PT Maya Gapura Intan (MGI) is a Indonesian bus company based in East Jakarta. This bus company was founded in 2001 by three children of Engkud Mahpud: Asep Eris, Ade Ruhyana, and Azies Rismaya Mahpud (MGI) and is a business unit of the Mayasari Group in the intercity and interprovincial sector besides Doa Ibu, Karunia Bakti, and Primajasa. Since 2019, this PO has also taken over the management of communications and public relations from another PO acquired by the Mayasari Group, namely PT Cahaya Bakti Utama (CBU) founded by Yosep Rohimas and based in Sumedang Regency. These two bus companies serve intercity buses, tourist buses, and shuttle buses, specializing in West Java (excluding Bodebek) and Jakarta routes, and operate four brands: MGI and CBU for intercity buses, City Miles for tourist buses, and TRAVL for shuttle buses.

Maya Gapura Intan (MGI) was officially launched in October 2001[1] as one of the bus companies within the Mayasari Group (originally through PT Maya Raya Transportama). The company was founded by three brothers: Asep Eris Mahpud, Ade Ruhyana Mahpud, and Azies Rismaya Mahpud, the sons of Engkud Mahpud, a key figure behind the development of PO Mayasari Bakti, a city bus operator in Jabodetabek. Since its inception, MGI has automatically become part of the large land transportation network of the Mayasari Group, which is already widely known, especially in Jabodetabek. MGI's presence strengthens the group's bus passenger transport business line by focusing on intercity bus services.[2]

In its initial operational phase, PO MGI focused its business activities on passenger transportation services with intercity, interprovincial (AKAP) and intraprovincial (AKDP) buses. The routes served primarily cover the Jakarta and West Java areas, which are areas with high levels of public mobility. This strategy has quickly made MGI a household name on the main routes connecting economic and educational centers in these areas. With a continuously expanding fleet, MGI strives to provide reliable land transportation services for both daily and intercity travel. [1]

Over time, MGI has served a variety of short- to medium-distance routes. One route that has become a favorite and highly sought after by the public is the Bandung–Sukabumi route. This route exhibits a relatively higher passenger occupancy rate than other routes operated by MGI. Field data shows that passengers on the Bandung–Sukabumi route are more familiar with and prefer MGI buses over those of other operators, including other bus companies within the Mayasari Group. The popularity of this route has become a driving factor in MGI's service expansion into various supporting sectors. [3]

To expand its market share and meet the increasingly diverse needs of the community, PO MGI then expanded into the tourist bus and charter services sector using the City Miles brand. This development was carried out as part of a business diversification strategy so that the company does not solely rely on regular intercity and intercity routes. Through City Miles, MGI targets the tourist travel segment, group trips, and special transportation needs by emphasizing safety, comfort, and professional service. This step marks MGI's transformation from a mere regular route operator to a more comprehensive transportation service provider. [1]

However, PO MGI's journey has not been without challenges. In the 2010s, several incidents and accidents involving MGI fleets occurred in several locations. Among them are the accident on May 6, 2017 when an MGI bus crashed into a cliff on Jalan Raya Palabuhanratu, Bantargadung, Sukabumi;[4] the accident on February 17, 2018 in Rajamandala Kulon, Cipatat, West Bandung, which involved a Toyota Yaris car and a motorbike, killing one person;[5] and the incident on June 21, 2019 in Warungkiara, Sukabumi, when the MGI bus collided with a Mitsubishi Fuso L300 truck without causing any casualties.[6] In addition, on November 24, 2019, an MGI bus overturned in a ravine Cijeungjing, Ciamis, with all passengers safe.[7]

In response to the accident that occurred on May 6, 2017, MGI management claimed that the fleet was in roadworthy condition and had undergone routine maintenance and inspection procedures before departure.[4][8] On December 21, 2019, this PO was the target of a ramp-check from the Sukabumi Regency Transportation Agency and the Sukabumi Police Traffic Unit. One of MGI's buses had not been fitted with a handbrake and its high beams were out, requiring the crew on duty to immediately repair the bus so it could move. [9]

