PT Majoe Muda Mandiri is a Indonesian bus company based in Madiun, East Java. This bus company serves intercity bus and tourist bus, with main routes between cities within the province of East Java, as well as intercity buses between provinces with routes in Sumatra, Java, and Bali. Known for its reputation as a "broom bus universe", especially through one of its brands, Sari Indah, this bus company was built on the basis of affordable fare services for the wider community,[1] even though it was colored by various operational dynamics. The company's headquarters and main garage are located in Kaibon, Geger, Madiun.[2]

PT Majoe Muda Mandiri began as a bus company called Cendana, founded on March 13, 1982, by a woman named Suprihatin. In its early operations, the company relied on medium buses to serve intercity bus routes within the province (AKDP) in East Java. The inaugural route was Ponorogo–Madiun[3] with economy class, designed to provide affordable transportation services for residents in the corridor.[4]
As transportation demand increased, Cendana began expanding its service network by introducing several specific brands to differentiate its routes. One such brand was Madjoe, which was opened to serve the Ponorogo–Surabaya route, departing from the Seloaji Terminal in Ponorogo. The Madjoe brand's operations are supported by the company's second garage located on Jalan Niken Gandini, Ponorogo. [5]
Through its two main brands—Cendana and Madjoe—the company reached peak popularity and became one of the favorite modes of transportation for people in the Ponorogo–Madiun–Surabaya corridor. At that time, the name "Cendana" was even better known to the public than the company's official name due to its strong presence and consistent service.[6] This success encouraged the company to expand further by opening intercity and interprovincial (AKAP) services. The first intercity and intercity bus route operated was Ponorogo–Jakarta, using the brand name Madjoe Muda.[7] Since that event, Cendana has begun operating new routes under different brands according to their market segments.
On March 14, 2013, this bus company officially changed its form to a limited liability company under the name PT Majoe Muda Mandiri. This step was taken to fulfill the legal requirements of the Ministry Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia that every bus company operating must have a legal entity of at least a limited liability company. [3] Entering 2019, Majoe Muda Mandiri was recorded as operating around 30% of the total 79 bus units it owned. [7] One of the brands under Majoe Muda Mandiri, namely Neo Harapan Utama, has achieved an achievement by winning the Wahana Adhigana AKAP Non-Economic award from the Ministry of Transportation on October 30, 2017. This award is proof that this bus company has nationally recognized service standards. [8]
However, Majoe Muda Mandiri's journey hasn't always been smooth sailing. Around 2021, the Cendana brand reportedly ceased operations for almost a year. This suspension sparked various internal issues, including protests and demands from employees who lost their jobs and questions about the clarity of management's stance. Suprihatin once stated that one of the reasons for the operational suspension was related to route permit processing. However, the uncertainty and perceived unfulfilled promises of management sparked demonstrations by bus crews. This incident demonstrates that despite its extensive experience, the company still faces challenges in business and human resource management amidst strict regulations and increasing competition in the transportation industry.[6][9]
Fleet

In operating its services, Majoe Muda Mandiri uses a variety of bus chassis types to support various service classes and route needs. Some chassis types recorded as having been used include Mitsubishi, Nissan Diesel, Hino, Mercedes-Benz, and Hyundai. This fleet diversity reflects the company's adaptation to operational demands across various terrains and routes, ranging from economy class, regular fare AC (ATB), to "Patas Jatim" class.[10]
In 2019, Majoe Muda Mandiri's buses were also diverse, ranging from small buses (28 units), medium (12 units), to large buses (39 units). The large buses have 55–60 seats, the medium buses 39 seats, and the small buses 34 seats. Some of these buses have passed their 25-year service life and are awaiting dismantling for components to be used as spare parts for younger buses.[11]
Majoe Muda Mandiri relies heavily on used buses from other bus companies, such as PO Haryanto. Ponorogo Indah, one of its brands, relies heavily on former buses owned by PO Haryanto. The buses use Hino RN 285 chassis and remodeled Jetbus3+ bodies.[12]
To serve various passenger segments, Majoe Muda Mandiri offers two service classes: economy and patas (including Patas Jatim). Economy class is frequently used on intercity routes in East Java, while long-distance Patas and non-economy services (as seen on the Ponorogo–Jakarta route) are designed for more comfortable intra-provincial and inter-provincial travel with tailored amenities, emphasizing the company's role as a multi-segment transportation provider. [13]
Distinctive characteristic
Majoe Muda Mandiri does not have a single paint scheme that defines its branding. However, the buses purchased by Majoe Muda Mandiri can be recognized by their polar bear paint pattern with a green plant background.[13] The paint pattern of this bus resembles Restu Panda.[14]
Routes
Intercity Buses

Majoe Muda Mandiri makes intercity buses (within the province and between provinces) its primary business line. Majoe Muda Mandiri has a very broad route network, spanning intercity routes in East Java to intercity routes connecting Java Island, the Nusa Tenggara Islands, and Sumatra. The unique feature of this company is its multi-branding strategy, all referred to as the "Madjoe Group" or "Cendana Group." The brands included in the "Madjoe Group" are:
- Bali Trans, intercity buses Denpasar–Surabaya.[15]
- Cendana, Madjoe, Neo Harapan Utama, and Ponorogo Indah, intercity buses Ponorogo–Surabaya City.[5][16][12]
- Madjoe Berlian, intercity bus Tulungagung—Banyuwangi.[17]
- Madjoe Muda, an intercity bus from Ponorogo City–DKI Jakarta.[7]
- Sari Indah, an intercity bus from Surabaya City–DKI Jakarta[1] and urban buses in Surabaya.
Non-route business
PT Fransindo Mega Sarana (Fransindo Trans), a subsidiary of PT Madjoe Muda Mandiri, operates tourist buses and charters. Its fleet is similar to that of Majoe Muda Mandiri.
