PT Tunas Antarnusa Muda Kargo (TAM) is an Indonesian bus and cargo company based in Pekanbaru, Riau, and headquartered in Jakarta. Founded in 2011 as a cargo company, the company has evolved into a multi-segment transportation operator. The bus and cargo company operates intercity buses between Sumatra and Java, tourist buses serving Java and Sumatra, and cargo services serving Sumatra, Java, and the Nusa Tenggara Islands.

TAM is widely recognized for its boldness as a new player, aggressively introducing a modern, comfortable, and classy fleet, while revolutionizing the Sumatran bus transportation business in the 2020s. Known for its strong visual identity, dominated by brown on its bus body and the popular nickname "#KardusRalap" attached to its buses and cargo fleet, TAM Cargo's logistics roots blend with its modern bus image. TAM Cargo's headquarters and box truck garage are located in Bambu Apus, Cipayung, East Jakarta, and its main intercity and tourism bus garage is located in Cipayung, East Jakarta.

TAM Cargo

TAM began as a cargo business established in Jakarta, officially known as PT Tunas Antarnusa Muda Kargo (TAM Cargo). The company was founded in 2011 with the aim of becoming a professional and reliable courier/cargo delivery service provider via land transportation. Since its inception, TAM Cargo has focused on services covering pick-up, departure, and delivery to the final destination, with services oriented towards punctuality and security of goods. The system implemented emphasizes door-to-door service to various major regions in Indonesia, including Sumatra, Java, and the Nusa Tenggara Islands, with a fleet of box trucks tailored to keep goods safe from weather and other risks during the journey. The company's commitment to high-quality service is the foundation for TAM Cargo's growth in Indonesia's increasingly competitive land logistics industry. [1]

The key figure behind the history of TAM Cargo is Taufik Martha Akhzar, a man from Pekanbaru City, Riau who His roots began with his experience as an ordinary employee in the logistics sector. He began his career working for a local logistics company and from that first-hand learning experience he understood the ins and outs of the cargo industry in depth—from operational management, business tricks, to how to build good relationships with customers. Akhzar's career journey from an ordinary worker to the owner of TAM Cargo shows strong dynamics and learning in understanding market needs and the right service strategy. This story is often cited as inspirational because it shows how an ordinary worker can develop into a leader of a large company through experience and intensive learning in the field.[2]

Over time, TAM Cargo's presence has become widely known not only in Riau but also outside the province through its continuously expanding service network. Over the years, the company has strived to develop a more effective logistics system by establishing branch offices in many of its service areas to streamline the delivery process and maximize service coverage. This professional approach not only strengthens TAM Cargo's position in the competitive industry, but also increases customer satisfaction and trust among those who choose their services as their competitive interprovincial shipping partner. A commitment to improving the quality of human resources, adequate supporting facilities, and a reliable fleet are key benchmarks in maintaining superior service in the industry.[1][2]

Establishing a bus company

From its foundation as a cargo company, TAM Cargo then expanded into transportation business general passenger transportation, which became the forerunner to the birth of PO TAM (managed by its parent company and subsidiaries PT Trans Antarnusa Mulya and PT Trans Andalan Minang). This transformation occurred several years after TAM Cargo's founding, when management recognized growth opportunities in the booming passenger transportation sector, particularly in land transportation. The initial expansion was not directly into extensive intercity bus services, but focused on tourist buses serving consumer travel. In its initial phase, TAM only had two tourist buses, which then expanded to eight, including six large buses, around 2019, signaling a positive response to market demand for land-based tourism services. [1][2]

This transformation from logistics services to passenger transportation demonstrates the group's broad vision in exploring the transportation industry. Expansion into the tourist bus sector and then into the intercity and interprovincial (AKAP) bus sector is a strategic step to diversify the company's service portfolio. In 2022, TAM will prepare five new AKAP buses with Jetbus 3+ MHD bodies and Daimler Truck OH 1626 chassis to begin serving the Jakarta–Pekalongan City route on Java Island. This not only marks TAM's serious commitment to long-distance land passenger services, but also the company's efforts to become a competitive player in the inter-provincial passenger transportation segment, which has been dominated by other large bus companies.[1][2]

Entering the operational phase of inter-provincial and advanced bus services, TAM continues to expand its fleet by adding the latest, high-quality units, including the release of new buses based on the latest Mercedes-Benz chassis in 2024. This step demonstrates that the company is not merely "participating" in the passenger transportation market, but is also striving to appear competitive by providing a modern and comfortable fleet for passengers. Furthermore, TAM's presence on strategic routes strengthens the company's image as an alternative for the public, especially travelers or travelers who need long-distance land transportation services. Along with this development, TAM Group — which was initially known as a logistics service provider — is now increasingly known as a complete transportation provider in Indonesia with cargo services, tourist buses, and AKAP buses.[3]

