TFL notification for January 2025
Hi, PresN. I'm just posting to let you know that List of pilosans – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for January 27, 2025. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 22:33, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Wikipedia:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

"you can't just declare that it wasn't released for the PS2 because you don't like it..."
But my edit desc is: "first non exclusive was beautiful katamari. That's X360. That was... 10 years ago? 15? This game is for the people".
You being the editor that created that page doesn't give you a privilege to undo works of others, even if you don't like the edit. the edit is valid. The game was developed for PS2 for 2 games, and it says so in their entry, but saying the entire series is for it is plain wrong. please read WP:OWN. 85.250.17.30 (talk) 09:49, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
List of Crystal Dynamics video games 2: Electric Boogaloo
Heyo, you may or may not remeber that we briefly talked about what to do with List of Crystal Dynamics video games some time back. While the main article is now a GA, the listicle remains in very poor shape. Since I currently do not (and likely won't soon) have the time for big rewriting projects, are you still interested in taking this one on? Regards, IceWelder [✉] 21:41, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
- @IceWelder: Probably not, to be honest. I made it more clear last year what games they had been a publisher for in the 90s, and I just replaced one odd ref, but I don't think I've ever played any of their games so I'm not that invested in the list. I'd be willing to swap it over from the current template structure to something more like List of Blizzard Entertainment games if you want, but I'm not interested at the moment in tracking down refs for exact release dates and collections/compilations releases which would be the next, lengthy step to bring it in line with that list. --PresN 01:41, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
Donald Mustard
Hi PresN, I noticed that you work on many gaming-related articles, including Infinity Blade. I have created a draft about Donald Mustard, video game industry veteran and creative director behind the Infinity Blade trilogy. Since I work for AGBO, where Mustard is now a partner, I'm not publishing the article directly. Would you please review the draft in my userspace (User:SarahCaruso/Donald Mustard), editing as you see fit, and move it to mainspace? I'd appreciate it, thanks! SarahCaruso (talk) 21:12, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- @SarahCaruso: Hi, unfortunately I'm not comfortable moving the article to mainspace; the way it's written right now is like an advertisement for Mustard, with puffed up phrases like "led the game to its iconic status within pop culture". It manages simultaneously to not give details on what he actually did in the games he had a direct hand in, but also ascribe everything in Fortnite to him, and I can't trust the sources you used to back that up- you said "He also initiated the creation of live events in the game", which first of all is awful corporate-speak, but the source you used never says he did that, just that he was the CCO of Epic and that also Fortnite "became known for cultural crossovers". So, in order to feel comfortable moving it to mainspace, I'd have to rewrite half of it and check every source, and that's too much. Mustard is notable enough for an article, but I don't think this is the one. --PresN 13:52, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your feedback, PresN. I've noted your points and will rethink the approach to the draft and rewrite accordingly, to the best of my ability. I hope you'll be willing to take another look once I'm finished.
- To relate to some of your comments, I ran into two challenges when creating the draft and wonder if you may have any guidance: First, much of the details of Mustard's specific roles in the games can only be found in RS in interviews, which I intentionally avoided as I know it's frowned upon to reference too many non-independent sources. Would you suggest including some and noting in the text that it's a personal account (e.g., "According to Mustard...")? And second, many of the articles about Mustard tend to take a hagiographic tone, so I tried to walk a fine line of avoiding excessive praise while keeping as close as possible to what's expressed in the sources. I realize that I need to work harder to avoid the puffed up tone even if the RS frames him that way.
- Regarding the sentence in the draft about his creation of live events, I want to point out that the Axios reference does cover this ("Mustard also led work on building dramatic, live events in Fortnite that all players would witness at the same time"). I feel it's important to note this because, while I accept your point about "corporate-speak," I put a lot of effort into checking that all the content passes verification, and I want to make sure you and others here recognize that I'm editing in good faith.
