- January 1
- Bulgaria adopted the Euro, becoming the 21st member of the Eurozone.[1]
- Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim and first Asian American to hold the office.[2]
- January 3 – US forces arrested president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores following American airstrikes on military sites in northern Venezuela.[3]
- January 7 – Protests spread across the United States following the killing of Renée Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.[4]
- January 8 – Thongloun Sisoulith was re-elected as General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the most powerful position in the one-party state.[5]
- January 9 – A majority of EU member states voted in favour of a free trade agreement with Mercosur.[6]
- January 14 - The governing MPs in the Parliament of Singapore unanimously passed a motion to deem Workers' Party MP Pritam Singh being unsuitable for the position of Leader of the Opposition, following a perjury conviction relating to the resignation of former MP Raeesah Khan in 2021.[7][8][9][10] Prime Minister Lawrence Wong eventually removed Singh from the position the day after.[11][12]
- January 15 – The 2026 Ugandan general election was held, with incumbent Yoweri Museveni winning a seventh consecutive term and deadly protests breaking out over the result.[13]
- January 17 – Protests occur throughout Greenland and Denmark over US president Donald Trump's threats to annex the territory.[14]
- January 18 – The first round of the 2026 Portuguese presidential election was held.[15]
- January 22 – The United States formally withdrew from the World Health Organization.[16]

- Tô Lâm was re-elected as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the most powerful position in the one-party state.[17]
- Iliana Iotova was sworn is as president of Bulgaria following the resignation of Rumen Radev, becoming the first woman to hold the post.[18][19]
- January 24 – The killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis fuels further protests across the United States.[20]
- January 27 - The India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (simply called the India–EU FTA) is a comprehensive free trade agreement concluded between the Republic of India and the European Union (EU) on 27 January 2026, following negotiations that spanned nearly two decades.[21][22]
- January 29 – The European Union designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.[23]

- February 1
- Former British Ambassador to the United States and cabinet member Peter Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party over links to Jeffrey Epstein.[24] Mandelson was later reported to the Metropolitan Police and resigned from the House of Lords over accusations he forwarded internal government emails to Epstein.[25]
- Laura Fernández Delgado was elected president in the first round of the 2026 Costa Rican general election.[26]
- February 5 – The New START Treaty between the United States and Russia expired.

- The Liberal Democratic Party won a supermajority in the 2026 Japanese general election.[27]
- A general election and a constitutional referendum were held in Thailand, with conservative populist party Bhumjaithai winning the largest number of seats and the adoption of a new constitution being approved.[28]

- Mojtaba Khamenei was announced as Supreme Leader of Iran following his father's assassination.[44]
- March 13 - First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel entered negotiations with the Trump administration in an effort to end the United States embargo against Cuba.[45]

- June 6 – A group of young Indian students and leftists formed an unofficial Cockroach Janta Party, precipitating a series of nationwide protests in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi over a leak of NEET exam previously occurred one month earlier on May 3.[56][57]

- June 29 – Following recounts and scrutiny in the second round of the 2026 Peruvian general election, four-time presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the late-Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, was declared as the country's second female President-elect, after Dina Boluarte. She later took office on 28 July 2026.[59]

- July 2 – The 2026 Algerian parliamentary election was held.
- July 4 – The United States celebrates its semiquincentennial anniversary of its indepencence.
- July 7 – Two explosive devices near the Four Seasons Hotel Damascus explode, wounding at least 18 people. It is alleged to be an attempted assassination of Emmanuel Macron.[60]
- July 17 – Andy Burnham was elected unopposed in the Labour Party's leadership election, making him the party's newest leader and Prime Minister-designate.[61] Burnham took office three days later.[62]
- July 19 – The 2026 São Toméan presidential election was held, with incumbent nonpartisan President Carlos Vila Nova re-elected for a second five-year term.
- July 20 – Nicaraguan Co-President Daniel Ortega ceases their country's electoral system, thereby suspending the next general election indefinitely as the country's elections were now declared obsolete.[63]
- July 25 – Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns from the position in light of the protests over a NEET exam leak. Most of the protests ceased following his resignation.[64][65]
- July 30 – A conflict was clashed in the Morocco–Spain border when over 80,000 people attempted to breach entry into Ceuta and Melilla. This was the third such similar clash in said border within five years, after 2021 and 2022.

- August 7 – Amidst the backdrop on the ongoing Iran war, the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, a trilateral mutual defence pact between the three countries of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, were signed by its respective representatives: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.[66]
