Question about arbitration
Hey, thanks for moving my edits, I didn't realise I was doing it wrong, the question I have, is if I'm supposed to reply to people in my section, how does that interact with word count, because it's inflating my word count up? Thanks! Icecold (talk) 01:05, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- You start with 500 words. There's some wiggle room you're a little over (<600), that's fine. Anything more and you need to request an extension at Wikipedia talk:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement
- As it stands, it is highly unlikely most admins would bother reading past your initial statement. Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 01:20, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Correct, it adds to your wordcount - you are supposed to keep all your arguments brief and reserve some words for eventual replies. See WP:ARE box at the top of AE.
- You can ask for an extension from admins, who may grant it, but typically only in increases of the likes of 200-500 words. Typically the respondent of an AE request will be granted an extension of ~500 words if needed for a total of 1000 words for their initial reply and subsequent replies to follow up questions by the arbitrators.
- So, your current section at 1,700 words is way over and likely admins will either just ignore your words that are over, or actively collapse/close/remove them.
- If no one has responded to your reply yet, you may refactor it but keep the guidelines on WP:TALK#REVISE in mind. Raladic (talk) 01:21, 18 July 2025 (UTC)

Transgender healthcare and people arbitration case opened
You were recently listed as a party to a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Transgender healthcare and people. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Transgender healthcare and people/Evidence. Please add your evidence by August 11, 2025 at 23:59 UTC, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Transgender healthcare and people/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Party Guide/Introduction. For the Arbitration Committee, Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 06:39, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- @SilverLocust could you please give me some advice? I'm an ARBCOM first timer so want to run some thoughts by you.
- My basic idea for evidence is:
- 1) Setting out the most contentious FRINGE theories / and their proponents (the locci of dispute)
- ROGD,
- Gender exploratory therapy/Gender identity change efforts
- Legal bans on trans healthcare for minors
- SEGM/Genspect/Therapy First as the proponents
- For those, it'd be a mix of links to on-wiki consensus they're FRINGE + MEDRS/RS noting that
- 2) Laying out which editors have tendentiously sought to promote them as described by WP:PROFRINGE
- 1) Setting out the most contentious FRINGE theories / and their proponents (the locci of dispute)
- Workshop wise, I'm a little unsure on proposed solutions. My current ideas are:
- Some kind of 1RR on all trans healthcare articles
- A harsher policy towards WP:PROFRINGE editing / greater scrutiny for FRINGE
- At the core, I'm a little worried about how much weight ARBCOM will give to WP:FRINGE issues.
- Specifically, ARBCOM explicitly focuses on conduct not content. But when the conduct issue is that a group of editors tendentiously civilly push FRINGE content with almost every edit, how does/can ARBCOM handle that?
- My flicker of hope is here is we do have consensus on these things being FRINGE onwiki. Such as SEGM being a group of FRINGE activists who shouldn't be used. Or ROGD having no scientific support.
- I've been looking at WP:ARBR&I as a blueprint for a case on PROFRINGE activism in a topic area
- So I suppose my questions are:
- 1) Will ARBCOM give weight to the underlying WP:PROFRINGE issues or entirely ignore content?
- 2) What's the best method of bringing up things being unequivocally WP:FRINGE / is my proposed evidence format on the right track?
- 3) Are those the kind of workshop decisions that'd make sense here?
- Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 17:04, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi YFNS. I'm allowed to give procedural advice as an arbitration clerk, but not really substantive advice on how best to argue your case or predictions about what the Arbitration Committee will do. Your ideas for evidence and the workshop sound like acceptable, in-scope proposals for the case.
- As an illustration of how the Arbitration Committee has addressed promotion of fringe views or unreliable sources while not deciding specific content disputes, there is the reliable source consensus-required restriction, which was imposed with regard to the topics of the history of Jews in Poland and Lithuania and of Polish and Lithuanian history during World War II. And individual editors can be sanctioned for editing to promote a viewpoint. (For example, in Palestine-Israel articles 5 several editors were topic-banned based in part on "non-neutral editing".) There is also an index of principles that the Committee has included in past final decisions, including some that mention "fringe" or "promot".