- I'd appreciate any input and will be back in touch once I've updated the draft. Thanks again. SarahCaruso (talk) 19:10, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- @SarahCaruso: Alright, I felt bad about it because he really should have an article and you did a very good job of one overall, and I appreciate that you tried to tone it down (and that articles about him are pretty hagiographic, as you say), so I did some editing on it and moved it to mainspace. What you proposed about sourcing his specific roles to interviews and attributing it to him in the text is perfectly fine; I've watchlisted the article so if you have any proposals just put them on the talk page and I'll add them in without you having to wait around forever. --PresN 02:20, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, PresN! I appreciate your time and continued guidance. I will post any future suggestions at the article's talk page. SarahCaruso (talk) 01:46, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

Ángel (The King of Fighters)
With help from KungFuman I managed to create an article for Ángel (The King of Fighters). Sadly, I am having problems with my monitor and the old one I am using can't let me upload nonfree images in Wikipedia for some reason. If possible, could you upload the infobox image for the character? This might be the best image for the character since it's a concept art made by the most famous SNK artist, Eisuke Ogura, and can easily be found in the wiki or an artbook. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 18:21, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Tintor2: Not clear on how a monitor could affect uploading non-free images? But done in any case. --PresN 19:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. You see, two weeks ago my monitor was nearly burning and I sent it to repair. When I found the older monitor, I found that for some reason Wikipedia doesn't allow me to upload images for some reason so I also asked in Discord a user to upload a picture of Ryu Hayabusa as I was trying to expand on his notability. WikiCup 2025 March newsletter
The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,168 round points, mainly from 4 featured articles and 4 good articles on old military history, in addition to an assortment of GA and FA reviews.
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, mainly from 2 FAs, 2 featured lists, 8 GAs, and 16 Did You Know articles mainly on historical topics.
BeanieFan11 (submissions), with 866 round points from 20 GAs, 23 DYKs, and 2 In the News articles primarily about athletes.
Sammi Brie (submissions), with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
Hey man im josh (submissions), with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
MaranoFan (submissions), with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Currently, i have Wii U GamePad nominated for GA, but could you help get List of Wii U games for featured list? Thanks. TzarN64 (talk) 01:42, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- @TzarN64: I did some accessibility fixes on the table since I'm well-versed in them, but I'm not going to work on the list beyond that. It's going to be a massive amount of work to find sources for the release dates for ~800 games in 4 regions, and I'm not particularly interested in the Wii U. --PresN 02:05, 29 March 2025 (UTC)

Election box candidate no party no change
Hello, I noticed that you changed a part of {{Election box candidate no party no change}} to include a missing rowscope. I'm not sure if this is what is causing a massive change in the template, but I've noticed that the election box now doesn't match with other types of election boxes, as it now has a dark grey and bolded part instead of having a lighter grey and non-bolded part with the rest of it. Compare these two:
| Candidate | Votes | % | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firstname Lastname | 00 | 00.00 | |
| Firstname Lastname | 00 | 00.00 | |
| Total votes | 00 | 00.00 | |
| Party | Candidate | Votes | % | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Independent | Firstname Lastname | 00 | 00.00 | |
| Independent | Firstname Lastname | 00 | 00.00 | |
| Total votes | 00 | 00.00 | ||
I'm not sure if this was the intended result, but I personally don't think it should be different for these two. Especially since the "winning candidate" isn't differentiated anymore. reppoptalk 20:49, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Reppop: Sorry about that, I don't think I realized how many variations of election boxes there were last night. I've added a bit more to ensure there's no visual change; I don't think that's ideal but it's way better than a mishmash of visual styles. --PresN 22:13, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- It being centered is still bothering me since it still visually doesn't match with the other election box, I think you should also fix that to be flush left. reppoptalk 22:54, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Reppop: Done. Really obnoxious that wikimedia applies extra styles to row headers, and also different ones depending on if it's the "first" cell in the row. --PresN 23:02, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- Could you take a look at your other changes for the other election box templates? I noticed on this page that {{Election box candidate with party link no change}} is now centered, and doesn't match with the other templates above. reppoptalk 18:24, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

Peer review request
Hey PresN. I hope whatever you're doing is going great. Perhaps this message will be a little corny, but with your experience with FA indie games, I think it'd be great to send this to you.
