PT Sinarjaya Megahlanggeng is a Indonesian bus company originating from Bekasi Regency, West Java. This business group owns several bus brands and companies, namely Sinar Jaya and Daya Melati Indah (DMI) for intercity buses, shuttle buses, and urban buses; Starbus and Starlogs (PT Sinarjaya Langgengutama) for large tourist buses and cargo services; and Sinar Express (PT Sinar Heta Ekspres) for fast courier services. This bus company is among the largest and richest private bus companies in Indonesia after Mayasari Bakti, Hiba Group, Bagong, and Akas, operating a fleet of 1,000 vehicles running daily.[1]
Sinar Jaya is a bus company known for offering greater comfort at affordable prices. more affordable than its competitors.[2] It is known that the demand for bus travel by passengers is very high and increases every year. A study conducted by students at Bina Sarana Informatika University in 2023 showed that Sinar Jaya ticket prices influenced passenger satisfaction and loyalty by 75.5%.[3]
Beginnings
Sinar Jaya was born from Herman Rusly's extensive experience in the transportation industry, which he had been involved in since 1969. Together with his partner, Rasidin Karyana, Herman saw a significant opportunity in the road transportation business, particularly intercity buses. After various discussions and preparations, the two agreed to establish their own bus company. The founding date for the company was finally set on October 28, 1982. This date was not chosen by chance, but rather holds strong historical significance for the Indonesian nation. Karyana said that Herman deliberately chose that date because it coincided with the commemoration of Youth Pledge.[4]
In its early days, Sinar Jaya operated on a relatively small scale. Its first office was located at Jalan Diponegoro No. 75, Tambun Selatan, Bekasi. From this modest location, all of the company's operational activities were carried out. Although facilities were limited, the founders' enthusiasm was strong. They hoped that Sinar Jaya would grow and become widely known. Bekasi's strategic location provided the initial capital for developing a transportation network. [2]
The name "Sinar Jaya" itself has a personal story and is rich in meaning. When Herman and Karyana discussed establishing the company, one of the most important administrative requirements was choosing a name. Herman then gathered his family members to seek input. During the meeting, his mother proposed the name "Sinar Jaya." She believed that businesses using this name tended to experience progress and success. [4]
The proposal was ultimately accepted and became the company's official name. Her mother's hope that her son's business would continue to shine and succeed became a constant prayer throughout the company's journey. The name "Sinar Jaya" is not just an identity, but also a symbol of optimism and growth. Since then, the name has been used and maintained to this day. This decision proved sound, as Sinar Jaya has been able to survive and thrive for decades. The name is now synonymous with one of the largest bus companies in Indonesia.[4]
In its early operations, Sinar Jaya operated 14 medium-sized buses. The route served at that time was limited, namely Cikarang–Pulogadung. This route was chosen because it had high passenger demand. With a limited fleet and routes, the company began to build customer trust. Consistent service was key to attracting repeat passengers. This is how the foundation of Sinar Jaya's business began to be formed.[4]
Shortly after, Sinar Jaya began expanding its Intercity bus service. That same year, the company operated approximately 10 intercity/interprovincial buses. Over time, according to Karyana, Sinar Jaya operated six buses on the Jakarta–Cirebon route and another six on the Jakarta–Pekalongan route. The addition of these routes signaled the company's ambition to expand its service reach. Increasing passenger demand drove fleet expansion. This decision was a crucial step in Sinar Jaya's growth.[4]
When the fleet size grew to 14 units, Sinar Jaya further expanded its routes. The company opened services to Purwokerto, Wonosobo, and Cilacap. These routes are known for their high public mobility, especially on the Pantura route and its surroundings.[4] In the 1980s, capsule-style buses, often called "helicopter buses," were still very popular. Sinar Jaya also operated buses of this model. The presence of capsule buses adds a special attraction for passengers.[5] In 1989, the legal status of the company was ratified as a limited liability company with the name PT Sinarjaya Megahlanggeng, which at that time was located at Jalan D.I. Panjaitan No. 12, East Jakarta.[2]
Entering 1994, Sinar Jaya began strengthening its operational support infrastructure. The bus company established its first branch office along the Pantura (North Coast) route, specifically in Klampok, Wanasari, Brebes. This location was chosen because it was strategically located for buses traveling along the Pantura route. The branch office not only served as an operational center but also included a fuel station. This gas station was managed by a subsidiary, PT Sinarjaya Kilangmandiri. To this day, the Brebes branch remains an important transit point for Sinar Jaya's fleet.
A year after establishing PT Sinarjaya Kilangmandiri, Sinar Jaya further expanded its business line. The company established a new subsidiary focused on tourist buses and employee shuttle services. This subsidiary, named PT Sinarjaya Langgengutama, is known by the brand name Starbus. This move demonstrated a mature business diversification. Sinar Jaya no longer relies solely on intercity and regional (AKAP) services but also targets the tourism and special-purpose transportation segments. This strategy helped the company survive the dynamics of the transportation industry.[2]
In 1997, the leadership baton began to pass to the next generation. Teddy Kurniawan, Herman's son, officially took over the company after completing his education in Germany. He then served as President Director and has led the company to this day. Under his leadership, Sinar Jaya has continuously adapted to changing times. Teddy brought a fresh perspective to company management. The combination of long-standing experience and modern management has become Sinar Jaya's main strength.[4]
Driver Behavior