- Let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to answer. ~ Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 01:23, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- I thanked you on mobile but it didn't show up, but I wanted to put it in writing anyways so thank you so much for the advice!! Small note - You linked the same org twice and forgot to sign
Hey there, didn’t want to edit it directly myself, so just small note that in Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Transgender healthcare and people/Evidence#Related FRINGE activists/organizations you accidentally linked Genspect twice instead of the third org you wanted to. Also I think all the evidence still needs signatures for the timestamps. Raladic (talk) 19:02, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! Fixed the duplicate and another error I noted but I'm unsure about signatures - the other pages explicitly say to use them, but the Evidence doesn't (presumably due to using a username for the header). @SilverLocust could you please advise? Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 19:39, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- Submissions on the evidence page are usually not signed; either way is fine. But please do put your full username in the section header if not. ~ Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 20:19, 31 July 2025 (UTC)

Hi YFNS The A Wider Lens podcast, is a coversation between gender-critical Stella O'Malley and trans allies Annelou de Vries and Thomas Steensma - neutral and very informative no matter which side of the fence you sit on. I accept Exceptional claims require exceptional sources but c'mon its not supporting some controversial fringe theory. Tiny Particle (talk) 01:05, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
Hi YFNS institutionalize has two meanings
- 1. establish (something, typically a practice or activity) as a convention or norm in an organization or culture. "he institutionalized the practice of collaborative research on a grand scale"
- 2. place or keep (someone) in a residential institution. "these adolescents had more contacts with the police and were charged and institutionalized more often"
My understanding tends to the latter (British English) and yours to the former? Tiny Particle (talk) 01:19, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
It's not worth it to continue engaging, in my opinion, YFNS. SilverserenC 01:28, 16 August 2025 (UTC)

Help with a sociology-related article?
Hi, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at Empathy in autistic people. I read it last night and it bothered me. The content about a "disorder of empathy", the comparison with psychopaths, lacking brain circuits nessecary for empathy etc. It comes across as quite dehumanizing. Is everything in the article really an accurate representation of WP:DUE? My heart wants to believe otherwise. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 15:16, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- Considering the vast majority of the space in that article is spent on discredited theories I'd bet there's some cutting in order. Though this is hardly the only mental health article on wikipedia that presents its subjects in an excessively bad light somehow. --Licks-rocks (talk) 16:41, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- Definitely needs a rework. The fact that the lead includes reference to HFA, which is not a term used anymore, and the otherwise broad use of outdated language (ASD instead of Autism) are fairly indicative of that. The lead should not start with old research and instead lead with the latest understanding, since that has evolved a lot since the beginning that focused on boys exclusively. Devon Price's book (978-1800962927) from earlier this year has a lot of references to more recent research and touches on the topics of the article, so that could probably be a good starting point to find sourcing from.
- As @Licks-rocks mentioned, unfortunately there's plenty of articles in the mental health space that can do with reworks and updates since this area has evolved quote a bit. Raladic (talk) 16:48, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- It's good to know my instincts as a Wikipedian have not failed me here. A lot of this topic area is... very new to me, even if I was vaguely aware of some of it before, like that autism can present differently in women. This article appears to have been translated from the French Wikipedia, so it might be good to make sure it's not just fixed here. Unfortunately, my French is really only good the one way, although I'm trying to improve it. I don't think I'm skilled enough to translate the other way around. I debated putting this on the Arb decision talk page and the section above before ending up here
I echo the thanks above. As (I think) I and others mentioned, your work lays out academic concepts and assembles current events clearly for laymen to understand using high-quality sourcing, and it'd be a shame if there wouldn't be more of it.
I have to say, though, I think you've misinterpreted some aspects of Arbitration. The Void section of your evidence filing lists arguments without providing context of their going against previous consensus. ArbCom rules on conduct issues and is meant to almost disregard personal agreement with content arguments (beyond that of a closer assessing the outcome of discussions a la WP:DISCARD), and an "I do not like" content issue is what the committee seems to have interpreted the section as. Perhaps your evidence filing would have had more persuasion if it focused on how exactly the source discussions were each ignored necessitating the next
.
As seen in previous rulings, when ArbCom puts a remedy on someone, they are not making any judgement of association/lumping in; they're stating that certain behavior was individually sub-par. Just being sanctioned is not meant to label one as the same as others sanctioned (who in this case also received far bigger restrictions). (I think the amount of alternate sanctions worked on and proposed shows your (relatively) high regard even among Arbitrators.) It would be great if we could work on wording that would clarify these Arbitration expectations! (As you can probably tell from this message, I am not very good at articulating...)