For over a year now, by the time I had only garnered a couple hundred edits, I've been working on the article Rain World, an indie game very special to me, as it's now my favorite video game of all time. I've never played Outer Wilds and don't know much about it, but I can tell from the passionate introductory paragraph in your FAC for the game, it is likely I feel very similar feelings to Rain World.
Though I've been making gradual edits on the page for a while, around January 2025, I had read your FAC for Outer Wilds, then Super Meat Boy, Tunic, and Doom 1993. I think your work on those articles had inspired me, because I started reading up on FA articles and essays about the criteria. I hadn't edited Rain World in a while at that point, but I started having some ambitions. I have been reworking the article for over a month now. I've done my best to find the most sourcing I can and making great prose. I don't want to say the article is ready for FAC in case I manage to jinx myself (especially considering I have never nominated even a GA before), yet I have already asked a few other editors to look over it, and they haven't brought many objections so far.
Now, I'm starting to have hopes that this will appear on the main page one day as my first high-quality work on an article. I've opened up a peer review here for further comments and it has yet to receive feedback. Considering the absolutely baffling amounts of FA's and FAL's you've written, I think your advice would help me out a lot. Of course, if you don't want you, you don't have to review this.
Thanks for reading. Good luck with your future content. Tarlby (t) (c) 05:03, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
WikiCup 2025 May newsletter
The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
BeanieFan11 (submissions) with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles, 28 Did you know articles, and one In the news nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
Thebiguglyalien (submissions) with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) and Grace Coolidge, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
History6042 (submissions) with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
Arconning (submissions) with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. World Figure Skating Championships
Good Evening... I'm sorry to bother you. I noticed that you have promoted some articles to FL status tonight. Any chance World Figure Skating Championships will be among them? I just garnered what I believe to be a third support this morning. Thank you so much for your time! Bgsu98 (Talk) 00:52, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Bgsu98: Still needs a source review, and you said you were going to get to the points that Toadspike raised, so it'll probably get promoted in the next pass through. --PresN 03:37, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response. I address Toadspike's points. I have seen where other articles need a source review; what is involved in that? Bgsu98 (Talk) 11:34, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2025 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!
May 2025
Welcome, and thank you for your attempt to lighten up Wikipedia. However, this is an encyclopedia, and articles are intended to be serious, so please don't make joke edits, as you did to Outer Wilds. Readers looking for accurate information will not find them amusing. If you'd like to experiment with editing, please use your sandbox instead, where you are given a certain degree of freedom in what you write. Nice Easter egg. MimirIsSmart (talk) 09:51, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- You may not realize this, having only been here for a year, but it is considered pretty rude to slap template messages on established editors. --PresN 11:42, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- I apologize for this, but I intended this to be humorous and something to be laugh about. MimirIsSmart (talk) 11:55, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
Extracting parts of free images
Hi there. I've been trying to tone down nonfree images of some articles and noticed this free image of Kyo Kusanagi (the character's design has changed several times since his introduction) used to promote a game here. I want to extract Shinkiro's illustration (heavily discussed in promotion) in a similar example to what people did with Hideki Kamiya's free image but I have no idea how I can do it or if I am capable of to begin with. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 14:11, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Tintor2: Eh, that's a free image only because the cover of the game isn't the central subject of the photo (though that's pretty subjective). Cropping it to just the cover removes that, and you just have an angled photo of a non-free image. --PresN 19:07, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. Also, there is a doubt I had about Kyo's article. Do you think some parts from reception are worth removing? I tried removing reviews but I can't tell if some sources are kinda useless or pointless. The fact that the article uses 191 references bugs me similar to when I revised Dante from Devil May Cry with another user. Cheers. Tintor2 (talk) 21:59, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Tintor2: Ah, I think you misunderstood- there's no way that crop can be a free-use photo on commons. Taking a photograph specifically of a copyrighted artwork doesn't transform it into a non-copyrighted thing.
