Muji Jaya is a Indonesian bus company group headquartered in Jepara Regency, Central Java. This business group operates intercity bus, tour bus, and shuttle bus, all under the brand Muji Jaya. Founded by Amin Murdianto in 1991, this business group has grown into a transportation business group with various brands managed by companies that are each independent, although still managed by the Amin Murdianto family. The head office and main garage of this bus company are located in Ngabul, Tahunan, Jepara, but the locations of each of its spin-off companies vary.
Beginnings
Muji Jaya was initially established as a single entity on August 5, 1991. Amin Murdianto, the founder of this bus company, began pioneering a land transportation business that is now known as one of the legendary intercity and interprovincial buses in Jepara Regency, Central Java. Initially, the bus company used the old spelling "Mudji Djaja," and its initial operational focus was on the Jepara Regency–Kramat Jati (Jakarta Special Capital Region) route. The background to the founding of Muji Jaya was very simple—it started as a trucking company focused on trading agricultural products from Jepara to Jakarta, considering the need for reliable transportation to be a crucial requirement for the small and medium-sized business community in Jepara. The idea to have your own bus came from an employee who saw an opportunity, and was finally approved by the founder as a formal business. With that spirit, Murdianto laid the foundation of a company that from the beginning had a distinctive character as a locally owned transportation company.[1][2]
In the early stages of development, Murdianto didn't just set up an ordinary bus company—he took the bold step of bringing a sackful of cash to purchase six Mercedes-Benz buses outright, a decision that demonstrated his strong vision for the future of intercity transportation in his area. An interesting incident during the purchase was when he was mistaken for a beggar by the dealer because of his very modest appearance, despite carrying a large sum of cash for the bus fleet. This incident illustrates how the founder's struggle started from zero, without the support of large capital, but with strong business conviction.[1]
As time goes by, PO Muji Jaya continues to grow and opens several new routes besides Jepara–Jakarta, such as Jakarta–Ponorogo, Jakarta–Cepu, and Jepara–Merak. Although some of these routes were eventually closed due to high operational costs, this effort shows how Muji Jaya is trying to expand following the dynamic market demand in the AKAP transportation sector. To date, the company maintains several important routes, such as Jepara–Jakarta, Jepara–Kudus Regency, Jepara–Semarang City, and Semarang–Denpasar City via Jepara, with plans to open new routes such as Semarang–Denpasar via the south and Jepara–Bandung City to accommodate the growing mobility needs of the community. [2]
For more than three decades, PO Muji Jaya has managed to survive amidst increasingly fierce competition from strong investors in the Land transportation industry, maintaining its identity as a legendary transportation company from Jepara Regency, beloved by its loyal customers. The routes it operates and the distinctive colors of its fleet are symbols of public trust in its professional and reliable service. The success of PO Muji Jaya in maintaining its existence shows how a family business with the right management can be resilient in facing the challenges of a constantly changing industry, especially in the field of land transportation.[3][1][2]
Company Division
Over its development, Muji Jaya split into several companies, including PT Muji Jaya Jepara (managed by Annisa Nor Faizah),[4] PT Muji Jaya Citra Mandiri (established in 2008,[5] managed by Mohammad Yunus Anies[6] and Mohammad Arief Tamam[7]), PT Muji Jaya Gemilang (managed by Alifi Nanda Nandiasa),[8] PT Muji Jaya Pitoe (managed by Yusuf Ashari[9] and Muhammad Abizar Adanni[10]), and PT Mujijaya Putra Mandiri (managed by Fahresa Nizar Akbar).[11] Fahresa Nizar Akbar, usually called Reza, is the grandson of Amin Murdianto, trusted to manage Mujijaya Putra Mandiri (MJPM). Reza took over after previously being guided by his father, Yusuf Ashari, son of Amin Murdianto who manages Muji Jaya Pitoe. Since childhood, Reza has shown an interest in the automotive world and has an ambition to be involved in a bus company so that after graduating from high school he chose to directly help with MJPM operations, even though he had considered the formal education path. This leadership transition demonstrates the strong spirit of continuity of the family business from generation to generation.[3][1][2]