Good luck with your extra cap and gown! Aaron Liu (talk) 04:33, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, as an explanation I was looking at WP:ARBR&I as the main precedent, where they did more to address pseudoscience.
- Their FoF on the locus of dispute found
the dispute may be characterised as comprising: (i) consistent point-of-view pushing; (ii) persistent edit-warring; and (iii) incessant over-emphasis on certain controversial sources.
(looking through the case, there were similar pushes by racists to cite FRINGE sources) - One FoF on an editor found:
In essence, this editor has placed undue weight on selected research by A. R. Jensen to promote a point of view.
- I'm, tbh, very dissapointed none of the precedent of that case was considered. Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 14:50, 14 October 2025 (UTC)

Honest suggestion
Just leave it be. You're topic banned (or at least going to be), so you no longer have any influence over it. The arbs have thus far pointedly refused to answer questions relating to what you're intending to ask, viewing it as a content issue. The best thing you can hope for at this point is what you've already got: No reversal of decisions you've had a role in. --Licks-rocks (talk) 22:39, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- Unsure if I'm already topic-banned or going to be lol. Only saw this after posting.
- Frankly, at this point I couldn't care less about the sanctions, I just think that whether or not ARBCOM bans me, it should not be based on saying that I was wrong for respecting an RFC. But defending a non-MEDRS pushing conversion therapy, and a weak MEDRS which disagrees with all others, by claiming it was wrong to say their FRINGE authorship is a factor in its inclusion, hits very different when we had an RFC explicitly saying it does. Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 22:47, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- I understand perfectly what you are trying to do, but arbcom has clearly signalled it isn't interested in discussing that question. This means they can take your question only one of two ways. Either they view your contribution as sufficiently disruptive to warrant overturn, or they don't, leaving you either in the same position we were in before you asked the question, or in a substantially worse one. There simply isn't a scenario where this achieves something you actually want to achieve. Arbcom isn't going to turn around and redo their entire decision the way you want them to this late in the game. Not after they've already spent a bunch of time cutting out little sections of the transgender pie for you to keep editing on, mostly to no avail. --Licks-rocks (talk) 22:56, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- T'was a hail mary to be sure, if anything more for the record.
- They definitely aren't going to overturn a 5-1 decision that already underwent close review fwiw.
- No skin off my back, give it a year or two and we'll have WP:ARBTRANS2 - if admin culture around civil transphobia and pseudoscience doesn't change, we'll end up right back here. After all, this was essentially already the sequel to WP:ARBSEX, which lumped trans people with paraphilias and let a man spend a decade putting pseudoscience into articles about trans people. And with a rise in state sponsored hate campaigns and propaganda, the topics certainly not going to magically get better.
- And between WP:ARBR&I and the RFC on if it's FRINGE to say race is genetically tied to intelligence, there were 10 years of tolerance of polite bigots.
- IDK, my deepest condolences to all LGBT editors who are going to spend the next few years suffering the consequences of this case. Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 23:06, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, your "hail mary" will cause me work if it doesn't go the way you want. And I think I will elect to not do that work, because I have a limited amount of life on earth and I'd rather spent it on something useful like watching paint dry. And if I don't intend to re-run that RFC, I highly doubt anyone else will be willing to either. You are actively and permanently burning both progress you've made and goodwill from other editors here, and I think you're failing to pick up on that message, which is why I am now stating it as bluntly as I possibly can. --Licks-rocks (talk) 23:14, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- Fair enough, my grave is dug and this is probably going to be my last edit in months. I'll take off the spiderman garb and climb down from the building.
