• Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)

New contest!

This month has seen an incredible amount of activity creating high quality content, with 3 FAs, 3 FACs, and a veritable flood of GAs and GANs, not to mention the FLs and FLCs. To help maintain this high level of activity going forward, WikiProject Tree of Life is starting a new monthly rolling contest, inspired by the contest run by WikiProject Military History. This contest should hopefully help incentivize editors to contribute in ways that are less daunting than writing articles that are GA and FA-quality. Even improving articles from stub to start class, or helping other editors by reviewing their work at GAN, FAC, or FLC, gets you points, with bonus points for articles with especially high page views. Make sure to participate in any way you can, and help improve the 'pedia while having fun and winning Barnstars!

• A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Contest results

The first edition of our new monthly contest had perhaps a little less participation than I hoped for, but it still resulted in a huge amount of content work, mainly focussed on de-stubbing articles on little-known species, although we did also see two GAs for Holozoa and Hypericum perforatum. Overall, over 60 articles were improved, with most going from stubs or redlinks to fully fleshed out articles. The winner this month was Simongraham, who improved 21 articles about spiders, mainly to B and C class, and racked up 70 points, over twice the next highest. Hopefully, we'll continue to see such great work next month, with even more participants and even more articles improved. Also anyone who wants to help coordinate the contest can just drop by at the talk page, I really need help.

Contest results

The second edition of our monthly contest was even better than the last month, with 80 articles improved spanning the entire tree of life. The winner this month was Quetzal1964, who contributed to 47 articles, mainly relating to marine fish, and racked up 81 points in the process. In second place was simongraham, who got 60 points from 14 articles on various species of jumping spiders. simongraham is still at the top of our overall standings, with 130 points, and Quetzal1964's close behind on 108. Contest results

The third edition of our monthly contest saw Quetzal1964 win for the second month in a row, scoring 68 points from 39 articles about a variety of marine fishes. In second place for the month is Olmagon, who scored 45 points from 10 articles on extinct crustaceans and geckoes. In the overall standings, Quetzal1964 leapfrogged over simongraham into first place, with 176 points from 109 articles; simongraham is now in second place with 136 points from 37 articles. The December edition of the contest is now open: feel free to drop by and participate if you work on any TOL-related articles this month.

New newsletter!

Now, this newsletter is technically not new, but I have only recently become aware of its existence and am only a month late, so it still counts. Wikiproject Fungi's Lichen task force has a new newsletter that is very nicely formatted and also features much better writing than this newsletter. Contest results

And so ends the fourth edition of the monthly rolling contest, as well as the 2023 Tree of Life Contest as a whole. This month saw simongraham win with a very impressive 120 points from 27 articles. Quetzal1964 was second with 74 points from 37 articles. The annual contest was a close race between simongraham and Quetzal1964; simongraham won first place with 256 points from 64 articles, and Quetzal1964 was second with 250 points from 146 articles. Snoteleks was third with 79 points from 33 articles. Congratulations to everyone who won this year and my gratitude to everyone else who helped raise the quality of articles in our little corner of Wikipedia this year. Additionally, a very Happy New Year to everyone in the project and here's looking forward to continuing our good work in 2024!

Our first double issue in almost four years, although we will try to return to a monthly schedule henceforth (incidentally, the last double issue saw Markham's storm petrel at GAN, and this one sees it finally pass FAC). A highly competitive first round of the WikiCup sees four Tree of Life editors advance to the second round: MtBotany, Fritzmann2002, Ealdgyth, and AryKun The March 2024 GAN Backlog Drive starts today; everyone is welcome to participate and help reduce the backlog of GANs. Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

The newsletter will not be returning to a monthly format (mainly because the author is busy failing every exam imaginable) and is on a bimonthly schedule for the foreseeable future. The second round of the WikiCup was very competitive, requiring the highest points total to advance since 2014. Two TOL editors, AryKun and Fritzmann2002, advanced to the third round. The March edition of our monthly rolling contest was won by simongraham, who amassed 118 points from 21 articles on various species of jumping spider; in second place was Quetzal1964 with 109 points from 53 articles on marine ray-finned fish. Hi @JoJan, I have been following up on new species articles. I have been noticing a trend in your new articles. Often there is an empty external links section, see these edits here and here. Is there a reason for this section?