- As to the reception, I don't have an opinion. It's not too long so it wouldn't be my priority to change. I'm baffled as to how that article has 191 references as well- somehow every references is used only once or twice? Like, every single fact is cited to a different source. That feels like bad editing- if there's a good source that covers a bunch of stuff, why would you limit it to one sentence and then base the rest on tweets and weaker sources? I'm more concerned that there's things cited to non-RSs that could have been cited to an RS already used in the article. --PresN 22:47, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. I removed the image and tried toning down the weakest sources. The only tweet I left involved a related artist who often worked for the series. It's one of the first articles I edited so I'm trying to polish it especially due to recent changes about notability guidelines. Cheers Tintor2 (talk) 23:17, 10 May 2025 (UTC)

Explanatory sentence at List of chiropterans
Your edit at List of chiropterans really caught my eye. I think a similar sentence should probably be on every list of species. I'm less active on Wikipedia than I once was, but at User:SchreiberBike/sandbox#Inclusion criteria for List of organisms of Place I've got a list of things I was working on along those lines. If you've got other ideas or would like help implementing them, I'd love to work with you. Keep up the good work. SchreiberBike | ⌨ 22:08, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- @SchreiberBike: I agree- I added it to there (and every mammal list I've done) because a reviewer suggested it at the FLC for List of glirids, as they didn't understand how the parentheses worked, but I also saw someone else ask for the same thing at their List of insect orders nomination, so I think most readers have no idea why some authorities get parentheses and others don't. --PresN 22:34, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

Question
How is mecc.co a only hobbyist fan site when it has a strong connection and has worked with MECC staff members, as seen in their about info. : "This website is a production of the Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange (A.P.P.L.E.) User Group in coordination with the original CEO of MECC, staff", doesn't it lean towards reliability? Despite that, not only mecc.co but the journal Call-A.P.P.L.E also reported 80 million copies of The Oregon Trail. Kazama16 (talk) 23:24, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Kazama16: The Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange is a hobby group, not a publication with editorial policies. Mecc.co is a hobby site run by Bill Martens, again not a publication with editorial policies. Call-A.P.P.L.E. is a fanzine, not a journal; it's a pdf Bill Martens puts out monthly, not a magazine with independent journalists and editors and fact-checking, much less an academic journal with expert oversight, no matter what the wikipedia article on it says. If the source had been an interview with the original CEO of MECC where the CEO said that the 1985 version of The Oregon Trail sold 80 million copies, I'd accept it. I'd think it was pretty far-fetched, but I'd accept it. Even if it was an interview in a hobby blog/fanzine. But that's not what this is- this is one dude out in Seattle, who is friends with a guy who maybe could remember what the sales numbers were, saying offhand in a blog post a number that no one else has ever said for the sales of a game he had nothing to do with and not saying where he got that number from. That's just not a reliable source. --PresN 01:28, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

Wikiproject markup advice
Hi PresN, many thanks for all the help with everything yesterday! Wanted to double check this with you to make sure before changing anything. Currently I use the markup on WP:Ukraine SIA-Class talkpages:
{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI|1=
{{WikiProject Disambiguation}}
{{WikiProject Ukraine|importance=low}}
{{WikiProject Cities}}
}}
I based using "SI" on how WP:Military history does it, though I noticed that they add the class param twice: (example from Talk:Battle of Oslo)
{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI|
{{WikiProject Military history|class=SI|Nordic=yes}}
}}
For WP:VG, the markup has List-Class for the banner and "SIA" instead of SI for the WP:VG template. I was thinking of having it so WP:Ukraine also uses "SIA" though wondering if you'd have any recommendations or insight about this. Guessing it doesn't make too much a difference but thought it would be good to check in case. Dan the Animator 17:34, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- Also wondering if the |1= markup is necessary since I noticed WP:VG has it but WP:Military history doesn't. Dan the Animator 17:35, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- 1) @Dantheanimator: I don't think it matters too much about SI vs. SIA, though I've mostly seen it abbreviated SIA so that's what I went with for video games. Note that your Ukraine classmask right now only supports "SIA" as a value; if you want to support other forms you need to add e.g. |SI=SIA or |SETINDEX=SIA.