- I do want to reassure you though, there's almost no way in hell ARBCOM would overturn that RFC. I don't think they've ever overturned one before, the consensus is clear - one of the most overwhelming RFCs in ages when discounting meatpuppets, and it was already close reviewed. If by some miracle they decide to, at the last minute, overturn it, abandoning all precedent, that would be immediately taken up by any number of other editors. There has been no hint from any arb they think that RFC should be overturned. Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 23:22, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah no I get that, and I'm being more blunt than I need to be, (apologies for that). Just for the record: I like you as an editor and think you do great work. But if there's one thing I'd suggest you work on learning it's knowing when to throw the towel in the ring and just leave things be for a bit. Sometimes all you need to do is allow others to draw the attention to themselves and their anthics. You're hardly the only editor in that case who did something inadvisable when the threat of pending sanctions started getting a little too much, you're just the one I get along with. So here's my advice, worded somewhat less asholishly: let those others draw attention to themselves, give them the stage. Sit back and watch the chaos unfold. --Licks-rocks (talk) 23:32, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think this was a good decision, particularly with regards to the findings of fact about you. But
Sit back and watch the chaos unfold
is good advice, and you should take it. -- asilvering (talk) 06:09, 21 October 2025 (UTC)- Yeah, I agree! it's a disappointing decision. I very much would have liked to see them comment on the POV-pushing angle a lot more and I do think YFNS is right when she says it's going to come up again. They've just pushed the cart down the road. --Licks-rocks (talk) 11:30, 21 October 2025 (UTC)

Your retrospective?
Hello YFNS. For the past few years (since before your name change), I've occasionally kept tabs with your advocacy efforts on this site. I try my best to stay informed on political issues and dynamics, both on Wikipedia internally and elsewhere. I was surprised to see that the system has once again imposed sanctions on your account. The arbcom case is certainly lengthy; do you think you'd be willing to write a retrospective-type essay about your time on Wikipedia and your thoughts on the arbcom case? You could publish it offsite. I'd love to read your perspective, though I understand if you don't have enough time. Koopinator (talk) 19:04, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Koopinator
- I've been mulling it over and deciding whether I should write one, been fairly busy with classes. I previously did an editor reflection for Clovermoss. But at this point, about a year ago me and some other REDACTED friends were attacked, beaten, and hospitalized on account of our REDACTED identity by some bigots cruising through a historically REDACTED neighborhood, so I feel compelled to say at least a little something.
- Wikipedia constantly fails the paradox of tolerance, particularly when it comes to pseudoscience about minorities. We can take Race and Intelligence as an example I'm allowed to speak on:
- In 2010, ARBCOM had a case on the issue WP:ARBR&I
- Impressively, not once does ARBCOM use the word "racist", "pseudoscience", or etc - when referring to a case where half the members argue that white people are genetically smarter than everyone else
- If we look, editors who lost their temper with racists where banned for it
- The closest they came to acknowledging pseudoscientific sourcing was arguing an
editor placed undue weight on selected research by A.R. Jensen
. - They banned racist editors for pov-pushing, battleground editing, etc - but I emphasize, no comment on the racism
- In 2020, the WP:FTN fringe theories noticeboard had an RFC on race and intelligence]
- This concluded
There is consensus that the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is enough of a minority viewpoint in the scientific consensus that it falls under Wikipedia's definition of a fringe theory
- A bunch of editors/SPA who argued it wasn't pseudoscience are still around
- It's important to highlight that a decade has passed between this RFC and the ARBCOM case
- This concluded
- In 2025, FTN debated whether the previous RFC applied because someone argued
Ashkenazi Jewish and Jewish in general are not races, but an ethnicity and ethnic groups
.- I'm sure there are other examples between 2020 and 2025, but that recently popped up on my watchlist
- In 2010, ARBCOM had a case on the issue WP:ARBR&I
- A few real-world facts are pretty relevant:
- Scientific consensus across multiple disciplines has held for decades that the claim that race and IQ are genetically linked is nonsense at best, pure unbridled racism at worst
- There are a number of advocacy groups and journals that push the idea - things like the Pioneer Fund, Human Biodiversity Institute, Mankind Quarterly
- Those groups are reported in all independent sources to be racist charlatans
- Tying this all together - people often try and give a veneer of science to bigotry, they are heavily called out for this in independent academia. These issues travel to Wikipedia, where the pattern looks like this:
- a small group of radicalized bigots band together to push whatever their pet theory is about why some minority is bad/lesser/etc
- normal editors (quite often members of the targeted minority), counter the nonsense, and point out that such theories are FRINGE / bigoted, progressively losing their patience
- Admins do fuck all - it's labelled a content issue and not wanting flack they refuse to label bigotry as bigotry
- The situation grows worse: the bigots attract more bigots, solidify themselves, and keep pushing nonsense. And it keeps being countered, because that's what every normal person does when presented with somebody citing a group of known racists to promote racism
- Eventually, ARBCOM steps into this "intractable" dispute and solves it via:
- banning people on "both sides" (ie, racists and anyone who's been calling BS on them)
- completely side-stepping the underlying issue, people trying to push bigotry (see WP:ALCAPONE)
- The message being clear that bigotry is fine, it's pushing bigotry "uncivilly" that's an issue, the debates restart again - rinse and repeat
- My retrospective? ARBCOM's remit should include some kind of reckoning with real world bigotry and oppression. A group of editors targeting a minority with pseudoscience is not a "content" but a conduct issue. Every solution where ARBCOM sidesteps condemning bigotry and casts a "plague on both your houses" sets the stage for future bigotry. It emboldens bigots to try again politely and it sends a message that opposing bigotry will land you in hot water (a message which is heard a lot louder by minorities). This pattern is not isolated to race and intelligence - all disputes over pseudoscientific bigotry I've seen on WP fit this to a T.
