Article spelling/format

I would ask you to stop forcing 'Oxford spelling' onto articles that you're editing, often with associated changes to the spelling within the articles themselves. Changing the format or style within an article goes contrary to WP:RETAIN and is specifically deprecated editing, without an argument based on WP:TIES achieved through discussion and consensus. Looking at some of your recent edits, in amongst the many auto-generated ones is a stream of changes that meet the deprecated activity described in the Manual of Style as "enforcing optional style in a bot-like fashion without prior consensus", and this needs to stop, please. Thank you in anticipation MapReader (talk) 09:49, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Ok. I apologize for that. May ask you a question? If let's say I encounter an article written in American English and has the date format "DMY", could I change either one of two for consistency? Or is it against the manual? Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 10:43, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
No, you can’t. Date format and spelling/style format aren’t necessarily linked, even though the US is pretty much the only country using MDY. Leave the style and date format of articles alone, unless there is reason to change them per TIES or RETAIN. MapReader (talk) 16:09, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
Ok. To clarify more, can I add date format and spelling/style format to articles that don't have it to uniformize the article? Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 16:48, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
Only if that reflects the existing state of the article. Adding tags for American or British English or DMY or MDY to articles that are already in that format is fine, per RETAIN. What isn’t OK is for you to arbitrarily change the format to Oxford spelling - as you have done multiple times without any explanation, at the same time forcing Oxford spelling edits into the article. Who do you think you are deciding that all these articles need to be in Oxford spelling? It’s a minority spelling package, rarely used in both the US and UK, and doesn’t merit widespread use in WP. MapReader (talk) 18:41, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
Ok it's all clear now. By the way I don't think it's necessary to say "Who do you think you are". I didn't mean to make those changes in a provocative way. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 19:27, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Trivial edits

Hi! Please don't make edits like this one, which made no difference to the displayed text of the article – they clutter up watchlists and do nothing to improve the encyclopaedia. In particular, please don't do so using AWB – these edits are specifically disallowed under Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser#Rules of use #4, Do not make insignificant or inconsequential edits. You should be aware that a number of editors have found themselves unable to edit after persistently making edits of this kind. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:26, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Correction: your edit did include one small useful change, my apologies; it's all the other pointless changes that you'd do well to drop. Thank you, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
November 1st is an unacceptable date format per MOS:BADDATE, so my edit that included November 1st → November 1 is perfectly fine, there was absolutely no reason to revert it. Also, I am using AWB with the "skip if only minor genfixes" option activated, so I only make changes that DO make a difference to the displayed text of the article. Genfixes and page numbers

Edits like this are incorrect, as a single page is quoted, not a range, as can be seen if you follow the link and look at the page cited . There is certainly no excuse for you to repeat this error once it has been reverted with an edit summary explaining it. Please look what you are doing rather than blindly carrying out bot like edits using AWB - you are still responsible for edits when you use AWB.Nigel Ish (talk) 20:41, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi. I sincerely apologize for that. I'm going to try and avoid em dashes fixes with AWB.

Redirects

Hello,

I am concerned that you have nominated so many redirects for deletion in such a short time, and I'm not sure you're wholly familiar with the criteria for keeping and deleting redirects pbp 16:15, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi. Why do you think that I'm not familiar with the criteria? I genuinely think that my nominations are appropriate. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 20:33, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
"No page links here" isn't sufficient rationale for deletion of a redirect so IDK why you keep bringing it up. You also used the same deletion rationale over and over again pbp 21:03, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
I used the same rationale because I thought it would be enough, since they all were similar cases. By the way I don't get your "keep" opinion on "LeOld LeBald Le4and6". That's got to be one of the most random redirects ever created lmao Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 21:08, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Celtic