In 2019, MGI was also involved in socio-political dynamics when, along with several other POs in West Java, it refused to transport a group of participants in the 2019 Jakarta Protests and Riots|protests in Jakarta in May 2019]] for security reasons. Barna Sobarna, a representative from Karunia Bakti, which is still in the same group as PO MGI, asked the public to remain calm and be willing to accept the results of the 2019 Indonesian general election. At the time of the action, it was noted that no bus units had been rented from POs operating in West Java, and the bus operators would ask who would rent them and for what purpose.[10]

In the same year, MGI took a strategic step by uniting its communication and public relations functions with PO Cahaya Bakti Utama (CBU), another bus company in the Mayasari Group business group. CBU itself was previously founded by Yosep Rohimas[11] under the name Cahaya Bakti before finally being acquired by the Mayasari Group. Through this restructuring, the management of CBU and MGI is unified, including the use of the same social media and website accounts, as well as a clear division of routes to avoid overlapping.[12] During the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, MGI suffered a loss of IDR 750 million due to the lack of passengers. This is because public mobility was restricted to prevent the increasingly massive transmission of COVID-19 in Indonesia at that time, including prohibiting people from Mudik Lebaran.[13] Throughout its history, this PO won an award on November 27, 2017, namely the Wahana Adhigana award in the Four-Star Non-Economy AKAP category, which was an acknowledgment of the quality of service that the company had built over the years.[14]

Fleet

As of 2023, MGI operates a fleet of approximately 123 buses serving various official routes to several regions. This fleet serves as the operational backbone of both companies, providing both intercity bus and tourism services. To maintain service reliability and quality, MGI routinely allocates a substantial fleet maintenance budget, particularly for vehicle engine maintenance, amounting to approximately IDR 100 million per month.[1]

In terms of fleet specifications, MGI and its CBU fleet both rely on Hino chassis. Along with other bus companies within the Mayasari Group, both use buses with Rahayu Santosa bodies, such as the Ecoline and Jetliner models, and bodies manufactured by their in-house bodywork company, Mayasari Utama. Additionally, there is a fleet with Laksana bodies (Legacy SR-2). CBU and MGI, along with several other POs in the Mayasari Group, are among the few bus companies in Indonesia that throughout their operational history have never used buses with Adi Putro bodies, along with Anas Nasional Sejahtera (ANS), Arimbi/Bima Suci, Borlindo, Sumber Alam, and Tentrem.[15]

Distinctive

Although under the same management of the Mayasari Group, the two POs have different legal names. Therefore, they each have their own Visual Identity . MGI is characterized by its dark blue buses with white grilles. Meanwhile, CBU is characterized by its white buses with green checkered stripes.[13]

Routes

Intercity Buses

MGI and CBU have made intercity bus routes their primary business line. As of 2024, MGI will operate routes departing from Bandung City to Jakarta. It is recorded that a number of POs in West Java are competing, including with their own sibling Primajasa, also with POs operating in West Java including Arimbi and Bima Suci, Budiman, POs in the Hiba Group, and Merdeka.[16] Meanwhile, CBU has a route SumberSumedangCikarang.[17]

MGI and CBU are known for implementing a policy of not picking up passengers mid-trip[2] and prohibiting buskers and street vendors from boarding the bus. This policy is considered to improve comfort and safety during travel. This is further supported by a statement from an operational employee, Ade Suherman, who stated that the logo colors and paint scheme of MGI buses are designed to create a calming atmosphere for passenger comfort. [18]

Non-route business

Tour buses

In addition to serving intercity and regional transportation (AKAP) services, MGI has also expanded into the tour bus and charter sectors by introducing services under the "City Miles" brand. This development aims to meet the public's need for tourist transportation, from family activities and company gatherings to field trips. [1]

Shuttle Bus

On December 22, 2025, MGI launched a shuttle bus under the TRAVL brand, serving the debut route BandungJakarta. The bus uses a fleet of Toyota HiAce Premio passenger cars configured with only eight seats to provide more legroom and personal comfort. This differentiates the bus from the competition, targeting young professionals, students, and workers who require comfortable and efficient travel. The bus is equipped with a fast-charging USB-C port and provides a Travel Concierge at each stop to provide hotel-like travel information. This shuttle bus offers competitive ticket fares of around Rp175,000–Rp190,000 per trip with guaranteed compensation in case of delays or cancellations, and MGI plans to expand routes and develop a self-service booking application for ticket reservations in the future.[19]