- I think that dealt more with generalized ARBCOM/WP issues than you may have wanted. I will eventually write a retrospective more focused on my own work though. Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 17:00, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
- I totally agree with your point - "ARBCOM's remit should include some kind of reckoning with real world bigotry". When you were blocked, my view was that it followed you experiencing countless harassment incidents for which Wikipedia did not protect you. I recognize some forceful boundary setting from you, but I feel that in the context of you being victimized countless times in a hatemongering context, you had to get assertive, tough, and set practical boundaries. If Wikipedia cannot offer basic protection and enforcement of civility, then when an issue rises to ARBCOM, then judgements have to come in the context of Wikipedia platform failings elsewhere including lack of basic protection and enforcement of civility. I do not think ARBCOm has sufficient data to track, count, and do data visualizations of how much harassment people can experience before they arrive at ARBCOM.
- I do fault individuals on ARBCOM at all, whom I trust to follow their remit and be sincere in using the tools and training they have available. There is a systemic problem here. I see it as you say - "ARBCOM's remit should include some kind of reckoning with real world bigotry". We have a surplus of hostile bigots who attack demographics of people whom we are trying to recruit. The Wikimedia Foundation spends exorbitant amounts of money to recruit editors from vulnerable demographics, who are underrepresented here due to our failure to protect people from low level bigotry.
- I would like to see ARBCOM resourced in a way that better aligns with investments elsewhere to recruit editors, because if we looked at the finances I think we would see that our investment in safety and protection may not match the impact we get from investing in continually recruiting new users into dangerous editing environments. Bluerasberry (talk) 17:26, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
- I concur with basically everything you both say here. Arbcom was way too anxious here to "seem" fair, and as a result I cannot honestly say that I believe their ruling here was a fair one. --Licks-rocks (talk) 21:39, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
- "I think that dealt more with generalized ARBCOM/WP issues than you may have wanted."
- Technically yes, but I'm thankful to have gotten a reply nonetheless. I generally agree tighter rules on racism/queerphobia would do well for the project. I'd love to read the full retrospective if/when you get around to it. Koopinator (talk) 20:10, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

Hello!
Hi, YFNS! It's been a while since we last spoke, and I couldn't help but think of you on this day, so significant in the history of your community. How have you been lately? I really hope that you are doing fine, both here and in real life. Cheers! — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 20:00, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Sundostund Hello! Just seeing this sorry.
- I've been doing good, funny enough that day is always hectic for me lol. This year, I was traveling for work (hence why I missed your message), and one year ago me and a few friends were trans-bashed on it (for which I made a lot of gallows-humor jokes about the day of all days for that to happen).
- Apart from that, you messaged shortly after I was banned, and had just started a doctoral program. So overall good, just ridiculously busy and desperately missing sleeping between work and classes lol.
- Likewise hope you've been doing well, here and IRL! Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 17:09, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hello! Please don't worry about a late reply, it happens to me as well – and not so rarely.
- I'm very glad to hear about you starting a doctoral program; surely, you should be proud of yourself! At the same time, I'm sorry to hear that you and your friends were trans-bashed — on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, above all. It would be an understatement to call that disgusting... Also, I wasn't aware of your ban here. Was it another topic ban, or something else?
- As for myself, I've been doing fine, both here and in real life. I wish the same to you; just keep in mind to find a bit more time for rest/sleeping, between work and classes. Cheers!

