In case you might find these useful, here are some tips on various approaches on editing/using Wikipedia, with an emphasis on outlines...

Pointers on green and orange links:

Links to disambiguation pages are generally bad. It is usually best to replace such a link with a link to a more specific article.

Redirects in outlines, on the other hand, are usually good. They can be used in a template to generate outlines (like Template:Outline city), and the links generally correspond with the titles of expansion articles and it is nice to have those titles already in place in the outline. So, if a section that a redirect points to gets expanded into an actual article, the redirect page becomes the article page for that topic, and the outline already points to it!

This also allows for standardization between outlines. For example, it helps in the development of outlines and navigation of city subjects if "History of x" is the standard go to link for history for all cities. And so on for other likely subtopics, like "Geography of x", "Economy of x", "Transportation of x", etc.

If you have no skin on Wikipedia specified, then your account defaults to the Vector skin. To be sure that's the one, you can check in Preferences under the Appearance tab -- and then it's right at the top of the page. I'm working on a new user script to make Special:CategoryTree easier/faster to use for outline developers.

It needs some refinements, but its basic functionality works! So, I thought you'd want to know about it...

It is ViewAsOutline-CategoryTree.js.

To install it, add this line to your Vector.js file:

importScript("User:The Transhumanist/ViewAsOutline-CategoryTree.js");

When you are on the CategoryTree page, it provides 4 menu items in the sidebar.

It is useful for when you have mode set to "pages except files" or "all pages".

After selecting the mode, you expand the tree to show more of it. To help speed that up, the "CatTree expand" menu item expands all the categories in the tree at the same time, one level each time you click it.

Once you are done expanding the tree to the way you want it, you click on "CT Wikicodify".

That adds link formatting to the links for easy copying/pasting into outlines.

Don't hit CT wikicodify until you are ready to prepare the links for copying/pasting, because further expanding doesn't work after you do (a bug).

Then you copy/paste links to your heart's content. :)

Very useful for working on outlines, such as city outlines.

Just put the name of the city in the category box, select pages except files or all pages under mode, and then press Show tree. Then expand the tree, and when you are ready, CT wikicodify.

Dear Cote d'Azur,

You are doing an awesome job on outlines, especially city outlines. Keep up the excellent work.

I've been working on a way to produce quality city outlines faster, that I thought you might be interested in. It takes a lot of the repetitive typing out the process. I've noticed you've been converting the previous city outline you've developed into the next city, which means deleting the old city name and typing the new city name over and over in the headings and standard entries.

There's a template, called Template:Outline city.

By inserting that template via a process called substitution, its content can be put into an outline where it can then be edited. It has a parameter, "{{{1}}}", which represents the city name that gets included in the substitution, like this:

{{subst:Outline city|Moscow}}

You put the above line on a blank page, with whatever city you want in place of "Moscow", and a skeleton of a city outline is produced when you save the page, with the city name appearing wherever {{{1}}} was.

At that point, the outline is ready for editing with new topics and sections. Also, the editor working on the page needs to remove any "standard" entries or sections that do not apply to that particular city, like if it has no canals.

I went over the existing city outlines and upgraded the Template:Outline city with headings and topics from them, for ease of outline creation. The template has been expanded to include likely headings and topics pertaining to any given city. I'll continue to add more as I come across them.

By the way, it's best to create each new outline on its own draft page, like User:Cote d'Azur/Drafts/Outline of Moscow, so that there is a record of edits made to the article. That way, others can see how the outline was developed, and learn from it. Also, if someone else helps develop the article, their contributions will be recorded and attributed accordingly in the outline's history. When the outline is ready for article space, the whole page is moved rather than cut/pasted, preserving the edit history.

Once all the topics you can find are added to the page, then you use the RedlinksRemover on it, and they are either stripped out or delinked by that script, depending on where they are located in the outline. Red end nodes without annotations are removed, but entries with children are just delinked to remain as part of the tree structure.