- 2) 1= is not necessary; by default for any template the first "unnamed" parameter is considered "1". That's not a wpvg thing to use an explicit |1, I think some people just write template calls oddly.
- 3) Your markup above doesn't work, which is why you're having to manually add Category:SIA-Class Ukraine articles. Putting "{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI" is treated exactly the same as if you had put "{{WikiProject banner shell|class=List" - bannershell just treats SI or SIA as synonyms for list, and it passes it through as List to the wikiproject category. The Milhist example is right- you need to have "{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI|{{WikiProject Ukraine|class=SIA|importance=low}}}}", e.g. give the WikiProject Ukraine specifically the SIA class parameter. See Talk:Adamivka for an example. --PresN 19:30, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks PresN! Just to confirm, this is the markup I'll use for all the Ukraine SIAs: (using "SIA" instead of SI in the banner just to keep it standardized since it doesn't matter much and would be less confusing for other editors)
{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SIA|
{{WikiProject Disambiguation}}
{{WikiProject Ukraine|class=SIA|importance=low}}
{{WikiProject Cities}}
}}
- Also all the SIAs I've seen use low-importance ratings instead of NA though wondering if NA would be better maybe? Dan the Animator 19:38, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- For VG I went with NA-class, though that was partially to distinguish it from Lists; I think either has an argument to be made for it. --PresN 20:10, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- I was hoping to class them as NA for the same reason so that helps. I'll go ahead and modify the markup based on the above, with a NA importance rating. Also, would it be alright if I messaged you in the future if there's other WikiProject technical questions that come up? Not expecting much of any though there's a few more edits to the WP:Ukraine template I thought of and in general your advice and experience is really helpful. - For VG I went with NA-class, though that was partially to distinguish it from Lists; I think either has an argument to be made for it. --PresN 20:10, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- Also all the SIAs I've seen use low-importance ratings instead of NA though wondering if NA would be better maybe? Dan the Animator 19:38, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
Edit request
The edit notice for the list of best-selling video games has become outdated and hasn't been updated for like 8 years to reflect the current situation. I want to request you to edit Template:Editnotices/Page/List of best-selling video games since I'm unable to because I lack the rights to do so.
This is my proposed text = "This is a data-based article and should be supported by trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy. Sales estimation sites such as VGChartz and Steam Spy are not considered valid sources for this list, as they do not provide verified sales figures or professional estimates. Care should also be taken when citing secondary sources; if they reference a questionable source or an internet leak rather than the official one or themselves, the credibility of the source in question should be evaluated before inclusion." Guide to temporary accounts
Hello, PresN. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Close on FLRC Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award
Just saw your close at Wikipedia:Featured list removal candidates/Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award/archive1. I fixed a couple of the rows, but I definitely have not fixed all of the issues. The overall issue I nominated this article for still remains and the article does not currently meet the FL standards. The other commenter agreed that "many of the descriptions need to be changed", and they haven't been. Regards, PK-WIKI (talk) 18:06, 5 December 2025 (UTC)

