PT Dewi Sri is a Indonesian bus company headquartered and with its main garage in Pesurungan Lor, Margadana, Tegal, Central Java. This bus company serves intercity bus on the pantura coast of western Central Java, residential buses in Jabodetabek, as well as tourist bus serving various cities in Java and Bali. Dewi Sri is known for being the only bus company native to Tegal that controls the Pantura route in Central Java (along with Dedy Jaya from Brebes). Founded by the Ismail family, the family members are not only in the bus business, but also gave birth to a second generation who have all entered the world of politics and government in the Pekalongan Residency area.

Ismail, a man from Randusanga Kulon, Brebes, moved to Tegal City after marrying Rokhayah. From the late 1960s to the 1980s, the couple initially earned a living by farming, managing an ice lolly factory, and even selling rice to meet their family's needs. To support the smooth distribution of rice, they later purchased a truck. This truck ownership would later become the seed for their transportation business.[1][2][3]

Over time, Ismail and Rokhayah shifted their business focus from rice trading to passenger land transportation. They founded a bus company called Dewi Sri, based in Tegal City. Dewi Sri began operations in 1992. Early on, they aspired to operate intercity and interprovincial routes. However, due to the company's startup status, they began this venture by acquiring routes owned by PO Panca Jaya from Purwokerto. Dewi Sri's debut route was the intercity bus route within the province of Tegal City and Purwokerto. To serve this route, the company operated several medium-sized buses. This step laid a crucial foundation for their growth in the transportation sector. This is how Dewi Sri became known to the public. [1][3]

The name Dewi Sri is taken from the Goddess of Rice in Javanese mythology. This figure is generally associated with Dewi Laksmi, the goddess of fertility in Hindu mythology. Rokhayah stated that this name was related to her previous ventures related to agriculture and rice.[3]

In 1995, Dewi Sri began to expand its wings to inter-city inter-provincial services. The first route opened was TegalJakarta by operating a fleet of seven large buses. The large buses were obtained from the sale of all their medium buses while playing on the AKDP route.[3] Competition on the Pantura route of Central Java at that time was very tight. Dewi Sri had to compete directly with her neighbors, Dedy Jaya and Sinar Jaya from Bekasi.[1]

Facing the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the rupiah exchange rate weakened further, forcing the Ismail family to sell their assets. [3] Entering the early 2000s, Ismail handed over the leadership of the company to his wife, Rokhayah, and his son Ikmal Jaya. As the company developed, Ismail's three children pursued careers in politics. They are known for building political influence in the Brebes, Tegal, and Pemalang regions. This also influenced the leadership dynamics within the company. When Jaya was inaugurated as Mayor of Tegal for the 2009–2014 period,[4] the leadership of PO Dewi Sri was taken over by her sister, Idza Priyanti. Furthermore, on December 4, 2012, Priyanti was also inaugurated into public office, as Regent of Brebes.[5]

Under the leadership of Ismail's three children, Dewi Sri began expanding new routes, including Purwodadi–Jakarta, KendalPekalonganPemalang–Jakarta, Slawi–Jakarta, Purbalingga–Jakarta, and many other routes. Despite being overshadowed by the pros and cons of the political dynasty built by the second generation of the Ismail family, this PO has a legacy and a very valuable contribution to the development of mobility for the people of Tegal City and Regency. With its fierce competition, Dewi Sri still survives in serving various Pantura routes.[6]

Currently, Dewi Sri operates 800 buses in three divisions: intercity bus, residential buses Jabodetabek, and tourist bus.[1][2] Dewi Sri has many legacy buses for its intercity routes, using chassis from Mitsubishi Colt Diesel, Hino, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo.[7] Meanwhile, the bus bodywork used comes from Tri Sakti, Laksana, Adi Putro, and Rahayu Santosa. [6] Dewi Sri is known to use one of Volvo's premium chassis, the B7R, with 20 units produced, and its price is known to be very expensive. [1]

Dewi Sri's modern buses use a Legacy SR-3 Panorama body made by Laksana and a Mercedes-Benz OH 1626 chassis. This bus was released in 2024 and is used for tourism buses. The bus uses a different paint scheme than its regular buses (grey or black), this time the bus is maroon with yellow stripes.[8]

Routes

Intercity Buses

Since its inception, Dewi Sri has made intercity bus its main business arm. As the ruler of the Pantura (North Coast) route of Central Java, Dewi Sri buses serve routes from and to regencies and cities in the Pekalongan Residency area to Jakarta. Dewi Sri's first route, Tegal City–Purwokerto Purwokerto, has been integrated with the Tegal–Jakarta route segment, forming one long route, Purwokerto–Tegal–Jakarta.

Two travel classes are offered: economy class and air-conditioned class. Competing in a duopoly with Dedy Jaya on nearly identical routes, Dewi Sri is currently facing issues related to the quality of its fleet. Several TikTok users have criticized the condition of Dewi Sri buses post-COVID-19, experiencing numerous problems and showing no signs of rejuvenation. Many air conditioners cannot be operated, ticket prices are unclear, and many passengers are dropped off in inappropriate places. [9]

Non-route business

Jabodetabek residential buses

Dewi Sri began her involvement in the Jabodetabek residential bus industry when Ikmal Jaya handed over her leadership. At that time, Dewi Sri, through her subsidiary, PT Wifend Darma Persada, managed residential buses located in the planned city complexes of BSD City, Kemang Pratama, Lippo Karawaci, Bintaro Jaya, and Bukit Sentul Convention Center. These buses, owned by Wifend Darma Persada, became the forerunners of Transjakarta feeder buses, Transjabodetabek urban buses, and JR Connexion urban buses. Currently, Wifend Darma Persada is still playing on the JR Connexion route.[10][11][12]

Tour Bus

Dewi Sri also provides tour bus rentals for tourist trips in Java and Bali. Her tour bus units use relatively new buses. [8]
