Aaron Bandler (July 25, 2024). "Wikipedia Editors Title Article "Gaza Genocide"". The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. Retrieved August 7, 2024. Interestingly, there is a Wikipedia article titled "Allegations of genocide in the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel" and there was a brief discussion on if it should be renamed to "Genocide in the 2023-led Hamas attack on Israel" that appears to have stalled out.

The difference is that in Gaza Genocide, we found that the overwhelming majority of secondary sources about the academic consensus (that is to say, ones that describe it) said that there was a growing consensus that Israel was committing genocide. Not to rehash that whole debate here, but here's the list I posted in the last RFC there for comparison (better sources are available now, but this should give you a sense of the difference and of what sort of sources would be sufficient here; the full cites are available on that article, but these are all high-quality academic sources):

Quotes from sources
Sultany 2024, p. 4: "Although legal scholars and commentators were slow to recognize the severity and urgency of the situation, this article sought to show that there is an emerging consensus that Israel's actions in Gaza are not another instance of armed conflict but instead amount to genocide"
Swart 2025, p. 3: "South Africa's actions led to an ever-growing consensus in international legal circles that Israel is committing genocide"
Shaw 2025b, p. 3: "By the end of 2024, when Amnesty International published a comprehensively evidenced and legally argued case, the consensus that Israel was committing genocide was becoming overwhelming".
Gessen 2024: "Trachtenberg testified to a consensus opinion among historians of genocide that what is happening in Gaza can indeed be called a genocide, largely because the intent to cause death on a massive scale has been so clear in the statements of Israeli officials"
Bouranova 2024: "The opposition is political, as there is consensus amongst the international human rights legal community, many other legal and political experts, including many Holocaust scholars, that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza."

Without sources comparable to those, comparing the two articles is WP:FALSEBALANCE; obviously the fact that scholars agree that genocide is occurring in one case does not mean we can simply assume they all agree in every case. And the sources you presented here, at least, don't come anywhere close to meeting that bar. Only one of them is academic and it merely argues the position and presents the author's own opinion; it doesn't describe that position as widely-accepted. The others are even worse - primary sources to governments, advocacy orgs, opinionated newspapers and so on; and many of them don't even say what you imply - eg. several of them only attribute the claims you're presumably citing them to Amnesty International and don't actually use the word genocide for that, using the word only in the context of The rights group has also accused Israel of committing genocide in its retaliatory campaign in Gaza, an accusation that Israel has vehemently denied. But either way a source like that would only support attribution for Amnesty International's own opinions. If you want us to state it in the article voice, I suggest looking for more high-quality academic sources, especially ones that summarize the academic position as a whole, and particularly ones that say the kinds of things I summarized in my collapse. Sources like those are the threshold for describing something as genocide in the article voice. --Aquillion (talk) 14:48, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
While some of the sources mentioned are not academic, there are scholarly and genocide studies sources that describe the October 7 attacks in terms of genocide or examine them within the framework of the Genocide Convention. For instance, a peer-reviewed legal analysis published by Cambridge University Press explicitly claims that the October 7 attack meets the legal definition of genocide. The article states, “The evidence examined in this article demonstrates that the attack on October 7th by Hamas constitutes genocide under international law.” It also concludes that Hamas’ actions showed both the required actus reus and genocidal intent under the Genocide Convention. The analysis cites ideological goals, systematic targeting of Jews, and coordinated mass killings of civilians. Genocide scholars have described the attack as genocidal violence or a genocidal massacre aimed at Jews as a group. Historians and genocide scholars suggest that Hamas’ ideology and the systematic targeting of Jewish civilians illustrate genocidal intent against Jews as “a distinct ethnic, racial and national group.” Additionally, some scholars in genocide studies have labeled the attack as genocidal or part of a genocidal pattern within the conflict. They point out that Hamas’ ideology and actions on October 7 involved intentional attacks on Jews as a protected group under the Genocide Convention. These sources show that the claim that October 7 constituted genocide exists in academic literature and genocide studies discussions, not just in political or advocacy sources. Since Wikipedia already addresses the genocide classification in Gaza using scholarly analyses and legal arguments, similar academic discussions about October 7 should at least be represented in the article coverage, such as through attributions like “some scholars argue…,” rather than being dismissed as lacking scholarly support. We do say that, roughly-speaking! The second paragraph of the lead starts with Various legal experts and genocide studies scholars cite a multitude of reasonings for their allegation of genocide..., which makes it clear that scholars who take that position do exist. --Aquillion (talk) 16:48, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
Then why don't we make clear that scholars who take the position Israel isn't committing genocide in Gaza exist? Footballnerd2007 • talk ⚽ 18:36, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
We do! The relevant part of the lead there currently says There is increasing consensus among genocide and international legal scholars on the genocide assessment, although some academics challenge it. Per WP:BALASP we have to make it clear that those scholars' views is a minority, but we do note that they exist. The wording here is different because we don't have sources like the ones I quoted above saying there's a consensus in the first place. --Aquillion (talk) 19:03, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
This proposal wp:FALSEBALANCEy and wp:HORSETRADEy. It's concerning that you are presenting sources that call it 'crimes against humanity' and don't call it genocide as if they call it genocide. Honestly, if you just looked through the sources in this article you would have found tonnes that are both better and call it 'genocide'! The thing is, that going through the sources it's clear that scholarship is way more divided than when it comes to Isreal's actions in Gaza—blindlynx 15:04, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
Strong oppose: There is no academic consensus that the October 7 attack was a genocide. This is WP:FALSEBALANCE with the Gaza genocide, where there does indeed exist such a consensus. — EarthDude (Talk) 07:59, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

Oppose - Extremely fringe position that exists solely to counteract the genocide categorisation of Israel's action in Gaza. Koshuri(あ!) 04:01, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Comment - it would help if you checked the sources before you present them as evidence that they claim it is genocide. You link to multiple sources that are only reporting the determination of one source (Amnesty International report) which does not say genocide was perpetrated, and similarly the Human Rights Watch report discusses crimes against humanity not genocide.
So of the 6 sources you provided only 3 that say 7 October was genocide:
Michael McCaul (US politician with no specialisms)
Cdjp1 presents compelling support that this is beyond allegations and the title can be renamed October 7 genocide. Whether there is academic consensus has no bearing on the title, only voicing. The title is developed with WP:COMMONNAME and WP:CONCISE. Its actually a bit difficult to determine a common name for this topic, but there is significant support for it being described as a genocide. Voicing it in the prose is a separate discussion. ←Metallurgist (talk) 05:49, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
Oppose. There does not appear to be academic consensus that the October 7 attacks constitute a genocide, and using the Gaza Genocide as an excuse is WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, and irrelevant. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs}} 16:05, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
Oppose - I don't see enough to justify this move as it's a rather fringe position that the massacre was a full-on genocide & I agree with other editors above that the comparisons made to the Gaza genocide article are wholly unhelpful. - Butterscotch Beluga (talk) 19:52, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
oppose this is a POV title not agreed on by the broad majority of academic sources, which creates a WP:FALSEBALANCE with the Gaza genocide. ... sawyer * any/all * talk 15:07, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

There are plenty of images of dead and mutilated bodies available online from this attack, why are they not shown in this article? For comparison, the Gaza genocide article is filled with such images. If Wikipedia is supposed to be a neutral source of information, grotesque images should be justified regardless of the article.