Good Morning! I don't know when you're planning to promote some more FLCs, but when you do, could you take a look at my Hungarian Figure Skating Championships? It has three supports, plus the source review. Thank you so much! Bgsu98 (Talk) 15:37, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Bgsu98: Late reply, as obviously I've promoted the list already, but there's no need to alert me/the other coordinators about nominations that are ready to promote- we see them (and have a userscript that summarizes the number of supports as a hint for which ones to look at first), so it's just a matter of getting a chance to do a review pass. Don't worry, I'm not interested in leaving your nominations hanging too long, I know you have more skating lists waiting to go and I'm always happy to see them! --PresN 14:03, 9 December 2025 (UTC)

Thank you today for Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons, introduced (in 2017): "In 1992 id Software created the grandfather of first-person shooter video games with Wolfenstein 3D, and in 1993 they released the canonical form of the genre, Doom. But two years before that, they weren't even id: they were "Ideas From the Deep", a group of employees from Softdisk in Shreveport, Louisiana, who had just figured out a way to make a smooth platformer game on an IBM-compatible PC instead of a dedicated gaming console. And with that concept, they made the strangely-titled Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons: featuring no demons or Nazis, but a child jumping his way through alien-filled levels. Commander Keen launched id as a developer and Apogee Software as a publisher, so while it was never as famous as id's follow-up games, it forms an important bit of video gaming history, as well as fond memories from my childhood. I wrote this article last summer as part of a campaign to get all of the Keen games to GA; I'm now circling back around to them in an effort to boost at least some to FA-level. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did researching/writing it!" - Thank you also for more recent quality content! - I brought Wozzeck to the same page, not by me but I noticed the quality and the centenary. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:04, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
Restructure of List of Ig Nobel Prize winners
Hi! Hope you are well. I think we crossed crossed paths many years ago, and I'm back to working on something that has potential for FLC (as the title suggests). Since I am a bit out of the loop on FLs and it's a fairly time-consuming task, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the itemized list → table restructuring (see any of the years after 2015). About Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/2025-12-17/Interview
I collapsed that discussion because it was not relevant to Signpost, and better suited to any of the other venues I mentioned. It is not about "policing talk pages", but it makes no sense to have extended bickering between two editors on an unrelated topic to dominate the discussion of an interview segment.
Talk pages get collapsed or moved like that all the time, it depends on the rules of the specific Wikiproject (or the wishes of the user, if user talk). It is a simple ask for a talk page on The Signpost to be relevant to The Signpost, not "Why is Polyglotus wrong about their opinions on the article talk page" Soni (talk) 05:27, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

Help with paraphrasing
Greetings. I recently created my first liveaction tokusatsu character article Shotaro Hidari. While I managed to find several sources focused on how the audience view witsh significant coverage I also found a scholar from Oxford making a big analysis about his role in Kamen Rider W. However, it can get really confusing so I have no idea how to properly paraphrase to avoid copyright violations:
- Cervelli, Fillipo (2017). "Ima deshō: the vacuum of immediacy in contemporary Japanese literature and popular culture". Oxford University Academy Research. Retrieved December 24, 2025.