You are experienced enough an editor to know that when an edit is questioned and reverted, you don't just revert it a second time and attempt to communicate your thoughts in edit summaries. Please take the discussion to the talk page. Your edit is misplaced because it talks about Celtic's stay in the top league before mentioning them starting in it. There is also a list of Celtic's achievements later in the lead, some of them more notable than this. If they can wait until the second paragraph, I'm sure this can too. Escape Orbit (Talk) 06:34, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

You are right. It's fine for you if I move it after "They played their first match in May 1888, a friendly match against Rangers which Celtic won 5–2."? Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 09:55, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
It might actually work best as the text on the diagram of Celtic's league postions. That illustrates what it says. Escape Orbit (Talk) 15:36, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
That would be appropriate, but I think it may be too long for a caption. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 17:27, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Cheers, mate! Another request pls, an article for Augusto César Lendoiro, as agreed before. Can I also ask for more articles as well? if yes, here is my list:

Some of them were deleted, if you can retrieve their original content that would be much appreciated! 2A02:908:454:1660:0:0:0:D517 (talk) 04:32, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Why were they deleted? Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 06:49, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
That user had different accounts in the past, so they were banned for sockpuppetry despite writing good content. However, for the sake of contribution to this platform, at least the content could be restored. 2A02:908:454:1660:0:0:0:D517 (talk) 07:23, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Adding the reigning award holder for 2024 Ballon d'Or

Why is it needed to add the reigning award holder in the upcoming award event? I never seen an upcoming award event with reigning award holder mentioned. It doesn't make any sense. Guyrichtheman (talk) 11:20, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Why do you think it doesn't make any sense? Recognizing the reigning holder is appropriate. It's temporary, and it has been done before. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 12:09, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Help

Hello, Mazewaxie!

I noticed that you've made some edits to the English Wiki page of Lionel Messi. I saw that the main image (Lionel-Messi-Argentina-2022-FIFA-World-Cup (cropped).jpg) has a very low resolution. So, I upscaled the image and posted it on Wiki Commons as File: (Lionel-Messi-Argentina-2022-FIFA-World-Cup sharpness.jpg). Several pages in other languages have already accepted the new upscaled image, and I believe it would be great to update the English Wiki page as well. Could you please make this change quickly?

Thank you for your attention.

Information icon Hello. In a 2019 edit, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the first author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. This edit you made in 2019 has been brought to my attention. You aren't likely to do anything like this again, are you? John (talk) 20:07, 20 March 2025 (UTC)

Recent edit? You went back to 2019 to find it. I don't think your comment is appropriate at all. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 19:42, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Yes, it was a very bad edit from 2019 which went undetected until now and caused significant work for two editors to clean up. Please don't do anything like that again. John (talk) 20:05, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
You stated: "in a recent edit". That is factually incorrect. I don't see the point of bringing that up. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 20:07, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Very well, I have amended the text of the warning template to reflect your point. Now, would it be possible to answer the substantive point? Are you now aware that language varieties cannot just be changed at a whim? John (talk) 21:11, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Of course I am aware of that. I don't see the point of bringing that up SIX years later, speaking as if I recently made that mistake. That's all. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 17:23, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

List of international goals scored by Lionel Messi

You reverted my edits, and they were good ones. They reduced the article's size, removed unnecessary whitespace, and corrected the number of opponents Messi scored against. What you did was pointless, but I guess yours has to be on top. Wolfgang (talk) 18:57, 14 November 2025 (UTC)

Lionel Messi

Hey @Mazewaxie, wanted to get your thoughts on a possible future conundrum… Say for example, a player like Marquinhos gets close to Messi's career trophy count and eventually gets to 47. Assuming Messi's current trophy count stay the same, would that make Marquinhos the most decorated player in history? Especially if no reliable sources state that he overtook Messi? Could get confusing if all reliable sources still state Messi as the most decorated player of all time with 48 trophies even though his lead says 46.

