Discussion at Talk:Marie (given name)

Hello! There is a discussion ongoing at Talk:Marie (given name) about whether there should be a seperate article for list of names. Should anyone wish to join, here is the link Omnis Scientia (talk) 22:15, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

Dispute on need for two pages for the same given name

I and User:Omnis Scientia disagree as to the desirability of having both Marie (given name) and List of people with given name Marie. The discussion has been opened by me at Talk:Marie (given name)#Dispute: one page or two?. Comments are welcome. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:17, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

Bellande

FYI Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bellande. Two individuals with the same surname is good enough as a stub, isn't it? Of course it is better to add more about the origin, but by our standards that can come later, am I correct? Zigzig20s (talk) 11:17, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

Uncategorisable surnames?

This problem is restricted to cases where there is a WP:PTOPIC and exactly one notable person with that surname. As example, see Podenzana and its {{for}} hatnote. I don't know how extensive the problem is. I've seen a handful of similar cases, but my searching skills aren't good enough to find them.

A {{surname}} page would fail WP:NNAME. A {{dab}} page would fail WP:ONEOTHER. I looked for a possible third title match in French, German, Italian and Spaniah Wikipedias, but couldn't find one.

{{R from surname}} handles surnames with only one notable bearer. The class in issue falls through the cracks.

Any ideas? The best I can come up with would be to create Podenzana (surname) as an {{R from surname}} to Massimo Podenzana. That would need a guideline to point to to inhibit deletion at WP:RFD.

I suggest that the outcome of this discussion be documented somewhere; perhaps at Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy/Style advice, whether or not we can reach a WP:CONSENSUS. Narky Blert (talk) 16:34, 29 March 2026 (UTC)

I don't understand what the problem is that you are looking to solve. Do you think there is something wrong with using {{For|the Italian cyclist|Massimo Podenzana}} as currently presented in Podenzana? I don't see any problem there, or is it something else? olderwiser 16:44, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
The surname cannot be categorised as a surname. Narky Blert (talk) 04:48, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
I think it would be reasonable to create that redirect from Podenzana (surname) and categorise the redirect as Category:Surnames.
Do all {{R from surname}} pages get put in that category? Looking at the category (first few pages of "A") there are indeed quite a lot of redirects listed: I didn't spot any disambiguated redirects but I can't see a problem in creating this one. PamD 07:43, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

Overlapping categories

My Cfd for Category:Lists of people by given name was rejected. (I also see that there's a Category:Lists of people by surname.)

As far as I can see, this is essentially covered by Category:Given names. The only differences are (1) the title of the articles ("List of people with given name X"), and (2) there are some entries in the Given names category that are just etymologies and variants, with no actual people listed therein. I gave examples where simply changing the title of a list would, by the "logic" of those who opposed the Cfd, necessitate a category change (e.g. Fannie to List of people with given name Fannie). Conversely, if you accept that there is a significant distinction that requires two categories, then the Lists category is vastly underpopulated, e.g. Tom (given name) and Harry (given name) (no Dick (nickname)).