The content is this:
"Following this pattern, the early Kamen Rider series still presented heroes with a defined sense of purpose, a sense of a grand narrative. It is in much later versions, those in the zero nendai and after, that the conflict is no longer portrayed in opposition to a form of recognized evil, but becomes an internal competition to protect the heroes’ proximate surroundings, stressing the necessity to survive in the here and now. This is prominent in Kamen raidā W/daburu (Kamen Rider Double, 2009-2010. Henceforth Kamen Rider W). Here, the two main characters Hidari Shōtarō and the mysterious Philip fight an evil organization by using the morphing belt “W driver” and merging into one Kamen Rider W. What is striking here is that the two no longer fight for an ideal of world justice, but rather to protect their local reality, represented by the fictional town of Fūto. This local community is a circumscribed dimension, because the ideal of protection is anchored to a proximate dimension, and does not take into account the world outside of it. The example of Fūto is relevant because while representing a shifting trend within the world of Kamen Rider, it also represents the ultimate reduction of contemporary superheroes’ ideals to localized realities: The problematic of describing justice/evil in the age of Little People is the expiration of the publicness upheld by the criteria determined by the Big Brother. The fact that your definition of justice/evil and mine don’t coincide is already a given assumption. […] [Kamen Rider W] limits the world to the local community called Fūto, and by representing it as a theme park where one justice is sustained it re-staged the hero ‘protecting world peace.’ That is, so to speak, a degeneration to a ‘small justice.’ [...] Kamen Rider W, not portraying any city whatsoever outside of Fūto, half-consciously removes the biggest problem sweeping through the age of Little People. (Uno, Ritoru 349-351)"
How should this content be pharaprased? I think it would be useful for the character article since it is also an article that has been cited by other writers. Anyways, merry christmas.Tintor2 (talk) 15:19, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Tintor2: Hmm... "Cervelly in blah blah blah noted Shotaro in Kamen Rider W as part of a shift in Kamen Rider stories from fighting for the concepts of justice and goodness against generalized or widespread evils to defending specific locations from specific enemies. He claimed that by remaining in one town and fighting only one evil organization, Shotaro and Kamen Rider do not have to define what justice is or what broader evils in the world are, and therefore risk alienating part of the audience." --PresN 20:08, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here, and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. Caim
I was considering creating an article for Caim from the first Drakengard since there was a lot of big articles focused on the game's narrative primarily while using tools. Still, I'm not confident about it being able to pass newer notability guidelines so far. The sandbox is here. I tried using Google scholars and I found a book that heavily focuses on nearly all of Yoko Taro's works but I wonder if you are also interested. Feel free to edit the sandbox. New VG article announcements
Greetings. I was wondering how articles are flagged to appear in the new article announcements. I feel like, in the past, ones I've started and then added the WikiProject banner to were automatically flagged. I began one for Street Combat recently and it didn't seem to appear. TIA Haitch2PointOh (talk) 15:22, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Haitch2PointOh: I think that one got missed due to a bug that was fixed the following week, due to the article being created and then moved the same day. Adding the banner should be enough for it to be picked up on the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Video game articles by quality log (which it was), and then my script uses that page as a base to generate the report. Sorry for missing this article; let me know if it misses an article of yours again and I'll track down what's happening. --PresN 15:33, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks. Not a big deal at all. Haitch2PointOh (talk) 15:38, 14 February 2026 (UTC)

Not familiar at all with how Wikimedia Commons works, so apologies for not just fixing it myself. Pladica (talk) 19:10, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Pladica: Hmm, yeah, I could see how the photos were presented "upside down" compared to Strachey's paper, and the cleaned-up image from TCW does seem to be flipped left-right from the original. I'm unclear on why Æ said it was a "modern reproduction"; before he created the article the content was at Early history of video games, which had the image captioned Christopher Strachey's 1952 draughts program on a Ferranti Mark 1, and the original source says the same thing. It looks like it's clearly just a cleaned up photo in photoshop or something, not a photo of a modern screen. In any case, I've uploaded a new version with the board mirrored and spun, and fixed the caption. --PresN 19:43, 14 February 2026 (UTC)

FLs
Will you be promoting any FL's tonight? Bgsu98 (Talk) 00:16, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- It looks like you did! I am sorry to have bothered you with this message, but what had started out as a decent day ended up being a terrible day, and I thought having one of my skating articles promoted might cheer me up. Mission accomplished. 😉 Bgsu98 (Talk) 02:03, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Bgsu98: No worries, I got lost in writing an article all weekend and so never got around to a promotion round. So off with the Swiss, and I'll likely be promoting the Soviet one next time I do a pass through. Always happy to see and promote them! --PresN 02:05, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