I hope you decide to try the above described method of outline creation, for two reasons: first, I believe it will make the process easier and therefore more fun. Second, it would be nice to get someone else's (your) opinion on how the method can be improved.

Pertaining to behind-the-scenes emails, I believe communications about Wikipedia development should remain transparent, for the most part. Feel free to edit and improve the Template:Outline city. Any links that turn red in the created outlines can be easily removed or delinked using RedlinksRemover.js.

I'm plugging away on user scripts to make outline development easier. I finally figured out how to get ViewAsOutline-NavBox.js to force navigation footers into show mode. But, I discovered some nav footers that the script does not turn off the graphical bullets in nor convert into vertical lists. There's hidden CSS in there somewhere, but I'll find it eventuallly. I'll be lucky if I don't go blind staring at the HTML page source as much as I do. :)

One way that may prevent this type of thing from happening again would be to create each new outline on its own draft page, like User:Cote d'Azur/Drafts/Outline of Prague, and when it is ready, move the entire page to article space. That way, other editors could see its development history, and would be less likely to jump to the conclusion that it is simply a copy/paste of another article. When an entire article appears out of nowhere, Wikipedia's vandalism fighters tend to get suspicious. The Transhumanist 02:27, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Another way would be to stop the work altogether. If my work receives unjust speedy deletion nominations, then why should I continue working? An entire article may appear out of nowhere because it was developed in a sandbox. I create articles in my sandbox because it is difficult to write a summary for every edit I make. It was just a nomination, probably by somebody who only looked at the top of the page. The top of all outlines look pretty similar to the tops of the corresponding articles, especially the city outlines, which include the flag and coat of arms up there. Had he looked further down the page, he would have seen the difference. In such cases, I find it easy to forgive speedy deletion nominations. Also, outlines are very easy to get unspeedied (though they rarely get deleted, by any procedure).

As for your reason for using your sandbox, I had no idea. Pretty good way to get around the edit summary thing. You learn something every day. The Transhumanist 13:52, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

I've been thinking about your answer above. The reasons you should keep going are plenty. Here are a few of them:

1) Speedy noms are rare. I've created around 600 outlines, and only got a few speedy noms. Most were declined before I even got to see them. I got more AfD noms than that, and all but one were voted keep. I even found an AfD of an outline that got deleted long before the outline department was created, and I asked at deletion review if they'd resurrect it so we could add it to the collection, and they said yes! The biggest AfD on outlines we've ever had was on the Outline of the history of each US State (50 outlines), and rather than delete, they allowed me to merge them into the state outlines. So, there's not that much to be worried about.

2) Outlines provide a valuable public service. The set of outlines get over ten million views per year, and those are just the ones we can count (online). There are probably around 3 or more times as many people who access Wikipedia offline (using XOWA or Kiwix).

3) Outlines rock!

I added a feature called TrueMatch to StripSearchSorted.js, that makes the intitle feature of Wikipedia's search work correctly.

Hi Cote d'Azur. Please can I ask about your reason for replacing the image of the Northern Facade of Stockholm Palace? The previous image gave a clearer picture of the facade, as there were fewer obstructions blocking the view of it. The newer image is obstructed by the flag poles. In official communications (press releases, websites etc), the rulers of the UAE are given as Ruler of Dubai, Ruler of Sharjah etc. However, Wikipedia has a real problem with 'honorifics', so doesn't like the UAE form of title (His Highness Sheikh Mohammed etc) and may not like to capitalise Ruler - yet Elizabeth II is Queen of the UK with a capital, which would tend to suggest a cap is appropriate for Ruler of Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