Not sure if you’re familiar with baseball, but there happens to be an ongoing discussion as to whether Clayton Kershaw is a two or three-time World Series champion. That case seems to have similarities with how this problem with Messi could unfold. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 22:15, 9 December 2025 (UTC)

Messi

Hello! I wanted to follow up about the revert you made here. I want to clarify why I made those edits. In my view, the current text does not make it clear what it means to "play for Newell's". This may be a cultural thing, as I am from the U.S. and am not familiar with "sports clubs" such as Newell's which, after looking at their page, seem to have multiple teams of various ages, that compete in various divisions/leagues. That's why I wanted to clarify that if Messi was playing "for Newell's" as a child, he would be playing for a youth team. Since he is such an incredible player and was also very talented as a child, it is not impossible for a general reader to infer that he played in some type of all-ages division. Again, this may be obvious for you, but not for me. It would also be great if we could have an explanation of what "youth side" and "first team" mean, because those are also terms which I'm not familiar with. If those can be wikilinked, that would be more than adequate. I hope you understand that this is constructive, good-faith criticism, and I hold no ill will towards you for the reverts. I just want the Messi page to be the best it can be, and easily understandable for general readers.

Two more minor points:

  • The sentence "He is the most decorated player in the history of professional football having won 46 team trophies" needs to have a comma between "football" and "having" to make it grammatically correct.
  • In this segment "His future as a professional player was threatened when, aged 10, he was diagnosed...", I would strongly recommend changing "His" to "Messi's" since it's the start of a new paragraph. Also, in English it's more correct to say "at the age of 10" than "aged 10" in this context.

Thanks for listening! I hope we can collaborate and not clash over this. Have a great day! OrdinaryOtter (talk) 22:58, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

Hi. I am sorry if I came out as rude in reverting your edits, it wasn't my intention. I will try to explain to you: in football/soccer we use "youth side" or "youth teams" because football/soccer teams are different from let's say, NBA teams, if you are familiar with them. Teams like Newell's (Argentina), FC Barcelona (Spain) or basically any club really, have an "academy", that starts forming kids from a very young age. So when whe mention "youth teams" we refer to those teams, comprised of players aged let's say 5 to 16 years old more or less. Messi used to play for Newell's from 1995 to 2000, so he was aged 8 to 13. He played for those youth teams I mentioned beforehand, and he performed juggling tricks during the half-time break of games of the first team, meaning the professional team that plays in the Argentine league. I don't know if I explained myself correctly, I hope that I clarified something for you, and I appreciate your kindness and interest about this subject. Regarding the minor points you mentioned, I am totally fine with the changes you suggested. I apologize again, and if you have any question feel free to ask, right now I don't have much time, but I would love to help you if you need it. Have a great day you as well! Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 08:53, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
Hey there! Thank you for such a nice reply. I did not think you were rude, I just felt you didn't understand where my edits were coming from, which is probably because I rushed into editing when I should have first asked questions and raised issues on the talk page. I apologize for that.
In this edit, I incorporated the minor edits we discussed, added wikilinks for ignorant Americans like myself, and did some copyediting and re-arranging of the Newell's paragraph. I think it flows a bit better now, but I welcome your feedback. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 09:30, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

Bowie addition

Hey there. I saw this edit you made on David Bowie, and I was wondering, did you use AI to write it? I ask because I own all of the sources you cited, and they all provide breakdowns of Bowie's career but don't necessarily discuss his musicianship, like generally. The last paragraph in particular is absolutely not supported by Buckley. I asked chatgpt about Bowie's musicianship, and it used language similar to that last paragraph, so I had to ask. I apologize if I'm being brash or rude, I just wanted to let you know what I noticed, especially since I'm pretty familiar with the sources being cited. Thanks. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 17:23, 28 February 2026 (UTC)