In the 1990s to early 2000s, competition among bus companies on the Pantura route was intense. Buses passing by often race against each other to catch up with passengers and schedules. Under these conditions, Sinar Jaya is known as one of the companies nicknamed "King of the Road." This nickname reflects its dominance and fierce competition on the roads. However, the numerous traffic incidents involving buses have prompted the company to conduct a major evaluation. Passenger safety is starting to become a primary concern.[4][6]
In response, Sinar Jaya is working to change the "king of the road" paradigm that has become associated with its image. The company launched the jargon "Safe, Affordable, Trusted" as a new commitment. Karyana and Herman actively go out into the field to monitor the behavior of drivers. Both emphasize that Sinar Jaya buses must not travel at excessive speeds. In addition, the company regularly holds driver education and training sessions. This training involves the Traffic Police and the Department of Transportation.[4][6]
These change efforts yielded significant results. Safety training was conducted consistently and continuously. Since then, Sinar Jaya drivers have been known to be calmer and less prone to racing on the road. They even remain relaxed when overtaken by other buses. This change in driving culture has increased public trust in Sinar Jaya. Passenger safety and comfort have become the company's primary values. The company's image has gradually shifted to a more positive one.[4][6]
Expansion

Sinar Jaya's achievements were increasingly visible from 2005 to 2010. During that period, this bus company won the Best Intercity Interprovincial Bus award from the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia every year. This achievement demonstrates consistency in service quality and safety. With the many awards won, Sinar Jaya recorded a record in the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI). This record was given as the bus company with the most awards. This recognition further solidifies Sinar Jaya's position in the national transportation industry.[5] On March 21, 2012, the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia awarded the Best Economy Classified Air Transport Service for Medium Companies to one of Sinar Jaya's brands, Daya Melati Indah (DMI).[7]
Entering the modern era, Sinar Jaya continues to expand and innovate its services. In 2022, through PT Sinarjaya Langgengutama, Sinar Jaya was entrusted to operate buses belonging to PT Vale Indonesia. These buses are used as transportation for mining employees in Sorowako, South Sulawesi. This trust demonstrates Sinar Jaya's reputation in managing large-scale employee transportation. Furthermore, in 2024, Sinar Jaya began to enter the world of urban buses. The company is trusted to manage BisKita Trans Bekasi Patriot and Trans Wibawa Mukti.[8][9]
Finally, on December 10, 2024, Sinar Jaya officially became the operator of Transjakarta, operating 20 electric buses. This step marked the company's involvement in environmentally friendly transportation. This innovation demonstrates Sinar Jaya's readiness to face the future of urban transportation.[10] On November 15, 2025, Sinar Jaya again received public recognition. The redBus website awarded the People's Choice Award in the category of Favorite National Large AKAP. This award is proof that Sinar Jaya is still loved by passengers until now.[11]
Fleet

The Sinar Jaya bus fleet is centrally managed through three main garage locations, each with a different function depending on the type of service operated. Cibitung Garage, located in Bekasi Regency, West Java is focused on the placement of intercity bus as well as shuttle buses fleets that serve various medium and long distance routes.[12] Meanwhile, Cakung garage in East Jakarta is used as a base for bus fleets operating in urban areas, including BRT Transjakarta buses, buses feeder and connecting Jabodetabek, as well as the shuttle fleet Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The South Tambun area in Bekasi Regency serves as the company's headquarters as well as the main garage that houses most of the fleet, including tourist bus used for rental and tourist trips.[13]
When it comes to chassis selection, Sinar Jaya is known for its strong reliance on products from European and Japanese manufacturers, proven for their durability and reliability. The Mercedes-Benz chassis is the backbone of the fleet, including the OH 1626 type which is widely used for intercity buses,[14] OC 500 RF 2542 which is used on double-decker buses and premium class buses,[15] and OF 1623 which is known to be efficient for certain services.[16] In addition to Mercedes-Benz, Sinar Jaya also relies on Hino chassis such as the RG, RN 285, RK8, and RK Turbo series which are used in various service segments, from intercity buses to city buses. This variety of chassis options allows the company to adjust vehicle specifications to operational needs and the characteristics of the routes served. [17]

