PT Anugerah Mas is an Indonesian bus company headquartered in Jakarta. The company operates two brands: Agra Mas in the on-route bus segment (intercity buses, city buses, and airport buses); and Agra Icon in the non-route business segment (tourist buses and charters). The company's garage and head office are located in Cipayung, East Jakarta, and it has branch offices in Klari, Karawang, and Bogor, West Java, Yogyakarta, Pekalongan, Pati, and Wonogiri, Central Java.
Agra Mas has a close historical connection with Giri Indah, a bus company from Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, which has been operating since the 1970s. This connection is inseparable from David Ariawan, who currently serves as the head of Agra Mas' management and is the grandson of the owner of Giri Indah. During its heyday, Giri Indah was known as an intercity bus and city bus operator serving the Greater Jakarta area. However, the company's existence had to end in 1998 due to the impact of the Asian financial crisis which caused many transportation companies to go bankrupt..[1][2]
Following the closure of PO Giri Indah, Ariawan's parents, Laniwati and Hermadi, took the initiative to continue the transportation business by managing part of Giri Indah's old routes operating in the East Jakarta area. However, their business is not a direct continuation of the old management, but rather a completely independent re-establishment from scratch. This step was taken to build a healthier company foundation and adapt to the changing conditions of the transportation industry following the economic crisis.[1][2][3]

Three years after restarting the business, Laniwati and Hermadi officially gave the bus company the name Agra Mas' which they manage. This naming was done to avoid confusion with the previously known name Giri Indah, and also to create a new, completely separate identity. The name Agra Mas itself was taken from the company's legal entity name, namely PT Anugerah Mas. That same year, Ariawan had just completed his higher education and subsequently became actively involved, eventually taking over the leadership of Agra Mas.[1][2][3]
Under David Ariawan's leadership, Agra Mas began to grow gradually, initially focusing on bus transportation services in the Jabodetabek area. Over time and with increasing public trust, Agra Mas management began planning an expansion into the long-distance transportation sector. In 2010, Agra Mas officially entered the intercity and interprovincial bus (AKAP) service by opening its inaugural route, namely Wonogiri–Jakarta. The opening of this route holds special emotional significance for Ariawan, as Wonogiri is the area where he grew up and spent his childhood.[1][2][3]

David Ariawan explained that his background influenced the direction of the company's development. He grew up in Wonogiri, attended high school in Surakarta, and then migrated to Jakarta after graduation. These life experiences shaped his vision that although Agra Mas was founded and developed in Jakarta, the company's values, spirit, and cultural roots remain rooted in Wonogiri. This is what makes Agra Mas have a unique identity compared to other bus companies that have grown in the capital city area.[2]
In its debut in intercity and regional transportation (AKAP) services, Agra Mas was known as a company that prioritized passenger comfort. One policy implemented was to reduce bus seating capacity from the typical 40 to just 36. This policy aimed to provide more space for passengers, making long-distance travel more comfortable. This step demonstrated Agra Mas's commitment to improving service quality, even at the expense of potential revenue from passenger numbers.
Agra Mas's development continues with service diversification. In 2014, the company opened a integrated mode transportation service to Soekarno-Hatta Airport with the initial route of Cililitan Wholesale Center–Soekarno-Hatta Airport using an executive class fleet.[4] Furthermore, in 2017, Agra Mas again innovated by launching a super executive class Double-Decker bus service serving the Jakarta–Wonogiri and Parung–Jepara routes.[5]
Fleet

Agra Mas has a long and unique history in developing its fleet. In its early days, the company was known for operating used buses imported from Japan using Hino Motors, Isuzu Motors, and Daimler Truck chassis with simple, boxy bodies typical of urban buses. These fleets served inner-city and local routes before Agra Mas established its business direction towards inter-provincial intercity bus (AKAP) services. Despite their simple and functional appearance, these early generation buses prioritized passenger comfort, one of which was the policy of prohibiting street vendors from boarding the bus, a step that was quite progressive at the time and distinguished Agra Mas from other operators. [6]
As demand for long-distance services grows, Agra Mas continues to update its fleet by adopting various modern chassis from Japanese and European manufacturers. For intercity and long-distance transportation needs, the company uses Daimler Truck (OH 1626, OC 500 RF 2542), Volvo B11R, Scania AB K410iB, and Hino Motors RM 280 chassis, which is used in the Suites Combi variant. The diversity of chassis options demonstrates Agra Mas's commitment to delivering reliable engine performance, high efficiency, and stable driving comfort in various road conditions.[7][8][9][10]
In terms of bodywork, Agra Mas is known for its selective approach to modern bus design. One notable feature is the use of Laksana Legacy SR-3 Suite Class bodywork on its latest fleet of sleeper buses. This bodywork features a modern and premium design, with "full" LED lights, bold LED DRL lines, and a "floating roof" concept that reinforces the futuristic impression. The choice of bodywork focuses not only on aesthetics, but also on aerodynamics and cabin comfort, making it suitable for the high-end night bus segment that prioritizes passenger travel experience.[7]

