Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Wikipedia:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

Archive bot
Hi TonyTheTiger, hope you're doing well. I saw your question at admin noticeboard, I don't know if you're still looking for an answer, but worth checking out User:InternetArchiveBot. In the interface, if you tick the box "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)", then it will add all existing archives to the article, rather than just add archives for dead links, or presumed dead links at least. This is what most editors use it seems, although notably does not actively engage in archiving per say. Hope that helps. CNC (talk) 00:20, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Chicago Open Housing Movement
Hello. Noticed you mentioned in a 2024 discussion that you had not heard of James Bevel. His initiating and directing the 1966 Chicago Open Housing Movement (lowercased, of course, on Wikipedia) brought him directly into the flow of Chicago history, and then he lived in Chicago for much of his life. The 1966 Chicago Freedom Movement had other leaders who do not as yet have articles (Kale Williams, David Jehnsen), and the movement is usually said to have been unsuccessful when the opposite is true. An interesting part of 20th century Chicago history. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:17, 27 February 2025 (UTC)

Basketball RfC
Hey, thanks for your contribution to the RfC at WT:NBA. The thing is, I forgot to clarify in the proposal that it was supposed to be for the lead. If it isn't too much trouble, do you think you could go back to your comment and edit it to specify if you want it in the lead, or just in the legacy sections of the articles? - Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2025 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
- Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
- Administrators can now restrict the "Add a Link" feature to newcomers. The "Add a Link" Structured Task helps new account holders get started with editing. Administrators can configure this setting in the Community Configuration page.

- The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
- The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.
- South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as

Tony, we recently fell out over infobox parameters, but to say I am still 100% behind your drive to get Campbell's Soup Cans back to FAC. It has huge traffic, and also I think you have done very very well here, especially in the last few weeks, its nearing a gripping read, and would be proud to see it eventually pass. I have to admit your "push through at any cost" approach is off-putting, but your article work is often impressive. Ceoil (talk) 11:31, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- User:Ceoil, WP has a vast array of ways to contribute and everyone has their strengths. Campbell's Soup Cans is getting better. Many elements of needed work on it are outside of my expertise. It will take a team effort. I am happy to see your attention to it as I improve it. The article is definitely headed in the right direction.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:21, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
- User:Ceoil, Also not sure if you are following at Wikipedia_talk:Vital_articles#How_important_are_VAs_for_biographical_subject_infoboxes. But there you will find request for art expertise in my latest set of posts.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:34, 26 August 2025 (UTC)

A beer for you!
| I know that getting involved at ANI can be stressful. I personally think it was a bit of an overreaction by that editor, to say the least, and I wanted to offer a beer metaphorically. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 22:58, 20 September 2025 (UTC) |
- User:GeogSage, hey thanks for the thoughts. I know we interact in a forum that requires opinionated participation. I am sure we are both trying to make things better from our own perspective. Glad to see you bring about a lot of ideas and hope you don't get fed up with VA. This was the wierdest thing to be at ANI for. Usually, when I am called there for my actions I feel like everyone is coming down on me. In this case, the situation was a little bit off base and I haven't felt any heat (fingers crossed). I don't think IPs should have a say at VA, and my actions were from that perspective. I am glad this situation is one that I can review with a beer (even a metaphorical one).-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 02:24, 21 September 2025 (UTC)

Here's another table pic with a bird in the center and friends around it for you to enjoy. - I have Helmut Lachenmann on the main page, on his 90th birthday, my story, of course, who was featured already in a 2010 hook around a birthday ;) - Today is also the birthday of Jerome Kohl - many reasons to be thankful! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:22, 27 November 2025 (UTC)

Template:S&P 500 companies
What is your plan for Template:S&P 500 companies? It seems hopelessly large for a navbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:46, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
- User:Jonesey95, Having just created Lumentum Holdings, I plan to deploy it the same way Template:S&P 400 companies is deployed. I got too busy yesterday to do so.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 12:53, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
- That one is also too large. Have you considered using categories instead? Categories seem like a much more logical fit for this sort of loose grouping of otherwise unrelated companies. Both of these navboxes fail WP:NAVBOX items 1, 3, and 5. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:10, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
- Are you sure you are applying NAVBOX correctly. Most templates at Category:Stock market index templates and its subcats would fail per this, including the other major indexes such as Template:FTSE 250 Index constituents, Template:KOSPI 200 and Template:Nikkei 225.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:20, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
- User:Jonesey95, P.S. I was planning to deploy before Lumentum enters the index on March 23 should we move this discussion to someplace with more eyes like WT:FINANCE or WT:BUSINESS.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:38, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
- Feel free to move this discussion to somewhere more visible. I think if this template were nominated at WP:TFD, it would be deleted per WP:NAVBOX items 1, 3, and 5. (quoting: 1. All articles within a template relate to a single, coherent subject; 3. The articles should refer to each other, to a reasonable extent; 5. If not for the navigation template, an editor would be inclined to link many of these articles in the See also sections of the articles.) – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:18, 17 March 2026 (UTC)

Regarding your nominations
Hey there Tony. Just some advice regarding your future nominations: please be sure that your hooks have a neutral point of view and should not read like promotional material. That is, they should not read as if they are advertising a company or product. Simply stating facts also does not work as hooks: hooks need to introduce information that makes readers want to read the article and learn more. I would suggest reading Theleekycauldron's essay on what makes a good hook for advice.
Finally, when writing articles about companies, please be sure to use third-party sources whenever possible, and limit the use of primary sources and non-independent sources to uncontroversial or non-contentious material. Please also avoid relying on them too much in writing the article. Thank you. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:02, 21 March 2026 (UTC)

Hey Tony,
It seems like Michigan's win was tentatively left out of ITN due to incomplete prose in the national championship game article, in case you were interested in salvaging it. Cheers, JTtheOG (talk) 04:10, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
