Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The template for “Anishinaabe Culture” divided into two templates: "Anishinaabe Culture" and "Anishinaabe Politics"

IMO, these are separate topics. For the former I edited the existing template including creating more groups. For the latter I just did a copy and paste onto a new template thus it needs much additional work. --Denise B-K (talk)

Various terms for Native Americans redirect to different places + redundant disambiguation pages (move from WP:AN)

I recently nominated Amerinds at RFD, but Wikipedia seems to have a large amount of inconsistent redirects relating to various names for the indigenous people of the Americans. Amerind is a disambiguation page, while Amerindian is a redirect to Indigenous peoples of the Americas. American Indians is another disambiguation page. Native Americans and Indigenous Americans redirect to Native Americans in the United States. American Aborigines is yet another disambiguation page. There's probably more, but this is all I was able to find in a few minutes. I am unsure where to take these pages for discussion, but I think something should be done about them to fix the various inconsistencies.

I originally posted this at WP:AN, but was told to take it here. I do not fully understand how Wikipedia works yet, and I apologize. ~2025-42329-12 (talk) 13:01, 27 December 2025 (UTC)

I've created a request to merge the redundant disambiguation pages. If the merge succeeds, I think the redirects can be dealt with. ~2025-42329-12 (talk) 13:08, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
I see Talk:American Indians#Merge proposal and Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2025 December 26#Amerinds. The redirect Amerinds used to go to Indigenous peoples of the Americas, which is likely where it should return. These terms aren't completely synonymous and you can read more at Native American name controversy. Amerindian and Amerind came from linguistics and is still used in Guyana, Suriname, and Northern Brazil.
While Wikipedia doesn't like the term American Indian, it is widely used in the real world to describe the Indigenous peoples of the United States who are not Inuit, Yupiit, Unangan/Unangas. There's no Wikipedia article for the concept American Indian (just a disambiguation page), so American Indians and other Alaska Natives are combined in Native Americans in the United States. Yuchitown (talk) 15:54, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
I will note that my understanding is that "Native American" has been popularized by its use by the US Census Bureau as a race/ethnic group designation for Indigenous peoples in the US other than Native Alaskans and Native Hawaiians, and I am not aware of any widespread use outside of the US. Certainly, Canadians seem to prefer "First Nations" for the Indigenous peoples of Canada. I remember some use of "Amerind" and "Amerindian" from more than 50 years ago (in science fiction stories, of all things), but not from more recently. Donald Albury 17:01, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
Just fleshing that out a bit, the US Census uses "American Indian" and "Alaska Native" (there's overlap because some Alaska Natives are American Indians, e.g. Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, etc.) and "Native American" is the term that combines both. Indigenous peoples of Canada includes First Nation, Inuit, and Métis. Amerind and Amerindian are still used in northern South America. Latin America has shifted heavily from indios to pueblos indígenas, so Indigenous peoples of the Americas has been the preferred umbrella term. Yuchitown (talk) 17:26, 28 December 2025 (UTC)

Tlingit#Contemporary nations

Anyone knowledgeable about Tlingits, could you look over a list of contemporary Tlingit nations I added to the Tlingit article and add anyone that I missed? Also, User:Skybristol created several stubs about Alaska Native tribal entities that need help (and Wikipedia coverage of Alaska Native tribes is woefully inadequate so any improvements are good). I fleshed out Craig Tribal Association but Chilkoot Indian Association and Hoonah Indian Association need help. Yuchitown (talk) 19:00, 10 January 2026 (UTC)

Chickasaw Nation elections

This could use some attention from someone knowledgeable in the subject; it has a lot of data but not a lot of prose. If someone can help out with finding sources, I'm happy to help with the writing, but I'm not sure what sources would be the most reliable. SomeoneDreaming (talk) 22:29, 17 January 2026 (UTC)

Question of interest

The question raised at Talk:List of Indian massacres in North America#Should this be moved to “List of Native massacres in North America” may be of interest to members of this project. Donald Albury 19:14, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

Article deletion

Does this unilateral deletion of an article on a clearly notable topic with no discussion or warning raise alarm bells with anyone? YKHC is one of the nonprofits that exist as a companion to the for-profit corporations in each of the 12 ANCSA regions, and given the region in question, certainly one of the most significant. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 02:56, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

It was deleted correctly as purely promotional - I just read it and it was definitely that. It was also created by User:YKHC so being promotional is not a surprise. I can be recreated if you can find enough independent reliable sources to make it clearly WP:NOTABLE Doug Weller talk 09:27, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

Splitting apart Speculative fiction by writers of color page

There is a discussion at Talk:Speculative fiction by writers of color#Implementing the split about how to split this page following the AfD discussion where there was agreement to split apart the page. Please share your thoughts for what sections you believe should be split off/merged to other pages. Thanks and have a great rest of your day. Historyday01 (talk) 13:49, 11 February 2026 (UTC)

Deletion of Native languages

@Magnolia677: is going through and systematically removing Indigenous placenames without any consensus. MOS:FOREIGNEQUIV for lead sentences even includes an Indigneous naming as an example "The Inuit (/ˈɪnjuɪt/, singular Inuk; Inuktitut: ᐃᓄᐃᑦ 'the people') are a group of culturally similar indigenous peoples inhabiting the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada and Alaska ..."

His edits should be monitored so such errors do not continue in the future.  oncamera  (talk page) 22:15, 12 February 2026 (UTC)

This has been going on for quite a while. I asked for a discussion about it recently and the response was overall hostile. I would support an RfC but there is a lot of systemic WP:BIAS. @Poketama has also been working on this over time. PersusjCP (talk) 03:45, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
MOS already sets the standard and even lists an Indigenous naming example. Instead of discussing this, Magnolia677 spent the day complaining to myself and 2 admins, who informed him he should discuss this here. There truly is a strong avoidance to engage with this topic on Wikipedia. In the meantime, the MOS should be followed.  oncamera  (talk page) 03:56, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
@Oncamera Don't track this particular user. Admins may block you for harassment (WP:HOUND), even if you are right about the content.
Pivot 100% to the content. I will start a formal RfC at WikiProject Canada. Poketama (talk) 17:51, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
Is that the best place for the RfC if it's a MOS concern?  oncamera  (talk page) 18:00, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
I think so as it's something of concern for the broader community rather than just the policy editors. I'll crosslink it. Poketama (talk) 18:32, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
This just went to an RfC, see WT:LEAD#RFC: Can Indigenous/native languages be included in the lede of articles about places?, and the nominator ended up withdrawing it. MOS:LEADCLUTTER is pretty clear, and it's the policy (agreed upon by a consensus of editors) I'm following. Not sure why your beef is with me. This is just one of many policies I follow when cleaning up articles. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:35, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for the link that's helpful to review. I have no dispute with you as a user but there is a dispute on policy and its costing everyone time and energy. Hopefully this will clear up any policy concerns whichever conclusion is reached in the Canadian context. Poketama (talk) 18:37, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
The dispute that lead User:Oncamera here were all edits on US articles. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:41, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
I see they have a mix of US and Canadian edits. I think its best to handle one at a time. Poketama (talk) 18:48, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
The policy in question applies across Wikipedia. In fact, the policy mentioned above--MOS:FOREIGNEQUIV--uses Ukraine as an example. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:13, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
Yes, I would prefer a mass RfC, it's not country specific.  oncamera  (talk page) 22:28, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
