a pioneer species, replacing its competitors. Instead, the correct way to deal with unwanted juniper groves is to let them be undisturbed for long enough for the hardwoods to resettle and outcompete the Eastern red juniper, as it is afraid of the dark and need a teddy bear to hug if growing under the canopy of denser trees.
Conclusion: sometimes, "hug the alien invader" is a better solution than "kill it with fire".
