マレーシアの華人(マレーシアのかじん)、すなわち中国系のルーツを有する住民は、同国において、マレー人に次いで2番目に大きい民族集団である。2020年国勢調査によれば、マレーシア国民の23.2%にあたる6,892,367人が華人である[2]。
初期の歴史
中国とマレー諸島の諸王朝の歴史的交流は古い歴史を持つ[3]。中国から同地域への人口移動に関する最初期の記録として知られるのは、モンゴルのジャワ侵攻にあたって1292年に行われた、ボルネオ島への出兵である[4][5]。同出兵後、多くの中国人がキナバタンガン川流域に定着した[6][7][8]。
15世紀の航海士・探検家である鄭和はマラッカを訪れている[9]。鄭和の遠征は、福建・広東の中国人ムスリム商人がマレー諸島に広がるのを助け、同地域におけるイスラム教の拡大に寄与した[10][11]。『明史』には、この時代の同地域における中国人定住地に関する記述がある[12]。1511年のポルトガルによるマラッカ占領(英語版)以降も、同地への人口流入は続いた[13]。1537年に刊行された黄衷(中国語版)の『海語』によれば、マラッカの華人はマレー人とは異なる習慣のもと生活していた[14]。
1641年のオランダによるマラッカ占領(英語版)後[15]、同地の中国人はオランダによる建造物普請に動員された[16]。オランダ当局は中国人は勤勉であるとして、彼らが植民地経済に関わることを推奨した[17]。また、オランダは1650年にはアチェ王国との条約を介してペラにも入植した[18]。ペラのスルタンであるアラーウッディーン(Alauddin)は、中国系労働者をスズ鉱山の開発のため動員することを許可した[19][20]。これにより、中国人労働者はスズ採掘において中心的役割を担うようになった。1780年の第四次英蘭戦争はスズ交易にあたって逆風となったが、多くの中国人鉱夫が残った[21]。
イギリス植民地期・日本占領期
マラッカとその周辺地域にはすでに多くの華人がいたとはいえ、マレーシアにおける中国系移民の流入が最大となったのは19世紀初頭、イギリス領マラヤ・イギリス領ボルネオ(英語版)が成立して以降である[22]。
1846年のラブアン直轄植民地設立後、客家を中心とする多くの中国人がボルネオに移住した。その後数年に渡り、北ボルネオ会社を介して中国人の移民が進んだ[23]。ラブアンおよび北ボルネオの中国人の労働先はおおむね農業周辺に限られていた。また、サラワク王国ではこれに加えて鉱業従事者もいた[24][25]。サラワク王のチャールズ・ブルックは中国人およびダヤク人の内陸部移民に積極的であった[26]。1876年にはクチンに華人の黒胡椒生産者が招かれ、その後、地元の中国人鉱夫や近隣のオランダ領ボルネオからの移民も加わった[27][28]。サラワクは世界第二位の胡椒生産地となったが、第一管区においては客家・福州人(英語版)、第三管区においては広東人(英語版)が同産業の支配的地位を担った[28][29]。イギリス領マラヤにてスズ鉱床が発見されたのち、多くの中国系移民がスズ採掘に従事した[30]。1870年代のマレー半島ではイポー・タイピン・スレンバンなどにスズ鉱夫のコミュニティが作られた[31][32]。19世紀には、500万人の中国人が雇用の機会を求めてイギリス領植民地ないし保護領に移民したと推計されている[33]。
1911年の辛亥革命前夜、孫文はマラヤ・ボルネオを含む在外華人コミュニティにて資金集めをしていた[34]。中華民国成立後、イギリス領マラヤにも国民党の支部が作られた[35]。また、1925年のシンガポールでの南洋共産党設立を皮切りに、東南アジアの在外華人コミュニティでは共産主義運動が活発化した[36][37]。マラヤ共産党はマラヤ・シンガポールの植民地当局に対する抵抗運動を行っていたが[38]、1940年には国共合作を背景として、イギリスに協力するかたちで対日運動をはじめるようになった[38][39]。1941年にはイギリス当局の共産党承認を背景に、マラヤ人民抗日軍(MPAJA)が組織される[40]。マラヤの華人を中心とする同組織は8大隊10,000人からなる兵力で日本軍に抵抗した[41]。また、アピ事件のように国民党系の組織による蜂起もあったが、弾圧された[42][43]。
戦後
戦後、MPAJAはマレー人を中心とする対日協力者とみなされる人物を殺害した[44]。さらに、彼らはイギリス軍にも攻撃を加えた[45]。一方で北ボルネオの華人コミュニティはイギリスに対して融和的であり、北ボルネオ直轄植民地(英語版)が成立した[46]。MPAJAはマラヤ民族解放軍(英語版)(MNLA)に改組し、イギリス当局に対するゲリラ戦を続けた[44]。1948年に宣言されたマラヤ危機について、当局の対応は混乱したものとなった[47][48]。1950年にはMNLAと中国系住民の接触を防ぐため、彼らを華人新村に移住させるブリッグス計画(英語版)が実行された[49]。 同計画のもと、700,000人の華人が新村に再定住させられた[50]。マラヤ連合は1957年にイギリスから独立するも、共産主義者の反乱は続いた[51]。1960年に陳平が武装解除したことにより、非常事態宣言は解除された[52][53]。
1961年には、トゥンク・アブドゥル・ラーマンの主導のもと、マレー周辺の旧イギリス植民地を統合する大マレーシア連邦構想が建てられた[54]。シンガポールのリー・クアンユーはこれに賛同したものの、人種・信条や社会的階層にかかわらず、すべてのマレーシア人が平等に尊重される「マレーシア人のためのマレーシア(英語版)」の必要性を訴えた[55][56]。しかし、マレーシアの成立後もリーら人民行動党と、マレー人優先を訴えるラーマンら統一マレー国民組織の関係はあまり良好なものとはならなかった。1964年シンガポール人種暴動(英語版)を経て、1965年にシンガポールはマレーシアから独立せしめられた[57][58][59]。
1969年のマレーシア総選挙では、マレー人政党が議席を大幅に減らし、華人政党が躍進した。これを理由に、マレー人と華人の大規模な衝突である5月13日事件が起こった。同事件後、マレーシア政府は華人と比べて社会経済的地位が低かったマレー人を教育・就職などで優遇するブミプトラ政策を開始した[60]。とはいえ、華人は経済的中心を担い続けており、マレーシアの株式保有率に占める華人の割合は1969年の22.8%から1990年には45.5%へと倍増した。また、マレーシアで最も裕福な人々のほとんどは中国系である[61]。