Don't leave
Oh, hey YFNS, we haven't talked in a while. I just only noticed the WP:ARBTRANS case. Haven't gone through it in detail, so not sure of the terms; if you can't respond to me cuz that would be a violation, just say, 'cannot comment per the terms' or some such. Number 1 below should be safe. What I wanted to say are a couple of things:
- please don't leave. I know the ban topic is close to your heart, but everyone is multilateral, and you have a fine mind (not to mention tech skills), great knowledge of the P&Gs, and there are tons of ways to contribute. So, don't go. I saw that you have very few edits since it hit the fan, which worries me; I hope that is just a letdown or mourning period after the arb thing, but things will get better. We need you.
- Was there stuff that you feel was left hanging, or some things on your to-do list that you cannot attend to now, that would still be improvements to the encyclopedia? (I'm still thinking of that Trans-history-by-country thing we collaborated on; whatever became of that? [note: don't answer me if that would be a violation]). You can't initiate a request to me (or anyone) to make edits you are banned from making, per WP:PROXYING, but me coming to you to ask about passing the baton on unfinished business that would be of benefit to Wikipedia is not proxying, in my opinion. If there are things like that you might like to pass on to me for further development/completion/release, maybe we can work something out. First thing, would be to make up a list (off-wiki), then either email Arb or go to WP:AE, link this discussion, include your list, and ask them if it is okay for you to pass this stuff on to me at my request. In order to comply with PROXYING, you will probably have to make it clear to Arb that I am soliciting info of possible benefit to Wikipedia, and what you will be passing along is like a black box registered package sent to me via Arb Express, and you will be making no suggestions or requests about what I should do with it. As an example: if the T-hist-by-country thing is on your list, then I would get it without comment from you, and have to figure out on my own how to best make use of it to the benefit of Wikipedia.
Anything here sound interesting to you? You can definitely reply to me about #1, but be more circumspect what you say about #2, or say nothing, and approach Arb instead, to see what is permitted. It is actually #1 that interests me more; we need good editors like you here. So, do your mourning or deal with the anger, or frustration, or whatever it is you are going through now, and then come back when you are ready, and let's talk. Tons of stuff for you still to do here in other areas. I could use some templating help, for example. Hang in there, don't be a stranger! I am looking forward to YFNS 2.0! Mathglot (talk) 09:26, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Mathglot
- It's very good to hear from you! And I appreciate the sympathy and compliments <3
- Regarding 1)
- Don't worry, not going to leave!
- For explanation, I started a doctoral program (with a research focus in the topic I can't name) right after the ban and between work and classes I have very little time for editing when not on break (a situation that should hopefully be resolved in ~1.5 years when I'll have no more classes and get to focus on my dissertation, and possibly teaching)
- The low edit count is also because of my writing style of publishing fully formed drafts ;)
- See https://xtools.wmcloud.org/globalcontribs/Your%20Friendly%20Neighborhood%20Sociologist, I've written two articles and done some image work since the ban anyways! ~100 hours of work worth lol
- Uncounted there, I write all my drafts in emacs org-mode markdown, and spent a few hours over the winter break refining and updating my pipeline so it automatically exports to wikitext (including citations!)
- Regarding 2)
- I'll keep that in mind! Apart from the template I don't think there was unfinished work I left
- For the template, all good to discuss actually! Particularly because at some point I can't remember when, I abstracted it to try and make it generally useful and made the original template rely on it: User:Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist/Template:Regional articles
- It's been so long since I touched it I can't remember where I left off though
- There was, IIRC, an issue with the number of queries - it would make too many calls and crash out at a certain number of rows * columns.
- I did try and rewrite it in Lua for a few hours around the time of creation, but got absolutely nowhere lol. I think converting to lua would be for the best though!
- Always here if you want to chat or want help templating! Just ping me (and keep pinging me every few days if I miss it lol) Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 17:00, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

Article of interest
Hey YFNS, I hope you are doing well. I found this insane article with pretty bad NPOV issues that you might be interested in cleaning up. I added a second paragraph to the lead section, but I thought I'd let the professionals handle it (if you're so inclined). Happy editing, JTtheOG (talk) 20:59, 11 February 2026 (UTC)

Template:Regional articles
This template was moved to your user space by consensus last year because it had no transclusions. You recreated it a month ago, and it still has no transclusions. Rather than speedy-delete it, which I am tempted to do, I thought I would ask you what your plan is. What is your plan? Is there a reason this should not be speedy-deleted as an unused re-creation of a deleted template? Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:26, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Jonesey95, thank you for checking in with me!
