Frequently asked questions Controversies, praise, and criticism Q1: Why isn't there a criticisms/controversies section?
A1: Because a section dedicated to criticisms and controversies is no more appropriate than a section dedicated solely to praises and is an indication of a poorly written article. Criticisms/controversies/praises should be worked into the existing prose of the article, per WP:CRIT. Q2: Why isn't a certain controversy/criticism/praise included in this article?
A2: Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View policy says that "All Wikipedia articles and other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view, representing fairly, proportionately, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources. This is non-negotiable and expected of all articles and all editors." Criticism or praise that cannot be reliably sourced cannot be placed in a biography. Also, including everything about MacArthur in a single article would exceed Wikipedia's article size restrictions. A number of sub-articles have been created and some controversies/criticisms/praises have been summarized here or been left out of this article altogether, but are covered in some detail in the sub-articles. Q3: This article needs much more (or much less) criticism/controversy.

Other issues Q4: This article is over 100kb long, WP:SIZE says that it should be broken up into sub-articles. Why hasn't this happened?
A4: The restriction mentioned in WP:SIZE is 100kB of readable prose (which corresponds to about 10,000 words), not the byte count you see when you open the page for editing. As of December 2023, this article had about 19,300 words of readable prose (114 kB according to prosesize tool), which is over the limit. The rest is mainly citations and invisible comments, which do not count towards the limit. Q5: I added something to the article but it got removed. Why?
A5: In all probability what you added was trivia, unsourced information or information cited to an unreliable source; such information is usually removed quickly. Articles on Wikipedia require reliable sources for an independent verification of the facts presented, consequently any information added to an article without a reliable source is subject to removal from the article at any Wikipedian's discretion. Q6: I tried to edit this article but couldn't. Why?

Lead paragraphs
Hello! Has there been any talk of dividing the second paragraph of the lead into two? It's very long, and it looks as if a break could comfortably be made between "...seven times." and "From 1919..." Please let me know your thoughts. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 18:47, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
Semi-protection is unnecessary
I am confused as to why this page is semi-protected. Other WW2 era generals, such as George Patton, Omar Bradley, Bernard Montgomery, Friedrich Paulus, and Georgy Zhukov aren't protected. The only other senior commander from WW2 that has some sort of lock is Erwin Rommel, but it's not as tight as this page. Dwight D. Eisenhower is also semi-protected, but he was President as well so it makes more sense. I know MacArthur is somewhat of a controversial figure but so are several of the other generals mentioned here. I am of the opinion that the other senior WW2 commanders be semi-protected, or the lock on this page be removed. ~2026-19789-05 (talk) 01:10, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
- Unacceptably high levels of vandalism. The article was indefinitely semi-protected in 2011. Protection was lifted in 2019 and within a few weeks the volume of vandalism was so great that indefinite semi-protection was swiftly re-imposed. The article is a featured article and MacArthur has been dead a long time, so there is little requirement for updates. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 01:30, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
Portrayals in Movies.
I think there ought to be a section talking about his several portrayals in media, in my view, it's at least relevant for the sheer amount of acclaimed actors that played him in Film, from Gregory Peck to Laurence Olivier, Tommy Lee Jones and Liam Neeson, maybe throw something how he appears in the highly-profitable The Battle at Lake Changjin duology. ~2026-30726-51 (talk) 15:48, 22 May 2026 (UTC)

- In the Early life section, the passage "MacArthur's father and grandfather unsuccessfully sought to secure Douglas a presidential appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, first from Grover Cleveland and then from William McKinley; both were rejected", Cleveland and McKinley should be described as American Presidents (as they were not random citizens, nor Congressmen like Otjen, who is identified as such.
- In the Lunéville-Baccarat Defensive sector heading, "Silver Star" should be wikilinked (as Croix de Guerre was, as well as Medal of Honor.
- In the same section, in the image caption "French General de Bazelaire decorating Colonel Douglas MacArthur with the Croix de Guerre, 18 March 1918", Croix de Guerre should be wikilinked.
- In the section Battle of Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensive the term "(third from left)" in the image caption "General Pershing (second from left) decorates Brigadier General MacArthur (third from left) with the DSC, October 1918. Major General Charles T. Menoher (left) reads out the citation while Colonel George E. Leach (fourth from left) and Lieutenant Colonel William J. Donovan await their decorations" can be deleted, as Pershing is already specifically identified in parentheses and is pinning the medal on MacArthur, so there can be no confusion whom MacArthur is.
- In the same section and same caption ("General Pershing (second from left) decorates Brigadier General MacArthur (third from left) with the DSC, October 1918. Major General Charles T. Menoher (left) reads out the citation while Colonel George E. Leach (fourth from left) and Lieutenant Colonel William J. Donovan await their decorations.") the identification of Colonel Leach as "(fourth from left)" can be eliminated. Every one to his left will have been identified, and only he and Colonel Donovan remain. It is customary in image captions (barring overriding considerations) for figures to be identified from left to right, the way the English language is written and read. Thus the convention (when only two men are left, both standing to the right of MacArthur) is for them to be presumed to be in left-to-right order. Leach, then Donovan. In addition, both men are linked to articles with their photos.

Field Marshal is the correct rank
MacArther was appointed Field Marshal of the Philippine Army in 1936. So, his correct rank is Field Marshal Philippine Army /5 Star General US Army. ~2026-37577-95 (talk) 05:03, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
