PT Anas Nasional Sejahtera (ANS) is a Indonesian bus company based in Padang, West Sumatra. Founded by Anas Sutan Jamaris, a former cigarette trader and distributor from Agam Regency, he pioneered the passenger transportation business in 1964 under the name Panca Bakti before establishing PO ANS in 1972 with the slogan "Safe, Comfortable, and Arrive at Your Destination". This bus company has grown into a large company with a network of intercity and interprovincial routes across Sumatra to Java. ANS is known as one of the pioneers of intercity and interprovincial buses that serve the Minangkabau people's migration tradition. In addition to intercity bus services, ANS also develops its business through its subsidiary, Nyaman Holiday, which focuses on tourist buses with a more flexible fleet and comprehensive facilities.
ANS cannot be separated from its founder, Anas Sutan Jamaris, an entrepreneur from Balingka, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. Born into a humble family, his life has been full of struggles from a young age. He was accustomed to working hard as a door-to-door hawker to support his family's finances. From this small business, he then tried to expand into a new business, namely selling cigarettes, which became the starting point for his success in the business world.[1][2]
His success in the cigarette business enabled Haji Anas to purchase a truck to support the distribution of his merchandise to various regions, including Medan City, North Sumatra. This is where he began to learn about and understand the world of land transportation. The freight transport business he started grew rapidly, allowing him to gradually increase the number of trucks in his fleet. This experience later became a strong foundation for him to enter the passenger transportation business later on.[1][2]
Anas's first steps in the passenger transportation business began in 1964 when he opened an intercity bus within the province (AKDP) service with the Padang–Bukittinggi route. Initially, he named his business Panca Bakti'. During the approximately eight years running this route, he gained extensive experience in managing passenger transportation, from operations to service. This experience became an important asset before he undertook a larger expansion.[3][4]
In 1972, Anas undertook a major transformation by establishing PO ANS, an acronym for his own service slogan, "Safe, Comfortable, and Arrives at Your Destination." This company later evolved into PT Anas Nasional Sejahtera. Since then, ANS has expanded its intercity and interprovincial (AKAP) services and expanded its route network to various regions in Sumatra and Java. During its heyday, ANS buses even served very long routes, from Banda Aceh City in Aceh to Denpasar City in Bali. [4]
As one of the legendary POs in West Sumatra, ANS is known as a pioneer of long-distance travel for the Minangkabau people, particularly to facilitate those who migrate. ANS buses in the early days even had to pass through difficult terrain, such as unpaved roads, river crossings, and areas prone to mugging.[5] As time goes by, ANS continues to innovate in improving services. This company offers various service classes, from economy class to executive and Royal Executive with modern facilities such as AC, comfortable seats, entertainment, to toilets. This innovation makes ANS able to compete with other bus companies and maintain its reputation as one of the leading buses in West Sumatra.[4] At its peak, redBus awarded the Most Favorite Sumatra AKAP award to ANS on November 15, 2025.[6] After Anas's death in 2022, the leadership of PO ANS was continued by the next generation of his family; Currently led by Wellian Anas.[4][7]
Fleet

ANS is known as one of the legendary operators from West Sumatra that continues to rejuvenate its fleet. In recent years, ANS has consistently presented new buses with a combination of premium chassis and modern body. For chassis matters, ANS is known to only use one manufacturer, namely Daimler Truck Mercedes-Benz. ANS relies heavily on the Mercedes-Benz OH 1626 chassis, with a 6-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 6,374cc which is capable of producing engine power of around 260hp and large torque for long-distance travel. This combination makes the ANS fleet known for its toughness in the tough terrain across Sumatra, while remaining comfortable thanks to the support of modern suspension and body configuration. [8][9]
ANS also relies on only one bus bodywork company as its regular customer, namely Morodadi Prima. Morodadi Prima's body is known for its sturdy construction, and is thick with European-style designs, especially the Patriot series with an elegant and futuristic appearance. ANS uses many Patriot variants such as the TE228G (Travego Evolution) which carries the concept of single-glass (single windshield). This design provides wider visibility for the bus driver and front passengers, while giving a modern impression like a European bus. In addition, Morodadi Prima also presents updates to the interior such as a new dashboard, toilet with a circulation system, to a smoking area at the rear. The interior is generally filled with premium 2+2 configuration seats with leg rests, and some units are even equipped with ANS's signature cabin partition that separates the crew and passenger areas. [10][11]
ANS's subsidiary in the tourism bus sector, Nyaman Holiday, is not limited to a single vehicle manufacturer or bus body builder. The Nyaman Holiday fleet utilizes many Adi Putro bus bodies, including the Jetbus 5 model, and Laksana's Legacy SR-3 model for both medium and large buses. These bodies are known for their flexibility and modernity, allowing them to be combined with various chassis. The Jetbus 5 and Legacy SR-3 designs also offer an aerodynamic appearance with a spacious cabin and complete entertainment features. For its chassis, the Nyaman Holiday relies on Hino Motors and Isuzu Motors chassis. Meanwhile, Nyaman Holiday relies heavily on the Isuzu NQR or Hino RM chassis, which is claimed to be efficient, easy to maintain, and suitable for tourism needs.[12][13]
Routes
Intercity Buses
ANS makes intercity and interprovincial buses (AKAP) its sole business line (other businesses are handled by its subsidiary, see below). Long-distance bus passenger transportation, especially the route from Java to Sumatra and vice versa, experienced a heyday before the introduction of low-cost carrier services by various airlines. With a fleet of more than 45 units per day as of 2023, for years, ANS together with PMTOH (Aceh), ALS (North Sumatra), Sinar Dempo (South Sumatra), Gumarang Jaya (Lampung), and NPM (West Sumatra) have dominated the trans-Sumatra Highway, both the central and eastern routes.[3][14]
Entering the early 2000s, ANS, along with dozens of other bus companies that had routes across Sumatra and Java, experienced a gloomy period, because many passengers switched to air transportation, whose fares were only slightly more expensive than land passenger transportation (buses). [15] Currently, ANS only serves routes to the west, from DKI Jakarta to various destination cities in West Sumatra. In addition to the west, ANS also opens routes from DKI Jakarta to the east, such as to Bandung, West Java.[16][17]
Non-route business
Tour buses
PT Wellian Nusantara Transport (doing business under the name Nyaman Holiday) is a subsidiary of ANS that operates a tour bus business. Unlike ANS, Nyaman Holiday's tour buses rely heavily on a new and modern fleet and are not limited to a single chassis or body design. In terms of facilities, the Nyaman Holiday bus cabin is designed quite complete for tourism needs, starting from the ergonomic 2-2 seat configuration, entertainment television, to drinking water dispensers, and even toilet, creating a more relaxed and comfortable travel experience for passengers. [18] Although operating as a tourist bus, Nyaman Holiday also serves as a mudik assistance bus for the parent his own business.[19]
