PT Gunung Mulia Putera is a Indonesian bus company founded in Wonogiri Regency and now headquartered in Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java. Founded in 1986 by Goh Joe Soen (Gondo Wijoyo), it is one of the pioneering bus companies with Wonogiri routes (along with Giri Indah, Ismo, Sedya Mulya, Sumba Putra, Timbul Jaya, Tunggal Dara, and Tunggal Daya). This bus company serves intercity buses and tourist buses with three brands: Gunung Mulia, Gunung Mulia Putera, and GM Royal, with competitive and affordable fares. In addition to operating these two types of bus services, Gunung Mulia is involved in integrated highway bus services through the Trans Jateng operator consortium. The head office and main garage are located in Grogol, Sukoharjo, and it has a second garage in Ngadirojo, Wonogiri.
PO Gunung Mulia began with an opportunity accepted by Goh Joe Soen (Gondo Wijoyo), a truck entrepreneur of Chinese-Indonesian descent from Wonogiri in 1983 when he was offered the opportunity to purchase the Gunung Giri fleet and subsequently began to engage in the world of bus transportation. In 1986, Goh officially established his own bus company under the name Gunung Mulia, reflecting his regional origins (Gunung from Wonogiri) and spiritual values (Mulia for the glory of God). The name symbolizes the founder's hope and dedication to developing a strong and reliable bus service.[1][2]
At the start of its business, the transportation market in Wonogiri was very dynamic, and intercity mobility was very high (even with the transmigration of residents affected by the construction of the Gadjah Mungkur Reservoir), providing a significant opportunity for Gunung Mulia to grow. However, with the presence of large companies such as Tunggal Dara, Timbul Jaya, Ismo, and Wasis, competition was fierce, requiring Gunung Mulia to continuously improve its services. This situation has actually become a driving force for Gunung Mulia to innovate in its operations and services to compete in the intercity bus transportation sector.[1][2][3]
Over time, PO Gunung Mulia has begun to expand its route network by serving various strategic routes connecting major cities on the island of Java. Some of the main routes served include Jakarta–Salatiga City, Jakarta–Wonogiri Regency, Bogor City–Salatiga, Solo–Bogor, and others, making it a favorite among intercity passengers. This route expansion was accompanied by the addition of a more reliable bus fleet and increasingly comprehensive facilities for passenger comfort.[1][2]
Over its history, PO Gunung Mulia has transformed from a small operator into a major player in the land transportation sector in Java. Over the past 40 years of operation, Gunung Mulia has become increasingly recognized for its prioritization of safety, comfort, and competitive and affordable ticket fares. This bus company is now widely recognized not only in Wonogiri but also on various intercity routes across Java, becoming a vital part of the history of bus transportation in Indonesia. Currently, Goh entrusts the company's operations to his three adult sons. [2] As of 2023, the bus company employs 270 employees and operates 90 buses per day. [4]
Fleet

Gunung Mulia is relatively unscrupulous about its bus chassis and bodywork. Its fleet has evolved from two buses to a combination of modern engines and chassis such as the Hino RK8 and Mercedes-Benz OH, with bodies manufactured by renowned bodywork companies such as Adi Putro, Laksana, and Restu Ibu Pusaka (former Bigbird). This change demonstrates the company's consistency in improving the quality and safety of travel for its passengers. Gunung Mulia is known for diligently rejuvenating its fleet.[2][3]
Of all the bus bodies used, Gunung Mulia's modern buses are mostly produced by the Laksana company. In August 2024, Gunung Mulia introduced its newest bus fleet using the Laksana Legacy SR-3 HD Prime bodywork. The new bus chassis uses a Hino RK 280 Euro 4, with a cream-colored interior cabin configuration and wood panel accents for a cooler atmosphere for passengers. The seats are arranged in a 2–2 format, and are equipped with facilities such as a toilet and a TV, demonstrating PO Gunung Mulia's focus on long-distance travel comfort. The front of the bus features a double-glass design, providing a fresher and more dynamic appearance, accentuated by the Legacy SR-3's signature headband. [5]
Distinctive Appearance
The classic Gunung Mulia buses feature a white paint scheme with three orange, brown, and black stripes. Meanwhile, its modern buses use a cream base color combined with a yellow livery and light brown stripes, as well as the striking red "Gunung Mulia" inscription on the side of the body. [5]
Routes
Intercity Buses
Since its inception, Gunung Mulia has made intercity buses within the province (AKDP) and interprovincial buses (AKAP) across Java its main business line. These buses use two brands: "Gunung Mulia," "Gunung Mulia Putera," and "GM Royal," and serve intercity bus routes from Jakarta to various cities in Central Java, such as Semarang and Surakarta. These routes cover a long route connecting Jakarta with areas in the Greater Solo region and beyond. In addition to long routes, this PO also operates AKDP routes such as Surakarta–Purwantoro which are still used by students and local workers.[6] This PO also provides a sweeping bus service, because it has the nightliest travel schedule of all services on the route.[7]
In terms of fares, Gunung Mulia ticket prices vary depending on the route, service class, and company policies, which often change. Under normal daily conditions and on certain routes, more economical fares are also available; for example, the VIP AC class is around Rp270,000 and the Executive class is slightly higher, with customers choosing between morning and afternoon departures. However, these fares may increase, especially during the homecoming season for the Idul Fitri holiday.[8][9]
The Gunung Mulia fleet typically consists of buses with seating configurations tailored to their service class: VIP AC and Executive AC classes offer more spacious seats and amenities such as air conditioning, ample luggage space, and reclining seats for comfortable long-distance travel. Long routes such as DKI Jakarta–Surakarta City, Central Java, or Jakarta–Wonogiri can take hours on the Trans-Java Toll Road and national roads, so fleet quality is one of the things passengers often consider when choosing a PO. [10][6]
Besides facts about routes and fares, there are also personal stories from the Gunung Mulia PO crew, especially the drivers who work hard to transport passengers even though they often sacrifice time with their families. There is a driver who has to endure longing and sadness because he cannot gather with his family during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, due to the ban on going home and also work that takes up time away from home. He even expressed his emotional feelings because he could not meet his parents, wife, and children during the holiday season, showing that behind the transportation service there is a real story and the hardships of the life of a bus crew when facing difficult situations. This shows how working in the intercity bus industry, including at PO Gunung Mulia, is not just about driving, but also about dedication to family and personal life, many of whom sacrifice to keep transportation services running.[11]
Integrated-bus rapid transit
Gunung Mulia is also known to be involved in the formation of a consortium called PT Tunggal Dara Sejahtera. This company was formed together with other surviving POs, namely Al Amin, Ismo, Jaya Guna Hage, Tunas Merapi, and Tunggal Dara; and one PO from Sukoharjo, Raya. This company was entrusted by the Central Java Transportation Agency to operate the integrated highway bus Trans Jateng with the Solo–Wonogiri corridor. This is done so that local entrepreneurs are not marginalized but are directly involved in the operation and management of the fleet, crew, and investment of the service.[12][13]