For bodywork matters, Sinar Jaya collaborates with a number of well-known bodywork companies in Indonesia. The bodywork company Adi Putro is one of the main partners with products such as Jetbus of various generations (e.g. Jetbus3+ MHD[14] and Jetbus5 Dream Coach[18]) which dominate Sinar Jaya's modern intercity fleet. In addition, the Laksana bodywork is also widely used, especially through the Legacy[16] and e-Cityline 3[19] which are used on both city buses and electric buses. Some fleet units also use bodies from Rahayu Santosa, particularly on previous-generation buses.[17] For double-decker buses, Sinar Jaya relies on a combination of Mercedes-Benz OC 500 RF 2542 chassis,[15] while for the development of electric buses, the company is collaborating with Laksana to use a domestically manufactured chassis from VKTR through a licensing agreement with BYD as a form of support for environmentally friendly technology.[19]

Sinar Jaya's fleet innovation was evident in mid-2019 when the company led a pilot project to develop a premium class bus Legacy SR-2 Suite Class with the body company Laksana in Ungaran, Semarang. The prototype, dubbed the "walking hotel," was first introduced to the public at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in July 2019. This Suite Class bus offers a seating concept that can recline up to 180 degrees, resembling a sleeper bus, and is even equipped with a bunk bed configuration like a dormitory bed. Another special feature lies in the luxurious feel of the interior, such as the use of red leather seats and complete facilities in the form of pillows, blankets, meal service, air conditioning, USB ports, AVOD entertainment system, LED TV, folding table, reading lamp and night light, safety belt, surveillance camera (CCTV), to toilet in the cabin.[20][21]
As part of its fleet innovation, Sinar Jaya is also the first bus company in Indonesia to operate The "Suites Combi" model bus is a collaboration between Laksana and the Laksana Legacy SR-2 Suites Combi Family Series. This bus is designed to combine the comfort of conventional seats with the amenities of a "sleeper bus", using a 2+1 "sleeper" seat configuration that allows two passengers from one family to sit in one cabin, providing more privacy and comfort during long journeys. This fleet was developed based on inspiration from similar concepts from abroad and is designed to provide a more modern and enjoyable travel experience for passengers, with a capacity of around 29 seats and a body structure that has met international strength and safety test standards. [22]
Distinctive Appearance
In addition to its diverse and innovative fleet, Sinar Jaya also has a distinctive appearance that is easily recognizable on the road. Its buses are predominantly plain white, combined with a rainbow stripe paint pattern on the sides. This rainbow livery is not merely an aesthetic element, but also holds deep philosophical significance. Sinar Jaya's founder, Rasidin Karyana, interprets the rainbow as a symbol of the company's commitment to uniting all Indonesians with diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures. With a simple yet meaningful appearance, Sinar Jaya's visual identity has become a distinct icon in the world of intercity bus transportation in Indonesia.[4]
Routes
Intercity Buses

Sinar Jaya is known as a bus company with a core business line of intercity bus transportation (AKAP). Its route network is centered on the islands of Java, Sumatra, the Nusa Tenggara Islands, and Kalimantan. Almost all national roads and toll roads in Java are served by Sinar Jaya buses.[23] One of the shortest routes it has is Cikarang–Ciawi–Sukabumi.[24] This extensive route network makes Sinar Jaya a major player in land transportation in Indonesia.
On the island of Java, Sinar Jaya serves various important routes connecting major cities and regions. For certain routes, such as Jakarta–Wonosobo, the company does not use the Sinar Jaya brand. Instead, the buses on the route operate under the name Daya Melati Indah (DMI). Although using a different brand, the service and management remain within one company. This is done to adjust operational and route policies.[25]
In addition to routes within one island, Sinar Jaya also operates inter-island routes such as Java–Sumatra and Java–Lesser Sunda Islands.[26] In the Java–Sumatra segment, Sinar Jaya buses serve the Jambi City area,[27] City Palembang,[28][29] and Lampung. The longest route served is Bandar Lampung–Bandung–Yogyakarta. These routes connect economic centers and community mobility across islands. The existence of this service makes long-distance travel easier by land.[30]