Hello, Sdkb. The categories I edited are: Social dance, Partner dance, Contra dance, Square dance, English folk dance, English folk music, and Tango dance. I removed from them articles about British Reality TV shows, goddesses of the seasons, genres of pop music from Cambodia, Cornish words, annual weekend festivals, nonprofit organizations, and a theatre because these are not dances and therefore they belong in other categories. As I interpret it, the categories of social dance or contra dance pertain to the concept of those activities, more broadly construed, not to the actual act of dancing; otherwise, it wouldn't make sense for things like contra dance bands to be nested in the contra dance category. At the very least, I would assume that anyone following the contra dance category would be interested in paying attention to the nonprofit that promotes contra dancing or one of the largest contra dancing events in the U.S. Are you aware of any WP policies that define categories in the way you seem to be interpreting them? Hello, just looking for an explanation as to why you undid my recent edit on List of poisonous plants. My intention was to add a separate column for the plants' common names in the "Other poisonous plants" table in order to unclutter the Description column and mirror the earlier "Poisonous food plants" table; I simultaneously added a few images missing from the Picture column and formatted the Scientific name column to remove the bold type. Can you please elaborate? I'm trying to make a genuine contribution to the article by correcting what I see as an inconsistency in formatting between the two large tables of which most of the article consists, and also by adding images and making other minor improvements to style wherever it seems they are necessary. I'd love to get the opinions of other editors, but responses like "the result brought no improvement" are obviously not specific enough to be of any use. What, specifically, would constitute an improvement to the article, in your opinion? I'm not sure what width you're referring to – the widths of the individual columns or the width of the table as a whole – but, at least in my browser, the formatting changes I introduced appear extremely subtle relative to the current revision. If you were more specific I'd have a better idea of your perspective. I can certainly see how the Common names column I created would initially be unappealing, but ultimately the intended effect was to produce something that looks consistent with the upper table; maybe I'll try to adjust the upper table instead, so that the common names are not in their own column but in the Description column, as with the lower table. In any case the inconsistency bugs me, as well as the fact that the relevant info about each plant's toxicity appears only after an often very long list of common names in the Description column, buried in the middle of the paragraph rather than immediately accessible to the reader. In the future I'll make more effort to test the layout in a number of different browsers, but I believe the existing layout is problematic enough that I intend to continue to test various formatting changes to one or the other table in an effort to find some compromise. Feel free to revert if you don't agree, but please try to share some more detailed explanations and/or suggestions so that a compromise can be reached sooner. –PJsg1011 (talk) 17:11, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Now I'm considering dropping the "Commonly known as..." etc. phrasing from the Common names in the lower table, perhaps also the bold type, if only to be consistent with the upper – what do you think? As for the few remaining missing images, I'm aware that some of these species are so exotic or obscure that decent images specifically featuring their poisonous parts simply do not exist on Wikimedia. I haven't looked at the article you mentioned, but I can give you some general advice. You don't need to be an admin to review an article (or accept proposed changes to an article): read the draft, and if it looks good, you can make the changes. If there were comments (e.g. on a previous version of the draft, or because a maintenance template had been added to the article), make sure they are addressed before you approve the changes or remove the template... otherwise, indicate your concerns on the draft... and that should be it ! Barbasca (talk · contribs) is referring to widespread citation/reference spam by a banned IP on a number of international Wikis. The book 88 notes pour piano solo is used as a ref 431 times on en.wiki alone, and for that reason I've advised Barbasca to take this to WikiProject Spam and ask for advice there. With such widespread international ref spamming it may well be appropriate to delete these refs wholesale and regardless.

Absolutely, and let us know what you find, please. If you look at Wilhelm Kempf, and then go to the Basque, Catalan, Esperanto, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Simple English, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish entries, you'll find that same book again, sometimes as the only ref, and attesting to that he was a pianist; a great 20th Century pianist; and a German pianist. Sometimes students are referenced. In Emanuel Macron the book is a ref for both Macron playing the piano, and that he attended Amiens Conservatory. In other languages the book is a secondary or tertiary ref for this fact.