In addition to Laksana, Agra Mas has also long relied on Adi Putro Jetbus bodywork from various generations. One of its flagship fleets is the Jetbus5 double-decker bus assembled on the chassis Volvo B11R. This bus appears with a minimalist but elegant exterior design, without excessive stickers, combined with red rims that give a "sporty" impression. The dominance of red and black with bold graphics creates a more mature and luxurious look. The interior is also designed to be very comfortable, with a 2-1 leg rest configuration on the lower deck and 2-2 on the upper deck, a minibar, a smoking area, a water dispenser, a toilet, and a sleeper seat on the lower deck, providing comfort approaching that of an airplane cabin for long-distance travel. [9]
In addition, Agra Mas also launched the Suites Combi concept, a bus that combines standard and sleeper seats in one unit, using a Hino Motors RM 280 chassis and a Laksana Legacy Legacy SR-3 Suites Combi body. These buses feature double glazing and a more modern paint scheme than older units, demonstrating Agra Mas's flexibility in providing services tailored to market needs—from comfortable daytime travel to a special overnight bus experience. In addition, Agra Mas also relies on buses produced by Karoseri Tentrem; with Avante H8 Grand Captain bodywork and has two sleeper seats above the driver, and has a crew rest area ("tiger cage") behind the driver's seat.[10][11]
Characteristic
Agra Mas's characteristic is a strong identity that makes it easily recognizable on the road. Its buses are predominantly red with relatively minimal stickers, and the company's white and orange folded paper airplane (origami) logo is the company's symbol. The combination of red with cream or black graphics reinforces Agra Mas's nickname as the "red ant." Meanwhile, for the tourist bus units operating under the brand Agra Icon, the difference lies in simpler graphics consisting of white, yellow, and orange stripes, although still maintaining an elegant feel and visual identity consistent with its parent brand.[7][12]
Routes
Intercity Bus
Agra Mas's intercity bus service has undergone a significant transformation since 2010, when the company shifted its core business focus from urban bus to intercity bus.[2] This strategic change has made Agra Mas widely known as one of the intercity bus operators serving long and strategic routes, especially on the islands of Java and Sumatra. Agra Mas is headquartered in DKI Jakarta and connects important areas such as South Sumatra, Central Java, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and East Java. Agra Mas serves almost every region in Java, making it a vital land transportation option for inter-island and inter-provincial passengers for a variety of travel destinations.[13]
In terms of comfort, Agra Mas offers relatively uniform standards of facilities across all classes of its intercity buses. Each fleet is equipped with air conditioning (AC), television, audio system, pillows, blankets, USB port, water dispenser drinks, as well as meal and snack services during the trip. The completeness of these facilities demonstrates Agra Mas's commitment to providing a comfortable and practical long-distance travel experience, regardless of the class chosen by passengers. With the support of a modern fleet and consistent maintenance, the Agra Mas intercity bus service is designed to meet the needs of passengers who prioritize comfort, safety, and travel time efficiency. [14]
Agra Mas also offers a variety of intercity service classes that can be tailored to passenger preferences and budget. The highest class is the Sleeper, which relies on a double-decker bus with a combination of sleeper and reclining seat in a 1-1 configuration.[15] In addition, there is the Suites Combi as the newest fleet that combines the super executive and sleeper classes in one bus, with a 2-1 seating configuration and 2-1 sleeping berth.[10] For the sitting class, Agra Mas provides a Big Top with a 2-1 configuration,[16] executive class with 2-2 configuration complete with footrests,[17] and VIP class as a class with basic facilities.[18] This class variation strengthens Agra Mas's position as an intercity bus operator capable of reaching various passenger segments with varying levels of comfort.
Urban buses and modal integration

Although Agra Mas is better known to the public for its intercity bus services, its contribution to the urban bus Jabodetabek cannot be ignored. These urban bus services complement the public transport ecosystem in metropolitan areas, particularly in providing connections between areas not always served by rail-based mass transit. Government and private operators now offer a variety of options ranging from airport intermodal buses to connect various points in the city with Soekarno–Hatta Airport, to integrated bus services such as Trans Depok that connects Harjamukti LRT Station with Depok Bus Terminal, as well as integration with other public transport for access to popular destinations such as Ocean Park BSD or the Bogor–Jakarta route served by various operators.[19][20]
Agra Mas is listed as one of the city bus operators serving strategic routes in Jabodetabek. Based on the route list from the official document released by the Ministry of Transportation/BPTJ, the Jabodetabek city bus routes served include Soekarno–Hatta Airport–PGC Cililitan, Baranangsiang Bus Terminal–Lebak Bulus MRT Station, Baranangsiang Terminal–Tanjung Priok Terminal, Ciawi Market–Senen Bus Terminal, Cikarang Bus Terminal–Poris Plawad Bus Terminal, Ciawi Market–Grogol Bus Terminal, Baranangsiang Terminal–Kampung Rambutan Bus Terminal, and several other routes connecting residential areas with transportation economic activity centers. All of this shows that public transportation — including city buses — plays a role as the backbone of people's daily mobility in urban and suburban areas.[21][4][22]

Tourist and charter buses

Agra Mas is developing tourist and charter bus services through the brand Agra Icon to meet the growing need for tourist transportation Through Agra Icon, the company offers tourism travel services with a wide selection of fleets, ranging from small buses to large buses, with seating capacities ranging from approximately 16 to 59 seats. This service is designed to serve various travel needs, for both small and large groups, and operates in various strategic areas on the islands of Java and Sumatra, thus reaching many tourist destinations and non-regular travel activities.[12][23]
In its operations, Agra Icon relies heavily on a fleet of relatively young buses to ensure travel comfort and reliability. For example, in 2025, Agra Icon uses the Adi Putro Jetbus5 bodywork combined with a Hino chassis or other chassis according to the size and specification needs of the vehicle. In terms of appearance, Agra Icon buses carry a simpler body design compared to the AKAP fleet, with the distinctive yellow "Icon" lettering as a differentiating identity. This fleet is specifically designed for tourist trips, including a 3–2 seat arrangement that provides more spacious cabin space, but can accommodate more passengers, thus increasing passenger comfort during the trip.[23]