Hi. Yes I used AI to help expanding the section, but I didn't verify the sources. I apologize for that. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 20:31, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
Ok thanks, I appreciate your honesty. Try to refrain from doing that in the future, as the edit basically constitutes original research (see WP:AIFAIL). I have used AI in the past on some writings, mainly to reword a sentence or two to avoid WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE, which I'd then reword further. In the current year, content clearly written by AI will most likely be reverted if it's caught, especially if it's a watched page. Just letting you know for the future. Thanks. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 20:48, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
It's original research because I messed up the sources, right? Otherwise the content added was not controversial I think Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 22:15, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
Well Wiki's AI policy isn't exactly clear. But considering that there's an AI cleanup project, I've been under the assumption it's frowned upon. Plus, you have to disclose AI writing. The content in question wasn't necessarily controversial (it would have helped having actual sources behind it), but there were still very clear signs of AI writing in the addition. I personally think using AI writing comes off as lazy. Wikipedia was founded as an encyclopedia written by people, and LLMs aren't people; it violates the basic principle. That's just one editor's opinion, but I know countless others think the same way. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 00:25, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

Great White Shark

Hi Mazewaxie - I don't know if you've seen that great white shark is up for featured article candidate review. I noticed from the page's history that you have made substantial edits to the page, including setting the engvar in April 2020 and reconfirming it in May 2024. It would be helpful if you could look in on the current review and add your reasons for this choice, and where you think the page should head, please. There's also a short spin-off discussion at User talk:LittleJerry#IUCN. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:02, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi! Honestly I don't remember why did I choose the Oxford spelling specifically. It is perfectly fine to change it if we feel that another engvar is more appropriate. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 21:36, 12 March 2026 (UTC)

File:1956 France Football magazine cover.jpg

Although you've re-added the image to Ballon d'Or you haven't address the issue in my last comment at WP:MCQ namely that the rationale isn't valid for use in the Ballon article. At the moment the rationale explains the file's usage as Main infobox. The image is used for identification in the context of critical commentary of the work for which it serves as cover art. It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing the work, to show the primary visual image associated with the work, and to help the user quickly identify the work and know they have found what they are looking for. In the Ballon article, it's not in the main infobox, nor is it being used to identify the article. The NFCC are deliberately stringent to reduce the amount of non-free content used in Wikipedia.

All 10 criteria of the WP:NFCC are mandatory and for WP:NFCC#8 which is the criterion in question, you have to explain why its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding preferably with supporting citations. So ideally the text of the Ballon article has a sentence/paragraph explaining that in the early years, the award was announced in France Football (with citation) if it can be established that this was the way the winner was announced - I suspect it was and not e.g. at any sort of ceremony. Then it becomes far easier to provide a rationale for the image saying something like "this is the issue of France Football that announced Stanley Matthews as the first recipient of the European player of the year". I made this edit, just minutes before you wrote me. I don't know if it is enough. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 12:49, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
It might be. I think it would benefit from supporting commentary in the Ballon article as I explained. Nthep (talk) 12:52, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
There is a caption in the Ballon d'Or article. I think that cover is a nice addition to the overview section, and specifically that one, since it is about the inauguaral award. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 12:54, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
It's not about nice, it's about significance. On way to look at it is to say "if the image was omitted would it make any difference to the reader's understanding of the article?" As it stands, I'd say the answer is more no than yes and the picture is decorative but not essential. If you can say, definitively and with source, "this is how the first award was announced" then the answer is yes.
There are loads of articles where non-free images would be nice but that's not enough. We've all been in this situation where we'd like to use a non-fee image but we can't justify it. I think, that with this one you're very close and a bit more explanation puts it clearly over the line. All it needs is some history of the Ballon to say "... in the first few years the winner was simply announced in France Football ..." then you can cite that and the case is made. Nthep (talk) 13:07, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
Yes, that's how they announced the winners back then, but I can't find an article that explicitly states it. I thought it would have been simpler to justify that image, since it is the issue in which the inaugural Ballon d'Or was presented, and it is feautured on the Ballon d'Or article. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 13:16, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
I wrote a new rationale, I hope it can be enough. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 13:24, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
Much better, not 100% watertight but I think more than good enough. Nthep (talk) 15:05, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