Additionally, I have noticed that occasionally geographic categories are missing from your articles, see here and here. I have been adding them for a few days now, would it be possible for you to incorporate this in your article drafting process? My changes are more than that. Don't add {{taxonbar}} if there is no Wikidata item; or make the Wikidata item. Use {{BioRef}} instead of a raw URL ref. Add the appropriate stub tag. Etc. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:22, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Following up, I have noticed that categories have improved. Thank you! Congrats on making it out of Aegista and beyond.

Some other notes:

• You occasionally miss adding periods in your distribution sections.
• Some sections you create lack citations. I know that it is likely to be found in the very few sources that are listed, but it would be good to get those citations inline.
• If possible/available could you Wikilink the authority name in the infobox? It could be useful to readers.

As a very experienced editor, I am sure you know there are many valid ways to format references. Is there a reason you avoid citation templates? Using {{Cite taxon}}, {{Cite book}}, {{Cite web}}, {{Cite journal}}, etc. could be helpful towards standardising the information.

I am sure @UtherSRG has some thoughts on this front.

I understand you remarks. I'm working in this project pretty much alone, and I thank the occasional collaborators. I'm already of an advanced age and I hope I still have some time left. Furthermore the time I can spend on my computer is limited, but I do what I can. Following all your remarks - justified as they are - would slow me down considerably. There are just so many templates and categories - this is not a piece of cake. Already I have to invest so much time in research for text in public domain and for images (photos or original drawings) in lots of museums and dedicated websites. If I have to follow all your recommendations, this would slow down the creation of new articles or the much needed expansion of already existing stubs. If just we had more collaborators.... That's no excuse. Have a scrap book where you have all of the basics ready to just drop in the data. Or have a baseline article that has all of what we are talking about already implemented and use that as a reminder of what to do. There are ways of making it easier. I get what you are saying @JoJan. I agree that this is a tough undertaking and the research you are doing to prepare these articles must be arduous to comb through. It is amazing that you supply so many images to your articles.

You are not totally alone. As you can see we are trying to improve the articles, but usually they are routine edits that if incorporated into your drafting process, would require less maintenance work from us. However, there is only so much I can do when I see an unsourced statement. I do not have the expertise or the time (or access) to read every book/reference you incorporate into your articles.

On the collaboration front, how is WikiProject Gastropods going? Have you tried writing on the article Talk page and tagging new users in seeking help? You might be able to rustle up some new recruits by posting on WikiProject Tree of Life and related forums. WP:TEAMWORK has some ideas as well. Shake the tree and see what falls out.

Have you experimented with the new ref tools in the Wikipedia editing modules or over at Help:Citation tools lately? You might be surprised about how quick some of these tools can be. Of course, nothing is perfect and some adjustments will need to be made to the title or authors often, but if you already have that info, it can be pretty quick. Additionally, the Insert Template Wizard can be copy-paste. If it is a frequent source, consider making a master template in a userspace and adjusting the page numbers as necessary.

If that is not in cards, you might find a partner, by requesting help at WikiProject Reliability or WikiProject Citation cleanup.

As another user mentioned on your talk page a year or so ago, links break, and having untemplated citations make it difficult to archive. One way to look at this, is that you are setting up future malacologist and malacology-enthusiasts up for better success (and an easier time) in their curiosity and research endeavours if your referencing is parsable and inline. What is that old Greek(?) or Japenese(?) saying about planting trees so that future generations may enjoy the shade?

Thank you for your kind words and especially for the useful tips you provided. I must admit I hadn't noticed the "Cite" button in the toolbar before. It's incredibly handy, and I've already used it several times. Regarding finding new recruits, I've sent many invitations over the years. Occasionally, some individuals have started editing, but they often didn't continue. This is understandable, as contributing requires not only a good understanding of gastropod taxonomy but also a thorough knowledge of how to write on Wikipedia, with all its rules, templates, and categories.