BTW, I got the number of pages where the book is referenced in en.Wiki wrong, it is 211 times. However, if you go down just the first page, it is surprising how often "p. 51" appears. That list of 211 entries likely tells you more than it does me. If the book is a worthwhile reference, then it should continue to be listed. I don't have a dog in this fight, I'm simply allergic to spam unless it comes in a can.

What this means is that, unlike Wikipedia policies, MoS is not mandatory. Further several arbitartion cases have established without a doubt that editing to enforce MoS is not an exception to the policies against WP:edit warring.

I've noticed you have modified the lead in several articles that are lists of compositions by classical music composers, specifically by changing this:

resulting in the link to the parent composer biography article being in bold. This is strictly prohibited by MoS: no links in bold. This applies to the lead as well as the main text. The way the text stood before was acceptable under MoS, which states that it's okay to quote only part of the page title in the first sentence of the lead.

There have been a lot of arguments, actually out-and-out bloody fights with several people getting severely injured, over this dumb issue in the classical music composition lists. That list project consensus in the past has been to make all lists consistent with "list of compositions" in bold, followed by "by" non-bold and then the composer name wiki-linked but not bold. You would do best to not tamper with this style.

I see you have changed quite a few of them, mostly last December, around Christmas day, and nobody's corrected them. Perhaps you could go through and revert your edits please, as it's a lot of trouble for us to do it. In any case, don't do any more links in bold, on any pages because it does violate MoS. What is better about section headers titled "List" and "Destroyed arches" versus headers titled "Remaining arches" and "Destroyed arches"? Why do you think it is always used? Of the 28 list articles in Template:Ancient Roman architecture lists, only one uses "List" as a section header and that is excused by that article having just a single section, unlike this one. List of Roman triumphal arches has two lists in separate sections, but only one is being called "List". If we follow the pattern of the other list articles, neither section should. The section headers should describe their contents in a way that distinguishes them from the other sections in the article. If you would rather change the section header to something other than "Remaining arches", that's fine with me, but "List" is insufficient. AmateurEditor (talk) 07:53, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

My observation is that Wikipedia has many overlapping articles on Narcissism. Narcissism and Narcissistic personality disorder cover the same subject matter.

After reading most of the many sub articles it seems to me that they are serving more to confuse than enlighten. Many articles lack context.

Wikipedias's Borderline Personality Disorder article is possibly a good model to follow for NPD.

It's something for us all to think about.

I have been working on prehistoric UK articles: typically chambered cairns, old churches and assorted tombs. I noticed the "List of Oldest Buildings in Scotland" article. The lede looks like it needs a re-write. I am wondering if tombs should be included in a "list of buildings" or should they have their own article, given the definition of a building in the current lede? Should the List be re-named "List of Oldest Structures in Scotland"?

Who would be the best to decide that? An archaeologist, a senior editor like yourself who has contributed to the article? Lots of questions. No answers. I would love to get your opinion on the article and I can work on cleaning up dead links if needed. MauraWen (talk) 21:12, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Capitalisation of "senate" and "republic" is very inconsistent across Wikipedia articles. I don't really care one way or the other (though with a mild preference for "senate" because that is what most modern books -- that I have encountered -- on the topic use; see also this on-going discussion). Citing Roman Senate is not dispositive: "senate" outnumbers "Senate" in that article anyway (69 to 37 according to senate[\. ,] vs Senate[\. ,]). They must have some encyclopedic value and good quality, because about 85 of them have been promoted here to featured picture status. The article has been protected due to vandalism, so I cannot restore the stable version. Could you please restore it and patroll it during some time, and also patroll Guidobaldo da Montefeltro –another page vandalized by this LTA, altough not been protected yet–, which I also restored to its stable version recently? I'm still working on outlines as I find the time. I hope you are too.

Here's a page I created for tracking outline drafts, that shows the date of the latest edit for each. Drafts that haven't been edited in 6 months get deleted. This list lets us see if any drafts are getting close to the 6-month danger date. Once an edit is made to an outline draft, the date for it in this list automatically updates.