Fleet

TAM is known for relying on chassis oriented towards performance, efficiency, and sustainability for its entire fleet, both in the land transportation intercity bus and tourism sectors. TAM consistently relies on Mercedes-Benz chassis, particularly the OH 1626 Euro 4 type, which is known for its high durability for long-distance travel. The Euro 4 emission standards also demonstrate the company's commitment to environmental regulations and fuel efficiency. [4] In addition to relying on a rear-engine chassis, PO TAM also has a fleet of front-engine chassis (OF 1623). This chassis is claimed to be cheaper than the rear engine and also has an air suspension that keeps the bus unit comfortable. [5] In addition to having a Mercedes-Benz chassis, it is noted that TAM also operates a Volvo B11R chassis[6] and Hino RK 280.[7]

In terms of bodywork, PO TAM collaborates with several leading national bodywork companies, including Adi Putro, Laksana, and Tentrem. Laksana is the preferred choice for intercity and regional (AKAP) fleets through the use of Laksana Legacy bodies, from the Legacy SR-2 Panorama to the Legacy SR-3 Front Engine. This body offers a modern design, sturdy structure, and a spacious cabin that supports passenger comfort on long journeys.[5][8] In addition, TAM also operates medium buses, using a Mercedes-Benz OF 917 chassis and a Tourista SR-3 body.[9] Meanwhile, Adi Putro bodywork is used primarily for the development of AKAP and tourism fleets through the Jetbus SD-V3++ (Super High-Deck - Voyager) and Jetbus5 bodies. The futuristic, ergonomic, and flexible design of Jetbus allows the interior configuration to be adjusted to the needs of both tourist and intercity bus users.[10][11]

The innovation of PO TAM's fleet is increasingly visible through its collaboration with the Karoseri Tentrem bodywork company, particularly in the development of sleeper bus and double-decker buses. From Tentrem, TAM released a fleet with a Hino RK 280 chassis and Avante H8 bodywork; as well as buses with a Volvo B11R chassis and Avante D2 bodywork for its double-decker buses. This concept offers a higher level of comfort than conventional buses, with reclining seats resembling beds and better privacy. The presence of this sleeper fleet positions TAM as a new operator with the potential to revolutionize non-economy class intercity and interprovincial buses on the SumatraJava route.[6][7]

Distinctive Appearance

In the early days of its operations, TAM still used a non-uniform paint scheme for each unit, and the text "TAM" was still written in the popular Indonesian tourist bus font, Compacta, as a sign that the company was still in its pioneering phase.[8] However, since 2023, this bus company has adopted a more professional visual identity, namely brown and black, with a colorful company logo. blue.[7] The TAM business group is also known for carrying the nickname #KardusRalap, the text of which is affixed to the bus body (even box trucks from TAM Cargo).[12]

Cargo Services

TAM's first line of business is a cargo company under the brand name TAM Cargo. TAM Cargo's services focus on punctuality, cargo security, and door-to-door service to various key regions in Indonesia. TAM Cargo serves Sumatra, Java, and the Nusa Tenggara Islands with a fleet of box trucks.[1]

Non-route business

After entering the bus transportation industry, TAM developed a tourism bus business as its first business line after becoming a bus company. TAM's tourism buses come in various types, ranging from medium-sized buses to large buses. The procurement of a dedicated tourism fleet with various bus bodies demonstrates the company's focus on meeting the travel needs of educational institutions, corporations, and general tourism. This first business diversification makes TAM not only engaged in goods transportation services, but also as a provider of integrated transportation services that are adaptive to market dynamics.[9][13]

Routes

Intercity Buses

After successfully operating tourist buses, TAM is progressively expanding by opening inter-provincial intercity bus routes (AKAP) across islands. This bus service is operated by three companies: the parent company, PT Tunas Antarnusa Muda Kargo; and its two subsidiaries, PT Trans Antarnusa Mulya, for operations in Java, and PT Trans Andalan Minang, for operations in West Sumatra. In early November 2022, TAM plans to open its first route in Java, namely JakartaPekalongan, using five buses. [14]

TAM is also optimizing the utilization of national infrastructure by opening intercity routes within provinces (AKDP). PekanbaruDumai via Trans-Sumatra Toll Road on October 13, 2023. Utilization of the toll road allows for efficiency in travel time and increases passenger safety and comfort aspects. By setting relatively affordable fares, this strategy demonstrates TAM's efforts to reach a wider market segment without sacrificing service quality.[15]

TAM also launched the BandungPekanbaru route on November 2, 2024, connecting economic centers in Java and Sumatra. The opening of this route reflects PO TAM's courage to enter a market with a high level of competition, while also demonstrating the fleet's readiness to serve long-distance travel sustainably.[16] Then, in October 2024, TAM plans to open the complete Dumai–Pekanbaru–Jakarta–Bandung route.[17]

In West Sumatra, PO TAM is seen as a newcomer with significant potential to become a major competitor to established operators. The opening of the Jakarta–Padang route on December 31, 2025, represents a significant differentiation strategy. This service targets passengers who prioritize comfort and travel efficiency, especially on routes with long travel durations.[18] This PO is recorded as competing with many Sumatran bus companies, both those with more than 30 years of experience and those who are young and of the same generation.[12]