Beyond its business aspects, the name "Muji Jaya" also carries a philosophical meaning, reflecting the prayers and hopes of its founders. According to future generations, the name was chosen as a prayer for the company's continued success and its continued fighting spirit in the face of competition. This philosophy indirectly guides the company's work culture, with every team member and manager encouraged to never underestimate anyone—whether customers, competitors, or future challenges—because each element plays a vital role in the sustainability of the business that has been built from the start.[12]
Fleet
Since the early 2020s, Mujijaya Putra Mandiri (MJPM) and Muji Jaya Gemilang (MJG) is the bus company in the Muji Jaya group that is most active in adding new bus units from the bodywork company Adi Putro through its product Jetbus, which is used for interprovincial bus (AKAP) services through MJPM as well as tourism through MJG. The fleet they added generally uses the Jetbus bodywork of various generations which is famous in Indonesia for its comfort, as well as seat configurations that are made to provide a more comfortable long-distance travel experience.[13][14] The Muji Jaya Group is known for adding more modern and high-tech units. In 2024, the bus company released two new buses with a Hino chassis and a Jetbus5 MHD body, specifically designed for Executive Lounge class service on the Jepara–Jakarta round-trip route. This latest fleet uses a comfortable chassis and a luxurious cabin with wood-paneled interiors, 2-by-2 reclining seats with leg rests, a TV for the passenger area, and even a toilet in the rear—a sign that the Muji Jaya group places customer comfort as a top priority in its fleet. [15]
In addition to conventional executive buses, Muji Jaya is also strengthening its fleet with models The latest sleeper bus is becoming increasingly popular among long-distance passengers. The two newest buses owned by MJPM use the bodywork Jetbus5 Dream Coach from the Adi Putro company with a seat configuration like a capsule hotel cabin (1-1), equipped with modern facilities such as electric seat backrest adjustment, USB port, AVOD, reading lights, and toilet, as well as striking paint pattern colors such as dark pink and dark green. This fleet serves the Jepara–Jakarta route, showing that Muji Jaya continues to innovate by presenting a fleet that is not only suitable for long trips but also meets the need for privacy and extra comfort for passengers. [16]
MJPM Garage
In addition to purchasing from a number of bus body companies, Mujijaya Putra Mandiri also relies on buses refurbished by its own business unit, a bus body repair shop called MJPM Garage. Located on Jalan Hugeng Imam Santoso, Ngabul, Tahunan, Jepara, the workshop serves a variety of clients from various bus companies and even offers car repairs. Among Indonesian bus enthusiasts, its workmanship is considered to be highly accurate and detailed, claiming it resembles the original units manufactured by renowned Indonesian bus body companies. Until 2021, to serve clients undergoing bus body renovations, MJPM Garage still used the classic method of manual paper estimates, which sometimes impacted the opportunity costs clients had to pay. [17]
Routes
Intercity Buses
Since its inception as a sole proprietorship, Muji Jaya has made intercity buses its primary business line. Muji Jaya operates routes from Jepara–Jakarta, Jepara–Bandung City, and Jepara–Denpasar City. After the division of the company, the AKAP bus service of the Muji Jaya group is served by PT Muji Jaya Jepara,[4] PT Muji Jaya Citra Mandiri (MJCM),[18] and PT Mujijaya Putra Mandiri (MJPM). The most prominent of these three bus companies is Mujijaya Putra Mandiri (MJPM) under the care of Fahresa Nizar Akbar, whose fleet is always rejuvenated and has complete facilities with seats made by Hai Rimba Kencana, complete with leg rest, pillows and blankets, snacks, and meal service. Muji Jaya competes with many other POs, including Bejeu, Haryanto, New Shantika, Nusantara, Rimba Raya, and Sahaalah, which have quite a lot of units.[19][18] MJPM is also known as the "broom bus" because it has a night travel schedule with premium class.[20]
Non-route business
Shuttle buses
Muji Jaya operates a shuttle bus (shuttle/travel) operated under the management of PT Muji Jaya Pitoe. Muji Jaya Pitoe is managed by Yusuf Ashari, father of Fahresa Nizar Akbar, and serves the Jepara Regency–Semarang route. [9]
Tour buses
In addition to regular buses, the Muji Jaya group operates tour buses under the management of PT Muji Jaya Citra Mandiri (MJCM) and PT Muji Jaya Gemilang (MJG). As of 2017, MJCM manages 6 tourist buses out of a total of 14 buses.[18] While the MJG bus units have a similar appearance to MJPM, these buses are managed by Alifi Nanda Nandiasa.[8]