@PresN: I'm sorry to be so wishy-washy, but would you be able to undo the closure of the French nomination? Bgsu98 (Talk) 14:57, 19 February 2026 (UTC)

Protagonist of Nier
I nominated Protagonist of Nier. I gave it some touches like cutting some big sections like creations and reception into smaller ones and added some touches for the appearances section. In the Discord group focused on fictional characters, I was recommended to use third party sources for the in-universe sections to make the article for more accessible for users who have no access to the game. Feel free to add anything. If the review has problems, could you be a conominator? I trust you since in the beginning you were the one who made the game GA. I have just finished playing Replicant so I wanted the protagonist to be GA. There is also the suggested source Moore, K. (December 2024). "Eternal sunshine and the "Gestaltized" mind: the broken promise of the posthuman in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139". Journal of Games Criticism. 6 (A). but I really have no idea what to add. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 19:38, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Tintor2: I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm sure it will be fine. --PresN 21:22, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- The thing is that the source I've just left in this talk page might help to improve the coverage when it comes to analysis of the character in the remaster but I don't know what part would be the best to improve it. I guess something about the protagonist's section to Kaine? Tintor2 (talk) 22:15, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- I went ahead and expanded the analysis based on articles that studied the more explicit content from Replicant that weren't in the original 360 game just like how the protagonist's relationship with LGBTQ characters and the impact of ending E. Feel free to revisit it. Also, talking about that, I did find some third party sources talking about Emil's homosexuality so I guess he has potential to have his own article. WikiCup 2026 March newsletter
The first round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As some of you may have noticed, good article nomination reviews now receive 10 points, an increase from 5 points in the previous year, as per a consensus at WT:CUP. This point increase has been retroactively applied to all good article reviews for which competitors have claimed points in this round. Peer reviews, which continue to be worth 5 points, are now listed in the same section as featured article candidate reviews, rather than with good article reviews. Everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned. No other changes to the round-point system have been made for this year.
Round 1 was competitive. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 300 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Bgsu98 (submissions) with 1,467 round points, largely gained from 1 featured article, 5 featured lists, 15 good articles, and 42 FAC and GAN reviews;
Olliefant (submissions) with 1,246 round points, largely from 4 featured lists, 9 good articles, 2 featured topic articles, 4 did you know articles, and 75 FAC and GAN reviews;
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, largely from 3 featured articles, 6 good articles, and 5 did you know articles;
MCE89 (submissions) with 848 round points, largely from 1 featured article, 8 good articles, 1 did you know article, and 32 FAC and GAN reviews; and
Rollinginhisgrave (submissions) with 838 round points, largely from 1 featured article, 8 good articles, 1 did you know article, and 14 FAC, GAN, and peer reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 7 featured articles, 16 featured lists, 2 featured-topic articles, 168 good articles, 13 good-topic articles and more than 50 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 14 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 700 reviews. The tournament points table will be updated within the next few days.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Emil (Nier)
Created Emil (Nier) after finding some strong third party sources that focus on his character including a scholar. Still, the appearances and creation sections might be lacking information. Also, I'm entirely sure why but Emil's homosexuality was not present in the 2010 game so this might a key important part for the creation if you find something about the localization. Help regarding Template:Cite AV media notes
Hi, I'm having trouble figuring out how to cite certain chapters from this 60-page booklet I'm using as a reference in the Tremors (1990 film) article. At the moment I'm using Template:Cite AV media notes with a Harvard citation to cite each chapter, but something tells me that it's not intuitive to do so as I do here Tremors (1990 film)#Media cited (notice how I use the same booklet five times?). So, how do I go about making this work without using the template that much? Nineteen Ninety-Four guy (talk) 08:26, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Nineteen Ninety-Four guy: Hmm. Well, according to how Harvard referencing works, that's correct - you could add James Flowers as the editor (the end of the booklet credits him with the disc/booklet), but each chapter gets its own citation as they have different authors. If you break away from using pure harvard style (and therefore the sfn template), you could put it in once and then manually create the inline refs, like <ref>[[#CITEREFFlower2020|Melville, Jonathan in Flower 2020]], pp. 7–12.</ref>, but that's about it. --PresN 11:44, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
- Ah, so kind of like the APA style. Gotcha. Thanks, Nineteen Ninety-Four guy (talk) 13:07, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