- My apologies for not working on it since recreation, between work and classes I've been all over the place and haven't had much time for editing.
- It's not quite a recreation is important context - the old version languished because I couldn't figure out how to make it more efficient and it would crap out when generating relatively small tables so it was fairly useless. The new one's a wrapper for a lua module I wrote so works a lot better and is I think ready to roll out!
- The plan is for me and @Mathglot to run it by some other module/template editors for a final pass than roll it out to various wikiprojects. I asked him about it last time I worked on it but didn't get a response so suppose it's good to ask your advice on that:
Do you have any ideas on how/where to roll this out? I think it's ready to start giving wikiprojects to build with, but wanna put it on a testing noticeboard of some kind if we've got one first.
- Rollout wise, after that final review, I'm planning to first make versions for WikiProject Human Rights and WikiProject Climate Change then going to village pump + automated wikiproject notifications that the template now exists.
- I'm also interested to hear your thoughts on the template/module itself! I think it'll make things easier for a lot of projects and I'm very proud of how I rewrote it
- All the best, Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 20:06, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
Draftifying Draft:Human rights by country
Hi -- I moved Draft:Human rights by country to draftspace as it doesn't appear ready for mainspace yet. Is it trying to evaluate the completeness of each article? If so, that feels more like a project page than a mainspace page. Can you clarify the intent of the page and provide sources? Thanks! I appreciate your contributions! 49ersBelongInSanFrancisco (talk) 06:11, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
- @49ersBelongInSanFrancisco My bad, was so excited to finally get it working and fix the last bug while in a rush and running out of time to work on it that I forgot the initial move location - project page was absolutely the originally planned target. Wikipedia:Contentious populations
I agree as far as:
- The current system makes it difficult to create a perfectly balanced and innocent article (for example, Palestinian law), and
- The current system also allows unsourced or poorly sourced stubs (usually about some Kurdish warlords from the 19th century) to have the articles removed. Bearian (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
Blocked
You have been blocked for one week as a result of this discussion. This block cannot be reversed without the consent of the Arbitration Committee. Izno (talk) 02:01, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- Glad this waited until the night I got back from vacation and not before - a coincidence probably but a fortunate one, whichever case I appreciate the timing. Don't worry, I'll behave, I have no plans to appeal this. I'll continue to stick to articles on NYC tenant history and racism in the Americas on enwiki, and leave the GAs on my area of academic expertise, the one I've been studying for 5 years and am now in a doctoral program studying, to other wikis, but I'll know better than to dare speak on systemic bias on Wikipedia in any form.
- It isn't the best look that ARBCOM (not the community) voted and decided to block me (at least not unanimously), and said only they can reverse it, for the fact that I wrote an article critical of ARBCOM's general treatment of various minorities which disclosed I'm a minority banned from the topic of it. I redacted which, and even removed the disclosure entirely no less, but c'est la topic ban violation.
- The irony isn't lost on me that some initial fuck-ups when I started editing led to a ban, I became a better editor, the community near unanimously unbanned me and the community saw no issues with my work since (including 2 GAs), hell a doctoral program accepted me largely on the basis of my work here, and yet I end up banned again. Based not on the community discussing it, but a 6-3 vote and FOFs ruling on whether content is WP:FRINGE in ways contradicting the multiple RFCs by the community which were 3-1 counting banned meatpuppets, 5-1 not counting them. And now blocked, for having the gall to disclose a ban in an essay discussing nearly every systemic bias on Wikipedia but the one I'm banned from discussing. - Personally I feel this ban is more punitive than preventive, although I do feel that generally it's your talk page behaviour that gets you in trouble rather than your editing and as you mention your editing is usually very high quality and I think not having that (and your breadth of knowledge on sources) in this topic area is a loss. Either way I hope you enjoyed your holiday, I hope your studies go well and I hope you continue to improve Wikipedia. LunaHasArrived (talk) 13:54, 1 June 2026 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I concur entirely with your assessment and am deeply dissapointed in arbcom for this decision, but I'm afraid that won't stop them from continuing to over-enforce until it leads to a ban, based entirely on them looking at their own previous handed-out-in-error bans and assuming that means you've been misbehaving when really you've just. Been off doing useful things.che sarà, sarà. --Licks-rocks (talk) 12:07, 1 June 2026 (UTC)