In the Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara regions, Sinar Jaya plays a role in supporting regional connectivity. In March 2025, the Land Transportation Management Center (BPTD) Class II East Nusa Tenggara collaborated with Sinar Jaya to operate pioneer buses with the routes Kupang–Naimata, Kupang–Oemoro, Kupang–Tinis, Kupang–Oinlasi, Kupang–Fatumnasi, and Kupang–Manubelon.[31] In the Kalimantan region, this company operates buses with the Balikpapan–Sepaku Balikpapan–Sepaku route to support public mobility to Nusantara Capital City (IKN). With the opening of this route, Sinar Jaya contributes to the development of transportation in new areas. This service also demonstrates the expansion of Sinar Jaya's intercity bus network outside of Java and Sumatra. [32]
In operating its intercity bus routes, Sinar Jaya continues to emphasize affordable fares for the public. The company's founder emphasized that the bus service is not solely profit-oriented. During the Eid al-Fitr holiday season, Sinar Jaya strives to keep fares more affordable than other operators. However, pricing remains subject to government-mandated floor and ceiling tariff limits. This principle is a hallmark of Sinar Jaya's services on various intercity bus routes.[4]
Intermoda Bus
In addition to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, Sinar Jaya also operates intermodal bus routes at airports and other transportation hubs, such as the route from Kertajati International Airport to Leuwipanjang Bus Terminal in Bandung and the route from Port of Semayang–SAMS Airport–Indonesian Capital City (IKN). The presence of these routes demonstrates Sinar Jaya's role in supporting intermodal connectivity in various regions of Indonesia, while strengthening access to safe, efficient, and affordable public transportation.[33][34]

Jabodetabek Residential Buses
Sinar Jaya has been entrusted with operating the Jabodetabek Residence Connexion (JR Connexion)—a bus service between residential areas in the Greater Jakarta area and the city's activity centers, initiated by the Directorate General of Transportation and Multimodal Integration (BPTJ). In mid-2024, two main routes from the Harapan Indah residential area in Bekasi were reopened: Harapan Indah–Blok M MRT Station and Harapan Indah–Pasar Baru in Jakarta. The fleet for each of these routes consists of three buses with amenities such as air conditioning (AC), 43 forward-facing seats, USB charging ports, and an estimated travel time of approximately 1 hour and 6 minutes to Blok M and 49 minutes to Pasar Baru. The fare charged to passengers is around Rp. 25,000 with cash payment.[43][44]
As of April 21, 2025, 29 residential areas in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) have been integrated with JR Connexion and Transjabodetabek, developed by Damai Putra Group, Duta Putra Group, ISPI Group, Kalindo Land, Metland, and Sinar Mas Land. and operated by well-known bus companies such as AO Shuttle, Perum DAMRI, Higer, Lorena, Royal Wisata Nusantara, Sinar Jaya, Transjakarta, and Wifend Darma Persada. These JR Connexion routes aim to strengthen connectivity between residential areas in Bekasi with business centers and mass transportation modes in Jakarta, while encouraging people to switch from private vehicles to public transportation. The strategic partnership between BPTJ, local governments, area developers, and transportation operators above reflects a collaborative approach in providing convenient and standardized feeder services, with Sinar Jaya operating the Harapan Indah–Blok M route as the official transportation of JR Connexion.[45][46][47]
Tourist bus

PT Sinarjaya Langgengutama (doing business under the brand name Starbus) is a subsidiary of Sinar Jaya that focuses on tourist bus and employee transportation. The company was founded in 1995, a year after establishing PT Sinarjaya Kilangmandiri.[2] The hallmark of this bus is the rainbow-colored star pattern (representing the Sinar Jaya Group's paint scheme).[48]
In 2023, Starbus launched the Super Luxury class above the regular facilities, using Jetbus3+ MD bodies manufactured by Adi Putro. The bus features wood ornaments on the glass and interior panels, creating a very elegant look, along with ambient lighting and curtains on each window. The bus has only 15 seats in a 2+1 configuration manufactured by Hai Rimba Kencana. Each seat includes a legrest, USB port, reading light, and a folding table. A VIP room also includes amenities such as a small sofa that can accommodate two people, a smart TV, a water dispenser, a microwave oven, and a refrigerator.[48]
Since 2022, several employee buses owned by PT Vale Indonesia have also been managed and operated by Sinar Jaya. The bus is a double-decker bus with a Jetbus3+ SDD body.[49] Starbus is trusted to operate the mining buses, as indicated after the company signed an insurance agreement with Jasa Raharja since June 22, 2025.[50]
